Occupy Movement Solution = Open Source Economy

  • 0:00 - 0:03
A solution to the current world economic crisis
  • 0:03 - 0:05
could be called an “Open Source Economy”.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
To explain what an open source economy is and could be,
  • 0:07 - 0:11
Lets compare it to the “Free Market Capitalist Economy”.
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Open Source is essentially
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    the opposite of Capitalism.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
In a the Capitalist system intellectual property,
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    inventions, designs, ideas,
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    engineering methods, schematics, etc
  • 0:21 - 0:23
are patented, copy righted , trademarked
  • 0:23 - 0:25
and the information is withheld buy groups and individuals
  • 0:25 - 0:29
so only they are able to maximise profit from them.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
This way they gain an advantage over others
  • 0:31 - 0:33
by not allowing anyone without the legal rights
  • 0:33 - 0:37
to see any of their now private information.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
Open Source on the other hand is exactly the opposite.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
The words Open Source mean the Source
  • 0:42 - 0:45
of the product, the technology, or whatever we are talking about
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    is Open for everyone
  • 0:46 - 0:50
to see, to use, to change, to expand on, to improve etc.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
So it benefits the inventor AND everyone else at the same time.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
It promotes a equal, sharing, collaborative culture for everyone.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
And there are very simple open source licences
  • 1:00 - 1:03
that will keep the work and open source products, open source.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
There already exists an open source culture in the world today.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
Many people use open source software like Ubuntu
  • 1:08 - 1:11
and we are now starting to see this trend spread into “hardware”.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
Open Source Hardware and Technology is a growing culture
  • 1:14 - 1:17
and it is and will continue to facilitate free access
  • 1:17 - 1:20
to how to create a lifestyle of your own design.
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    Slowly leading towards less reliance
  • 1:21 - 1:23
on the Free Market Capitalist system,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    allowing us to unplug
  • 1:25 - 1:28
and move in a sustainable and resilient direction.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
Sustainable because it allows us to be self-sufficient in communities,
  • 1:31 - 1:35
a trend that with time will allow individuals to be self-sufficient
  • 1:35 - 1:37
when the technology becomes advanced enough.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
Resilient because by learning how the technology works
  • 1:40 - 1:41
and how to repair and improve it,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
you can change and adapt it to meet your particular needs
  • 1:44 - 1:46
wherever you may be in the world.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    Owning the knowledge
  • 1:48 - 1:50
of how the technology you use works
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    affords you autonomy.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
This also opens up a new educational path.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
In life we get two educations,
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    one is given to us
  • 1:56 - 1:58
and the other we give to ourselves.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
The open source direction provides us
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    with open access to information
  • 2:01 - 2:04
to educate ourselves and others if we wish to.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
The possibilities from open sourcing information
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    on how technology works
  • 2:07 - 2:10
are endless when you start to think about it.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
Imagine what we could create locally and globally
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    by open sourcing the information
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    behind energy production technology,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    food production technology
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    and construction technology.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
We would truly be working towards a freer society.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
If you want to get involved and find out more
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    please visit “opensourceeconomy.org”
  • 2:28 - 2:30
where you will find links to people and communities
  • 2:30 - 2:33
that already exist and that are forming.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Actions speak louder than words.
  • 2:35 -
    Let's collaborate.
