Important Announcement

  • 0:02 - 0:03
Hey guys! I've got some really good news.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
I just received the letter from the Singularity University
  • 0:06 - 0:09
saying that I got accepted with a scholarship
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    to their Graduate Studies Program.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    - Then what I wanted talk you about is
  • 0:16 - 0:19
not if you are gonna change the world
  • 0:19 - 0:22
but how you are gonna do it.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    - You ask people: Are they working on something...
  • 0:24 - 0:27
that can really change the world?
  • 0:27 - 0:29
And how many people can answer yes?
  • 0:29 - 0:32
You know you look for people who are really trying to make things a lot better
  • 0:32 - 0:34
not just a little better but a lot better.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
I'm really excited for all of you who are studying this.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
If I was a student this is where I would want to be.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    - Why are we here?
  • 0:45 - 0:49
Clearly there are incredible universities around the world
  • 0:49 - 0:52
and it's not to duplicate the efforts.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
It's to provide something distinctly different.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    To have a conversation occur
  • 0:59 - 1:01
that doesn't happen in other places.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    - The tools of creativity, of innovation, of disruptive change
  • 1:05 - 1:08
are in everybody's hands and they are not expensive.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    - One student that we had this year
  • 1:10 - 1:13
was named Fast Company's most influential women of 2010.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
One student has published eight papers
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    in neurocomputation and neuroprosthesis.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
One student is a founding member and program director of two NGOs.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    - The youngest one starting coding at the age of four.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
16% to 17% of the students have started companies.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    - It's time to dedicate your lifes
  • 1:30 - 1:33
to solving one of the world biggest challenges
  • 1:33 - 1:36
and if you are not doing that is time to reorient yourself towards that goal.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
Take this admonition to affect one billion people
  • 1:40 - 1:44
and you add to it to affect one billion people positively
  • 1:44 - 1:47
and answer the grand challenges of our times.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
Singularity University is an awesome place
  • 1:50 - 1:54
that was founded in 2008 by Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis
  • 1:54 - 1:56
and a bunch of other cool people.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
The idea is to take 80 among the smartest and the best
  • 1:59 - 2:03
scientists, enterpreneurs and thinkers from around the globe
  • 2:03 - 2:08
and bring them together at the NASA Ames Research Center
  • 2:08 - 2:10
in Silicon Valley for ten weeks.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
We are gonna have a crash course of
  • 2:12 - 2:18
nanotechnology, biotechnology, molecular engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics...
  • 2:18 - 2:20
All the fields that kind of are connected with
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    exponentially expanding technologies and
  • 2:23 - 2:27
utilize these technologies to bring about a better world.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
And whatever is you wanna do
  • 2:30 - 2:35
make sure it affects al least one billion people
  • 2:35 - 2:38
positively, within the next ten years. That's the challenge.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
So I'll be spending my whole summer there
  • 2:41 - 2:44
and I'll be meeting of kinds of cool and interesting people
  • 2:44 - 2:48
and start projects with them and really try to kind of
  • 2:48 - 2:51
do something about what I've talking about for years
  • 2:51 - 2:54
but I couldn't really do because I didn't have the resources.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    But now maybe I will!
  • 2:55 - 2:59
