0:04 - 0:08This is the day that celebrates mother languages all around the world,
-
0:08 - 0:14and it commemorates the date on the 21st of February 1952, that is, 60 years ago,
-
0:14 - 0:19when a group of students protesting in Dacca, in what is now Bangladesh,
-
0:19 - 0:23in the fact that they were being forced to use Urdu, the national language of Pakistan,
-
0:23 - 0:29since it was then East Pakistan, and not able to use their mother tongue, which is Bengali or Bangla.

0:29 - 0:34The vast majority of communities around the world are bilingual or multilingual:
-
0:34 - 0:39that is, people are speaking two or more languages as part of their regular daily lives.

0:39 - 0:46In order to support multilingualism and bilingualism, it's very helpful to have mother tongue, mother language education,
-
0:46 - 0:54and for children and students to study two or more languages as part of their process of learning and studying at schools.

0:54 - 1:00In Australia, the government is currently carrying out a national review, looking at the role of languages,
-
1:00 - 1:07multilingualism, bilingualism, indigenous aboriginal languages and immigrant languages across the whole community,
-
1:07 - 1:12and they have called for submissions, and the parliamentary committee that's looking into this

1:12 - 1:22is currently interviewing a range of people, to try and understand the role of language and multilingualism and bilingualism within the Australian community.

1:22 - 1:30So here at SOAS, the Endangered Languages project is concerned with recording, documenting and helping to support endangered languages all around the world.

1:30 - 1:37We are training students, post-doctoral researchers and giving grants for researchers to travel to distant places,
-
1:37 - 1:40and to record and document languages that are under threat.

1:40 - 1:48We also have a major archive, with ten terabytes of material that is being collected and made available

1:48 - 1:51to communities and to researchers and to members of the interested public.

Bangladesh, Australia and the importance of Mother Language Education
In English: Peter Austin, Director of the Endangered Languages Academic Programme at SOAS talks about the Bangla-speaking students of the University of Dhaka who were protesting on 21 February 1952, against the then Government of Pakistan’s decision to promote Urdu as the sole national language. He also speaks about current review of bilingual education in Australia and the importance of Mother language education.
