Peter Joseph: Message to Occupy Wall Street & The World | The Zeitgeist Movement

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Hello this is Peter Joseph of The Zeitgeist Movement
  • 0:03 - 0:06
and I felt the need today to take a moment to publicly
  • 0:06 - 0:10
express a few concerns regarding the incredible explosion that has emerged
  • 0:10 - 0:13
accross the world born out of the "occupy wall street" initiative
  • 0:13 - 0:16
that began a few weeks ago in New York city.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
While the mainstream media continues to more less ignore,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
criticize and downplay the enormous growth,
  • 0:22 - 0:26
potential and effect of this global action against the financial system is having.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
I think if you put every single left-wing cause into a blender, and hit power
  • 0:30 - 0:33
this is the sludge you'd get.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
It's like Woodstock meets Burning Man,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
meets people with absolutly no purpose.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
The independent media has been shining
  • 0:38 - 0:41
as the bigger and free speach journalism more than ever.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
And the interesting thing is the more the mainsteam media
  • 0:44 - 0:48
continues its Status Quo preservation tactics,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
the more public attention will seek out and support
  • 0:51 - 0:54
the independent outlets for the power and interests
  • 0:54 - 0:57
in the occupy movement is simply not stoping.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
As of october 16th, over 1500 cities in the world
  • 1:00 - 1:04
are now activly taking part on what is likely the largest
  • 1:04 - 1:07
global action ever seen and I suspect many others
  • 1:07 - 1:11
seemingly different economic protests currently occuring worldwide
  • 1:11 - 1:16
would eventually unify with this global occupy movement as well.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
And while "peaceful protest" has been stapled of this action
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    police brutality and violent outbreaks
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    are unfortunatly occuring in pockets
  • 1:24 - 1:27
and this is something of deep concern to me
  • 1:27 - 1:31
It's one thing for all of us to give lip service to non-violence
  • 1:31 - 1:34
in such a situation and it's another to be educated
  • 1:34 - 1:36
and strategic in your work to restrain it.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
I speak not only to participants here,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
but also to law enforcement and hence the goverment
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    and financial powers they represent.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
In the case of violence occuring within an occupy movement,
  • 1:48 - 1:51
it's critical that if you see any person begining to act
  • 1:51 - 1:55
in a violent manner, you work with others to stop them in a peaceful way
  • 1:55 - 1:59
or make sure others are separated and not triggered into it.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
There's an important book that I recommend called "The Crowd:
  • 2:02 - 2:04
A study of the Popular Mind"
  • 2:04 - 2:07
which takes great care to discuss mass reactions.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
While many of us might think we can be completely objective
  • 2:10 - 2:13
and independent in our actions, the fact is we are
  • 2:13 - 2:16
deeply influenced by the effects around us.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
The mob mentality can take all almost subconsciously.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
This is very important to recognize within yourself and others,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
in order to be vigilant on both fronts.
  • 2:25 - 2:29
On that note, it's also critically important law enforcement
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    understand these dinamics as well.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
If you, the police, expect the crowd not to be violent
  • 2:35 - 2:40
then a concerted effort to withhold your communication of it, is required.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
Just as a single rue person can trigger an entire group
  • 2:44 - 2:46
to jump on board with violent acts,
  • 2:46 - 2:50
so do violent actions coming from you, the police.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
The more you show violence, the more likely it will generate it.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
And needless to say, there are many more protesters than are police
  • 2:57 - 3:00
and your weapons will be absolutly meaningless
  • 3:00 - 3:03
if these mobs ever work to turn against you.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
It's in yourself interest and protection to stop reacting
  • 3:06 - 3:10
in abusive manners. Every time you hurt or abuse another human being,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
you plant the seed of permission for them to hurt
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    and abuse you and others.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
You have nothing to gain by using force and everything to lose in the end.
  • 3:20 - 3:26
Now, all that aside there's a quick point I would like to make regard to demands and transition.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
I don't pretend to know what will occure
  • 3:29 - 3:31
as this movement continues to grow,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
but unless an informed, relevant set of demands are made,
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    its effect would be minimal.
  • 3:36 - 3:40
It's here I will speak with respect to the values of The Zeitgeist Movement
  • 3:40 - 3:43
along with my personal views on how
  • 3:43 - 3:45
we could possible transition into a more human,
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    sustainable balanced society.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
While many within the occupy movement promote various reforms
  • 3:51 - 3:55
of the current economic and political system, others such as
  • 3:55 - 3:58
The Zeitgeist Movement seek a complete overhaul.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
It's not the purpose of this video to expand upon
  • 4:01 - 4:04
the complete train of thought present in The Zeitgeist Movement's
  • 4:04 - 4:07
observations and proposals, but suffice it to say
  • 4:07 - 4:11
we seek a system based upon resource managment
  • 4:11 - 4:13
as the starting point of all industrial decisions
  • 4:13 - 4:17
coupled with a recognition that the efficiency enabled by
  • 4:17 - 4:20
our modern understandings in science and technology
  • 4:20 - 4:23
will be what can provide and meet the needs of the entire
  • 4:23 - 4:27
human population and create true sustainability.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
The manifestation of these elements are what comprise
  • 4:29 - 4:33
what we often we refer to as a "Resource-Based Economic Model".
  • 4:33 - 4:36
To understand the basis of this train of thought more clearly
  • 4:36 - 4:38
I do suggest two books as well:
  • 4:38 - 4:41
One is called "Critical Path" by Buckminster Fuller
  • 4:41 - 4:45
and the other is called "The Best That Money Can't Buy" by Jacque Fresco.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
From there the readership begin to see
  • 4:47 - 4:50
that our current financially-based economic model
  • 4:50 - 4:53
is intrinsically flawed, and no regulation of this system
  • 4:53 - 4:57
will likely solve the real problems we face at hand.
  • 4:57 - 5:01
And if this view is accepted, the view that we need
  • 5:01 - 5:04
to employ a completely different socio-economic model
  • 5:04 - 5:06
to meet the needs of the human population
  • 5:06 - 5:08
and become truly sustainable on the Planet Earth,
  • 5:08 - 5:12
the question of course becomes: How do we get there?
  • 5:12 - 5:15
In my personal view, the occupy movement could be the seed
  • 5:15 - 5:19
for a transition out of the current paradigm into a new one.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
By its natural evolution, the occupy movement has characteristics
  • 5:23 - 5:28
that are very revealing with respect to the true nature of the problems at hand.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
The fact that is act of complaint has occured without borders
  • 5:31 - 5:36
or in certain cases without even respect to the political system itself,
  • 5:36 - 5:40
rather targeting the financial system, shows an amazing new awareness.
  • 5:40 - 5:45
My first suggestion is to unify the regional movements
  • 5:45 - 5:48
into a global entity through representatives,
  • 5:48 - 5:51
where each major region has a personal link to each other.
  • 5:51 - 5:53
I believe this is starting to occur already.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
The meetings need to occur with these representatives
  • 5:56 - 6:00
to plant more concerted actions to reinforce
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    the global unity and presence.
  • 6:02 - 6:06
Second, a decision needs to be made as to
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    where your main focus is.
  • 6:08 - 6:11
To kick by reform the current system or
  • 6:11 - 6:13
to work to basically remove it as a whole
  • 6:14 - 6:17
and obviously there is gonna be a transitional phase
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    incorporating both as well.
  • 6:19 - 6:23
Either way, these global representatives would need to prepare
  • 6:23 - 6:28
a world occupy conference at a set location for the media to diggest.
  • 6:28 - 6:31
Where reform issues are presented, hence pushing recognition
  • 6:31 - 6:34
by the political establishment and the public.
  • 6:34 - 6:38
In the case of reform this is where each regional group
  • 6:38 - 6:41
gains recognition and organizes themselves to be able
  • 6:41 - 6:45
to engage their country specific govermental bodies.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
In the case of complete revolution and the interest
  • 6:48 - 6:51
to remove the model itself and install a totally new system,
  • 6:51 - 6:54
as advocated by The Zeitgeist Movement, a more radical
  • 6:54 - 6:58
undertaking is required, a parallel government needs to be created.
  • 6:58 - 7:03
Rather than work to get a seat at the proverbial table that exists,
  • 7:03 - 7:05
a new table needs to be created
  • 7:05 - 7:08
and the representatives of each region are brought in
  • 7:08 - 7:11
along with legal and technical teams associated,
  • 7:11 - 7:15
much detail could be explained on that but let's leave it there for now.
  • 7:15 - 7:19
Eventually this will create a virtual global institution
  • 7:19 - 7:22
that begins to prepare the new social system, as the
  • 7:22 - 7:26
old system continues its operation and inevitable failure
  • 7:26 - 7:29
if you understand what the system is
  • 7:29 - 7:32
and how it can't resurrect itself at this point.
  • 7:32 - 7:36
And once this model is defined, a massive public awareness campaign
  • 7:36 - 7:40
is commenced as the new governing body and its work is announced.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
The tipping point will come once the public
  • 7:43 - 7:45
begins to see the merit of the new social proposal
  • 7:45 - 7:49
hence recognizing the governing entity itself and eventually
  • 7:49 - 7:52
giving it priority over the prior political establishment.
  • 7:52 - 7:57
Now, what I just turned out here is extremely generalized
  • 7:57 - 7:59
and I'm sure it raises numerous questions.
  • 7:59 - 8:03
I only want to express this as a logical train of thought
  • 8:03 - 8:07
and broad strokes on how maybe true global revolution could occur
  • 8:07 - 8:10
and hence plant this seed of possibility and organization.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
There are countless people that had been talking about change
  • 8:13 - 8:16
for a long period of time. My question to you is:
  • 8:16 - 8:18
Are you really prepared to do what it takes
  • 8:18 - 8:20
to actually get the change done.
  • 8:20 - 8:22
If you would like to know more about The Zeitgeist Movement,
  • 8:22 - 8:25
please visit thezeitgeistmovement.com and also know
  • 8:25 - 8:29
that we have over thousand chapters across 70 countries at this time,
  • 8:29 - 8:35
working in tandem to, again, create the type of social change I just described.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
So, if you would like to become a part of the movement,
  • 8:37 - 8:41
please go to the movement's site, clic on the country and go
  • 8:41 - 8:44
and find a chapter in your region or create one.
  • 8:44 -
    Thank you for listening.
