Alan Watts - Money
-
0:00 - 0:05author, philosopher, and self-proclaimed spiritual entertainer
-
0:05 - 0:08Alan Watts
-
0:18 - 0:20In the West,
-
0:20 - 0:23we inherit the idea of law
-
0:23 - 0:27from those ancient conceptions of God
-
0:27 - 0:29and it is even passed down into science!
-
0:29 - 0:33Where we discuss Laws of Nature
-
0:34 - 0:36but one recognizes more and more in the sciences
-
0:36 - 0:39that what we call Laws of Nature
-
0:39 - 0:43are simply observed regularities
in the way things behave -
0:44 - 0:47And you,
in order to observe regularities -
0:47 - 0:51you must look at things
through something regular -
0:51 - 0:54that is to say
you must lay a ruler alongside them -
0:55 - 0:59or compare their behavior with the regular behavior of a clock
-
0:59 - 1:03But clocks and rulers
are human inventions! -
1:03 - 1:06They are regular measures
-
1:06 - 1:09which we use for comparing
-
1:09 - 1:11the rates of change,
-
1:11 - 1:14say a clock
is a measure of a rate of change -
1:14 - 1:17It's quite arbitrary!
-
1:18 - 1:22But we very easily compare our
-
1:22 - 1:26regulation measuring devices
-
1:26 - 1:28with what makes things happen.
-
1:28 - 1:33As if the sun rises
because it's 6 in the morning! -
1:33 - 1:37And that's being
completely backwards in one's thinking -
1:37 - 1:38And we get into the same confusion
-
1:39 - 1:42when we imagine for example
that money is wealth! -
1:43 - 1:46Here we have fantastic wealth
-
1:46 - 1:49and we have the technological possibility
-
1:49 - 1:52of making everybody on Earth
-
1:52 - 1:55the enjoyer of an independent income.
-
1:56 - 1:58We can't do it
-
1:58 - 2:00because people say where is the money gonna come from?
-
2:01 - 2:03Because they think money makes prosperity
-
2:03 - 2:04it's the other way around!
-
2:04 - 2:07It's physical prosperity
-
2:08 - 2:11which has money
as a way of measuring it -
2:11 - 2:13But people think
money has to come from somewhere -
2:13 - 2:16like hydroelectric power
or lumber or iron -
2:16 - 2:19and it doesn't!
Money is something we invent! -
2:19 - 2:21Like inches
-
2:21 - 2:23So you remember
The Great Depression? -
2:24 - 2:27When there was a slump
-
2:28 - 2:30and what did we have a slump of?
-
2:30 - 2:31Money
-
2:31 - 2:33There was no less wealth,
no less energy -
2:33 - 2:35no less raw materials
than there were before -
2:35 - 2:38but it's like you came to
work on building a house one day, -
2:38 - 2:40and they said "Sorry!
You can't build this house today," -
2:41 - 2:42"no inches."
-
2:43 - 2:46What you mean "no inches"?
-
2:46 - 2:48"Ah just inches! We don't mean... We got inches of lumber, yes"
-
2:49 - 2:52"we got inches of metal,
we even got tape measures!" -
2:52 - 2:54"But there is a slump in inches!"
-
2:54 - 2:57And people are that crazy!
-
2:57 - 2:58They can have a depression
-
2:59 - 3:00because they have no inches to go around
-
3:01 - 3:03or no dollars
-
3:03 - 3:05It's all a load of nonsense
-
3:05 - 3:07But you see,
because we got thinking backwards -
3:07 - 3:11And making the
metaphysical tail wag the dog -
3:12 - 3:14making the law rule things
-
3:14 - 3:19where it doesn't, it's merely a way of measuring what happens
-
3:19 - 3:21And so, you see,
when you get into Buddhistic thought -
3:21 - 3:24you don't get that confusion.
- Title:
- Alan Watts - Money
- Description:
-
The following is from another speech given by Alan Watts entitled "From Time & Eternity".
*"Do you remember the Great Depression? One day everything was going all right. Everybody was pretty wealthy and had plenty to eat. The next day everybody was in poverty. What had happened? Had the fields disappeared; had the dairy vanished into thin air; had the fish of the sea ceased to exist; had human beings lost their energy; their skills and their brains?
No, but on the morning after the Depression a man came to work building a house and the foreman said to him "Sorry chum you can't work today, there ain't no inches." He said "What do you mean there ain't no inches?" "Yeah" he said, "Yeah, we got lumber, we got metal, we even got tape measures." The foreman said "The trouble with you is you don't understand business. There are no inches. We have been using too many of them and there's not enough to go around."
Because what happened in the Great Depression was a slump in money. Human beings are so unbelievably stupid, that they confused money with wealth. They don't realize that money is a measure of wealth, in exactly the same way that meters are a measure of length. They think it is something that is valuable in and of itself. And as a result of that get into unbelievable trouble, in exactly the same way time is nothing but an abstract measure of motion.
And we keep counting time. We have the sensation time is running out, and we bug ourselves with this as we sit and watch the clock. Supposing you are working, are you watching the clock? If you are, what are you waiting for? Time off? Five o'clock, we can go home and have fun? Yeah, fun. What are you going to do when you get home? Have fun? Or are you going to watch TV, which is an electronic reproduction of life which doesn't even smell of anything and eat a TV dinner which is a kind of a warmed over airline nastiness until you just get tired and have to go to sleep. You know, the great society.
This is our problem you see. We are not alive, we are not awake. We are not living in the present."
*This speech was slightly edited for clarification.
