Nostalgy-tv: The other Fryslân
-
0:43 - 0:48In the whole of Europe there almost doesn't exist a more colourful mix of languages, as in Nordfriesland.
-
0:48 - 0:53A unity that only since the 1970's exists as a separate district.
-
0:53 - 0:59Of the 160.000 inhabitants, only about 10.000 speak one of the nine Nordfrisian dialects,
-
0:59 - 1:02of the islands, or of the coastal region.
-
1:27 - 1:28Have you silaged already?
-
1:28 - 1:31We have just finished, there lies the heap.
-
1:31 - 1:35That big one there. We finished yesterday.
-
1:36 - 1:39How many tons, or how do you call that?
-
1:40 - 1:41How many däämde, you mean?
-
1:41 - 1:43Is it called that?
-
1:43 - 1:47Up and around 70 däämde.
That is 35 hectares. -
1:47 - 1:50Can you feed the cattle like that for the whole winter?
-
1:50 - 1:54Yes, we mow two, three times.
-
1:54 - 1:56First, second, third cut we call it.
-
1:57 - 2:00That is the first, that the second and there comes the third.
-
2:00 - 2:03And then we also have corn. 17 hectares.
-
2:24 - 2:28Every year it went worse with Frisian.
-
2:29 - 2:34Especially the last few years. But now it has stabilised.
-
2:36 - 2:40Maybe it even gets better now.
-
2:40 - 2:44But they are countable on the fingers of one hand,
-
2:44 - 2:46the kids that still speak Frisian.
-
2:46 - 2:50But there are coming more the last years.
-
2:50 - 2:55Can you still speak Frisian anywhere you want to?
-
2:56 - 3:01Here in the village you can. At the bank you can speak Frisian.
-
3:01 - 3:05When you go to the store, you can speak Frisian.
-
3:05 - 3:09In many places you can. At the bank and such.
-
3:10 - 3:14And at the townhall. There they all speak Frisian.
-
3:14 - 3:19There you can use it. And i do so very consciously.
-
3:58 - 4:03When i first came here, everything was in Frisian.
-
4:03 - 4:06You have to call the animals, the dogs, in Frisian.
-
4:07 - 4:11When you want to play with the children, you have to speak Frisian.
-
4:12 - 4:16Grandfather and grandmother here also speak Frisian of course.
-
4:16 - 4:19So you don't hear German for weeks.
-
4:19 - 4:22That is something else.
-
4:22 - 4:24Have you learned a lot here?
-
4:24 - 4:30I don't even know how long i was here, two months?
-
4:30 - 4:34Six weeks? The first time six weeks.
-
4:34 - 4:38When i went again, i could speak Frisian quite well.
-
4:38 - 4:43After a few more times, it becomes very normal to speak.
-
4:45 - 4:49There also always were a lot of contacts with the Dutch Fryslân.
-
4:49 - 4:55A library with all kinds of literature from the Frisian lands, was founded by Frederik Paulsen.
-
4:56 - 4:58The Ferring Stiftung, that runs the library now,
-
4:58 - 5:03supports research and Frisians from the three Frisian lands have meetings here.
-
5:06 - 5:14I think we are less of a unity here than you in West-Frisia.
-
5:14 - 5:26We also don't really have a centre here, that could have made us feel like a unity as Nord Frisians.
-
5:26 - 5:34The Nord Frisian movement has to work on that. Then it will come.
-
5:34 - 5:37Because of the existance of the Nordfriisk Instituut in Bredstedt...
-
5:37 - 5:42... it is clear we belong together as Nordfrisians.
-
5:42 - 5:52We as Nordfrisians shouldn't cut ourselves off from our common roots.
-
6:25 - 6:30Do you speak Frisian?
Not so much. -
6:31 - 6:37We spoke High-German at home. At my grandfathers' they did speak Frisian.
-
6:37 - 6:42But we are from another generation, aren't we.
-
6:42 - 6:45They still learn it at school.
-
6:45 - 6:50I am Frisian. That is just a part of us.
-
6:50 - 6:54But i don't really practise it much.
-
6:55 - 6:59My wife speaks High- and Low-German.
-
6:59 - 7:03My son said something in Frisian, but she didn't understand that.
-
7:03 - 7:07With my wife Low-German, with my children Frisian and with my dog High-German.
-
7:22 - 7:25What kind of language is this?
-
7:25 - 7:29This is the Nordfrisian dialect 'Süder goesharder'.
-
7:29 - 7:34It became extinct in the 80's. Nobody still speaks it.
-
7:34 - 7:38We try to reconstruct it by use of old recordings.
-
7:38 - 7:41This language doesn't exist anymore?
-
7:41 - 7:48The last speaker has past away. It was spoken in Schöbull and Hattstedt.
-
7:49 - 7:55In Schöbull it died out in the 60's and in Hattstedt in the 80's.
-
7:55 - 7:59The last speaker past away in 86'.
-
8:09 - 8:17With such recordings from the 50's, you amusingly hear...
-
8:17 - 8:19...that the ordinary people didn't have false teeth yet.
-
8:19 - 8:25You already can not understand it very well, because the dialect has gone extinct.
-
8:25 - 8:29With the teeth out, you only hear mumble, mumble.
-
8:29 - 8:32It is almost impossible to follow what they say.
-
8:32 - 8:38When the recordings get digitalized, the quality will be much better.
-
8:38 - 8:41It is difficult to understand right now.
-
8:41 - 8:47We want to reconstruct the grammar and words from this dialect.
-
8:47 - 8:53Because it is a shame that such a language disappears from the face of the earth, just like that.
-
8:59 - 9:06When science would say: your language has no chance of survival...
-
9:06 - 9:09... then we could say to the media:
-
9:09 - 9:17All Nordfrisians go to Heligoland and jump in the sea.
-
9:17 - 9:20That would be a spectacle. Fine to broadcast on television:
-
9:20 - 9:24The great end of 'The drama of the Nordfrisian'.
-
9:24 - 9:31But we are not like that. We go on with what lives in us.
-
9:31 - 9:35Things we don't want to do, we don't do.
-
9:36 - 9:42We live our lifes as we are.
