-
Hi my name is Johnathan Nightingale. I am a Director of Firefox Engineering here at Mozilla.
-
I'd like to talk to you about What's New in Firefox 4.
-
The first thing I want to talk to you about is Speed.
-
It all starts with our Jeagermonkey Javascript engine.
-
It's the fastest we've ever ship.
-
It's up to 6 times faster than our previous versions of Firefox.
-
We've optimized our start up times,
-
we've popped up a lot sooner to get you on the web.
-
We've added Hardware Acceleration.
-
So interacting with pages, scrolling them, switching between a large number of tabs
-
The next thing you are going to notice when you install Firefox 4 is the new streamlined user interface.
-
We've made it a lot cleaner and it takes up a lot less space.
-
We've got rid of the firefox menu. We turned it into a button up in the top corner
-
It's just got the most frequently used things, the things you need most.
-
We've also made some changes to make it easier to get around when you are browsing the web.
-
The first one of these is the Switch to Tab.
-
When you have a bunch of open tabs in your browser and go to open something new
-
Firefox will tell you if there's already a copy of this tab that is opened.
-
For sites that you are living in all the time,
-
things like your email, your social networking sites,
-
We've added the feature called App Tabs,
-
so that you can right click and turn one of these things into an App Tab.
-
and make sure it's always available. It's pinned to the left end edge of your user interface,
-
It's really easy to jump back to it
-
and not have to go searching through hundreds of tabs for it.
-
And if you do have a hundred tabs, you're gonna love Panorama.
-
It's this new feature we've got that lets you organize your tabs into groups
-
You can drag and drop them.
-
Focus on one set of work at a time.
-
Instead of having to move all around your tab strip to get to the things you care about most.
-
All in all, it just makes it easier to browse the web
-
and live more of your life on the web.
-
Customization has always been a big priority of Firefox.
-
But in Firefox 4, we've made it even easier.
-
You can see the new Firefox 4 Add-ons Manager
-
includes all of your extensions, all of your plug-ins.
-
It also includes a search interface to help you find new add-ons and new ways to make Firefox your own.
-
One of the killer features we've added in Firefox 4 is sync.
-
We support the ability to sync all of your personal information between your various computers
-
So, if you've got your home computer and work computer or maybe if you've got an Android phone,
-
Firefox Sync lets your push all of your history,
-
bookmarks,
-
your saved passwords,
-
even your open tabs between those machines.
-
So it's really easy to get up and go
-
And have the same Firefox no matter where you are.
-
One thing that's different about the way we built sync,
-
is that all this personal information that's moving between your machines,
-
is encrypted locally before it hits the internet.
-
That's just part of our ongoing dedication to make sure that we're always doing as much as we can
-
to keep you safe when you are browsing online
-
and to make sure your that private data is your own and it doesn't belong to anybody else
-
And for web developers, Firefox 4 is the best we've ever shipped.
-
It's got an amazing array of open web technologies for building beautiful interactive websites online
-
HTML5, CSS3, Downloadable fonts, even WebGL for 3D accelerated graphics
-
This is the future of the web.
-
And it's never been easier to build incredible stuff online.
-
We're really excited about Firefox 4.
-
And the stuff I've talked about today is just a sampling.
-
Get Online.
-
Check out the feature list.
-
Grab a Copy and Take it for Spin yourself.
-
We've built it for you and we want to know what you think.
-
We think it's the best Firefox yet.
