Jacob and I became friends. -

first met him -
4:19 - 4:21in Uganda in Central Africa,

have you stayed here? -

The night I first met Jacob, -
4:48 - 4:51he told me what he and other
children in northern Uganda -
4:51 - 4:53were living through.

with Jacob, -
6:18 - 6:21he told me something
I would never forget. -
6:46 - 6:48He told me more
about his brother -

told me to do something. -

is about or who Joseph Kony is, -

for the first time today. -

gonna do what he says -

want to do what he says, -
10:26 - 10:28but he forces them
to do bad things. -

10:36 - 10:38I couldn't explain to Gavin

10:38 - 10:41the details of what Joseph Kony
really does. -
10:41 - 10:44Because the truth is,

10:44 - 10:48Kony abducts kids
just like Gavin. -
10:54 - 10:58For 26 years, Kony
has been kidnapping children -
10:58 - 11:01into his rebel group, the LRA...

11:06 - 11:09...turning the girls
into sex slaves... -
11:12 - 11:16...and the boys
into child soldiers. -
11:16 - 11:19He makes them mutilate
people's faces. -
11:21 - 11:26And he forces them
to kill their own parents. -
11:28 - 11:31And this is not
just a few children. -
11:34 - 11:38It's been over 30,000 of them.

11:40 - 11:45And Jacob
was one of those children. -
11:49 - 11:52As if Kony's crimes
aren't bad enough, -
11:52 - 11:55he is not fighting
for any cause, -
11:55 - 11:58but only to maintain his power.

11:58 - 12:01He is not supported by anyone,

12:01 - 12:03and he has repeatedly
used peace talks -
12:03 - 12:07to rearm and murder
again and again. -
12:12 - 12:14This is the head prosecutor
-
12:14 - 12:17for the International
Criminal Court. -
12:17 - 12:20In 2002,
when the court was started, -
12:20 - 12:22their job was to find
and demand the arrest -
12:22 - 12:25of the world's worst criminals.

12:25 - 12:28Although there are
a lot of warlords, -
12:28 - 12:30murderers, and dictators
in the world, -
12:30 - 12:32the perversity of Kony's crimes
-
12:32 - 12:36made him first
on the court's list. -
13:00 - 13:03What do you think
we should do about him? -

We should stop him. -

We should stop who? -

that Kony should be stopped. -
13:18 - 13:23The problem is, 99% of the
planet doesn't know who he is. -
13:23 - 13:28If they knew, Kony would have
been stopped long ago. -
13:47 - 13:50When my friends and I
came home from Uganda, -
13:50 - 13:52we thought that
if the government knew, -
13:52 - 13:54they would do something
to stop him. -
13:54 - 13:56But everyone in Washington
we talked to -
13:56 - 13:59said there is no way
the United States -
13:59 - 14:01will ever get involved
-
14:01 - 14:04in a conflict
where our national security -
14:04 - 14:07or financial interests
aren't at stake. -
14:07 - 14:09PRENDERGAST:
No administration --
Republican, Democrat, -
14:09 - 14:11Obama, Bush, Clinton,
doesn't matter -- -
14:11 - 14:12would do enough
-
14:12 - 14:14because it's simply not
an important-enough issue -
14:14 - 14:18on the radar screen
of American foreign policy. -
14:18 - 14:21JASON: Since the government
said it was impossible, -
14:21 - 14:26we didn't know what else to do
but tell everyone we could -
14:26 - 14:29about Jacob
and the invisible children. -
14:29 - 14:31Show this movie
to as many people as possible -

that we can't be ignored. -
14:33 - 14:36And when we did,
people were shocked, -
14:36 - 14:39and their awareness
turned into action. -

a community. -

been living in this conflict -

what is gonna change this world, -

15:00 - 15:04JASON: And as the LRA began
to move into other countries, -
15:04 - 15:07Jacob and other Ugandans
came to the U.S. -
15:07 - 15:12to speak on behalf of all people
suffering because of Kony. -
15:12 - 15:14Even though Uganda
was relatively safe, -
15:14 - 15:16they felt compelled
to tell the world -
15:16 - 15:20that Kony was still out there
and had to be stopped. -
15:27 - 15:29We built a community
around the idea -
15:29 - 15:33that where you live shouldn't
determine whether you live. -
15:33 - 15:36We were committed to stop Kony
-
15:36 - 15:37and rebuild
what he had destroyed. -
15:37 - 15:40And because we couldn't wait
for institutions -
15:40 - 15:44or governments to step in,
we did it ourselves -
15:44 - 15:48with our time, talent,
and money. -
15:48 - 15:50So we rebuilt schools.

15:57 - 16:00We created jobs.
-
16:06 - 16:08And we built
an early warning radio network -
16:08 - 16:10on the front line of the war
-
16:10 - 16:14to protect villages
from rebel attacks. -
16:14 - 16:17MAN: To update real time
what's happening on a war zone -
16:17 - 16:198,000 miles away.

16:19 - 16:24JASON: All of this was funded
by an army of young people -
16:24 - 16:26who put their money
toward their belief -
16:26 - 16:29in the value of all human life.

of what little they had -

16:35 - 16:37and proved
that a bunch of littles -
16:37 - 16:39could make a big difference.

and senators one by one -

Republicans, Democrats -- -
17:56 - 17:57and they all agreed with us.

17:57 - 18:01Joseph Kony's crimes
had to be stopped. -
18:01 - 18:03INHOFE: With all the problems
that are out there, -
18:03 - 18:06none is more severe
than one that -- that mutilates -
18:06 - 18:08and takes the lives
of little kids. -

These young members of the
Invisible Children Organization -
18:11 - 18:14know that no child
should live in fear -
18:14 - 18:16of being abducted or killed.

So they were determined
to become their voice. -

African children and families -
18:22 - 18:25were invisible
to Washington policymakers. -

to make them visible. -

would never happen -
18:30 - 18:33suddenly became possible.

of the Congress's stated policy, -

to regional forces -

18:45 - 18:47"of Joseph Kony
from the battlefield. -

After eight years of work, -
19:22 - 19:24the government finally heard us.

19:24 - 19:28And in October of 2011,
a hundred American advisers -
19:28 - 19:32were sent into Central Africa
to assist the Ugandan army -
19:32 - 19:36in arresting Kony
and stopping the LRA. -
19:36 - 19:37It was the first time in history
-
19:37 - 19:40that the United States
took that kind of action -
19:40 - 19:43because the people demanded it.

19:43 - 19:47Not for self-defense,
but because it was right. -
20:16 - 20:20We've come so far.
-
20:20 - 20:23But Kony is still out there.
-
20:23 - 20:26He's recently changed
his tactics, -
20:26 - 20:30making it even more difficult
to capture him. -
20:30 - 20:34And international support
could be removed at any time. -

on some parts of human history. -
21:14 - 21:15Because when we heard
about injustice, -
21:15 - 21:20we cared,
but we didn't know what to do. -

with Joseph Kony -

to be arrested this year, -
21:43 - 21:46the Ugandan military
has to find him. -
21:46 - 21:48In order to find him,

the technology and training -

the American advisers come in. -
21:56 - 21:59But in order for the American
advisers to be there, -
21:59 - 22:02the U.S. government
has to deploy them. -
22:02 - 22:05They've done that, but if
the government doesn't believe -

about arresting Kony, -
22:08 - 22:10the mission will be canceled.

they have to know. -

if Kony's name is everywhere. -
