Jacque Fresco - Venus Project Special (2012)

  • 0:15 - 0:17
    The Venus Project
  • 0:17 - 0:20
Abundance for all through elimination of money.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    Utopia or more?
  • 0:22 - 0:26
The incredible project of a californian architect,
  • 0:26 - 0:31
who is convinced, he has found an exit for the economic- and financial crisis.½
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    - Hello to Newton
  • 0:33 - 0:37
Recalling the news of the past years
  • 0:37 - 0:41
two ever repeating core topix keep occurring
  • 0:41 - 0:44
on one hand the financial and economical crisis
  • 0:44 - 0:47
poverty, unemployment, everybody running short on money
  • 0:47 - 0:49
and the environmental crisis on the other
  • 0:49 - 0:51
How long will our planet keep enduring this?
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    We could ask ourselves:
  • 0:53 - 0:54
Does it have to be like this,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
are there alternatives and if so, which?
  • 0:57 - 1:02
A californian (?) architekt proposes a radical cut.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
Since 40 years Jacque Fresco is working on an alternative model
  • 1:06 - 1:09
that shall bring abundance for all.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
Of course, such promises must always be handled with care.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
But as long as we do not have any alternatives to offer,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
good ideas are always in demand.
  • 1:18 - 1:24
Decide, if the architect's Venus Project would be one of those good ideas.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    The Venus Projekt
  • 1:28 - 1:32
is a plan for social change that is feasible.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
It works towards a peaceful and sustainable global civilization
  • 1:36 - 1:40
where human beings, technology and nature coexist.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
For the initiator it outlines an alternative to strive for
  • 1:44 - 1:48
where human rights are not only paper proclamations
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    but a way of life.
  • 2:01 - 2:06
Jacque Fresco calls for a straightforward redesign of the culture in which
  • 2:06 - 2:11
war, poverty, hunger, debt and unnecessary human suffering are viewed not only as avoidable
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    but totally unacceptable.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    because its becoming increasingly obvious
  • 2:17 - 2:22
that the problems we face today will continue in the future.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    The Venus Project's research center
  • 2:32 - 2:36
constructed by Fresco and Roxanne Meadows
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    is located in Venus, Florida.
  • 3:42 - 3:46
(Jacque Fresco) If they draft you into the army to serve this country
  • 3:46 - 3:48
you put up your life for this country
  • 3:48 - 3:52
they should draft all the war industries:
  • 3:52 - 3:55
every cannon maker, machine gun maker
  • 3:55 - 4:00
automobiles, jeeps, warships - all drafted,
  • 4:00 - 4:03
so they're on the same basis of pay as the army.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
Then it's real. But if you make millions selling warships
  • 4:07 - 4:10
and machine guns to the army, then it's corrupt.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
If I had my way, if we had millions of men in the army
  • 4:13 - 4:16
I'd send them to school to become problem solvers
  • 4:16 - 4:18
how to get along with other nations.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
That's what we have to do, not kill.
  • 4:21 - 4:26
Soldiers are just killing machines; they're trained to kill.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
Social and environmental problems remain insurmountable,
  • 4:33 - 4:38
as long as only a few control the majority of the world's resources
  • 4:38 - 4:41
and profit is more important than the welfare of the people.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
Excessive profiteering leads to aberant behavior
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    which is widely spread today.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    Some people assume
  • 4:54 - 4:57
that we simply need more and better laws,
  • 4:57 - 5:00
in order to solve our problems.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
We have many laws, thousands and thousands,
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    they are just broken constantly.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
You can predict the shape of the future and the values if you know
  • 5:10 - 5:15
the trends of events in the ocean pollution, the scarcity of arable land.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
If you watch that degrading system grow
  • 5:19 - 5:23
I can predict the riots and killing and assassination.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
Human behavior is really generated by the surrounding environment.
  • 5:27 - 5:29
If there's a scarcity, say of water,
  • 5:29 - 5:33
it is prized and its price is high.
  • 5:36 - 5:40
Let's discuss scarcity as a system.
  • 5:40 - 5:43
Suppose it rained gold for about 3 days, gold dust.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
People would go out and shovel it in, fill their cellars, the attic,
  • 5:46 - 5:49
every drawer in the house. They'd throw out their clothing.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
If the rain kept up for a year so that gold was all over the place,
  • 5:52 - 5:55
people would sweep it out of the house,
  • 5:55 - 5:57
take their rings off, throw them away.
  • 5:57 - 6:02
And so human behavior undergoes change to that condition.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
There's only a policeman in front of something
  • 6:05 - 6:08
that people have need for, and don't have access to,
  • 6:08 - 6:11
so you put a guard there.
  • 6:11 - 6:16
But if lemon trees, orange trees and apple trees, grew all over the place,
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    you couldn't sell it.
  • 6:18 - 6:21
If you landed on an island that was so abundant with resources,
  • 6:21 - 6:24
you had 10 people, there were a thousand fish for every person
  • 6:24 - 6:28
if you wanted it, there were 10 times the amount
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    of breadfruit and bananas
  • 6:29 - 6:34
money would not come into existence. Private property would not come into existence.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
If the island was big enough:
  • 6:36 - 6:39
there were 10 people, there were 8000 acres
  • 6:39 - 6:43
no one would give a damn about staking out this particular area.
  • 6:43 - 6:46
So, we'd better take care of the environment, we'd better take care of one another
  • 6:46 - 6:49
and we'd better educate people to the highest possible levels of our ability
  • 6:49 - 6:52
in order to have a society."
