"black./womyn.:conversations..." helen on...
-
0:01 - 0:03There was a woman
-
0:03 - 0:04that I was dating
-
0:06 - 0:09and um, she told me,
-
0:09 - 0:11--and this was the first time I ever questioned my disability
-
0:11 - 0:14and the impact it had on my social life--
-
0:14 - 0:21she said "Helen, I um, can't be with you 100%.
-
0:21 - 0:23I do love you, I do care for you,
-
0:23 - 0:27but I can't be with you 100%"
-
0:27 - 0:29And I said "why?"
-
0:29 - 0:30She would never say it.
-
0:30 - 0:32I said "because of my disability?"
-
0:32 - 0:34She said "yes".
-
0:35 - 0:38So I felt like, felt at that point,
-
0:38 - 0:39that if she was honest enough to tell me that,
-
0:39 - 0:42then most people are thinking that,
-
0:42 - 0:44that I'm only gonna give her but so much
-
0:44 - 0:47_as she's going to be able to give me.
-
0:48 - 0:53Um, so, it's real difficult.
-
0:54 - 0:55It's real difficult.
-
0:55 - 0:58I mean, yeah I meet women,
-
0:58 - 1:00I love women, I love beautiful women,
-
1:00 - 1:05but when I started to see that it's not, this is not for me,
-
1:05 - 1:08I'm just going to y'know let you go
-
1:08 - 1:10and that's just about mine,
-
1:10 - 1:12I have no problems with that,
-
1:12 - 1:18but I think that the black, black women, or black lesbians, or whatever you wanna call us,
-
1:18 - 1:28we are fearful of the unknown.
-
1:28 - 1:31To look at me, you don't know what this is.
-
1:31 - 1:33So you're afraid of it,
-
1:33 - 1:36cause you're not familiar with it.
-
1:36 - 1:41So it makes you more, um,
-
1:41 - 1:43you know, when we are afraid of things,
-
1:43 - 1:46we try to stay away from them,
-
1:46 - 1:50instead of trying to, to get the knowledge of what that is,
-
1:50 - 1:51or what that person is,
-
1:51 - 1:53or what that disability is,
-
1:53 - 1:56or why that person is the way they are.
-
1:56 - 2:02So we have a tendency to run away from things that are unfamiliar and that we're afraid of.
- Title:
- "black./womyn.:conversations..." helen on...
- Description:
-
helen talks about the hardship she has had in relationships due to her disabilty...part of a new documentary on lesbians of African descent...coming soon!.
"black./womyn.:conversations..." will be a feature length docu-film that will concern lesbians of African descent living in the U.S. It will include over 50 interviews with black lesbians of all ages /classes /nationalities/locations discussing a variety of topics including coming out, sexuality and religion, love and relationships, patriarchy, visibility in media, among others as well as a series of short vignettes representing the topics discussed. I'm hoping to provide a film that can encourage progressive dialogue between people on dealing with the image of the black lesbian and the stereotype that come with who black lesbians are portrayed to be. I hope to encourage conversation between black lesbians dealing with class and age, and the lack of communication between these groups and how that affects the overall unity between black lesbians as a group in society.
