Peter Joseph: Message to Occupy Wall Street & The World | The Zeitgeist Movement
-
0:00 - 0:03Hello this is Peter Joseph of The Zeitgeist Movement
-
0:03 - 0:06and I felt the need today to take a moment to publicly
-
0:06 - 0:10express a few concerns regarding the incredible explosion that has emerged
-
0:10 - 0:13accross the world born out of the "occupy wall street" initiative
-
0:13 - 0:16that began a few weeks ago in New York city.
-
0:16 - 0:19While the mainstream media continues to more less ignore,
-
0:19 - 0:22criticize and downplay the enormous growth,
-
0:22 - 0:26potential and effect of this global action against the financial system is having.
-
0:26 - 0:30I think if you put every single left-wing cause into a blender, and hit power
-
0:30 - 0:33this is the sludge you'd get.
-
0:33 - 0:35It's like Woodstock meets Burning Man,
-
0:35 - 0:36meets people with absolutly no purpose.
-
0:36 - 0:38The independent media has been shining
-
0:38 - 0:41as the bigger and free speach journalism more than ever.
-
0:41 - 0:44And the interesting thing is the more the mainsteam media
-
0:44 - 0:48continues its Status Quo preservation tactics,
-
0:48 - 0:51the more public attention will seek out and support
-
0:51 - 0:54the independent outlets for the power and interests
-
0:54 - 0:57in the occupy movement is simply not stoping.
-
0:57 - 1:00As of october 16th, over 1500 cities in the world
-
1:00 - 1:04are now activly taking part on what is likely the largest
-
1:04 - 1:07global action ever seen and I suspect many others
-
1:07 - 1:11seemingly different economic protests currently occuring worldwide
-
1:11 - 1:16would eventually unify with this global occupy movement as well.
-
1:16 - 1:19And while "peaceful protest" has been stapled of this action
-
1:19 - 1:22police brutality and violent outbreaks
-
1:22 - 1:24are unfortunatly occuring in pockets
-
1:24 - 1:27and this is something of deep concern to me
-
1:27 - 1:31It's one thing for all of us to give lip service to non-violence
-
1:31 - 1:34in such a situation and it's another to be educated
-
1:34 - 1:36and strategic in your work to restrain it.
-
1:36 - 1:39I speak not only to participants here,
-
1:39 - 1:42but also to law enforcement and hence the goverment
-
1:42 - 1:45and financial powers they represent.
-
1:45 - 1:48In the case of violence occuring within an occupy movement,
-
1:48 - 1:51it's critical that if you see any person begining to act
-
1:51 - 1:55in a violent manner, you work with others to stop them in a peaceful way
-
1:55 - 1:59or make sure others are separated and not triggered into it.
-
1:59 - 2:02There's an important book that I recommend called "The Crowd:
-
2:02 - 2:04A study of the Popular Mind"
-
2:04 - 2:07which takes great care to discuss mass reactions.
-
2:07 - 2:10While many of us might think we can be completely objective
-
2:10 - 2:13and independent in our actions, the fact is we are
-
2:13 - 2:16deeply influenced by the effects around us.
-
2:16 - 2:19The mob mentality can take all almost subconsciously.
-
2:19 - 2:23This is very important to recognize within yourself and others,
-
2:23 - 2:25in order to be vigilant on both fronts.
-
2:25 - 2:29On that note, it's also critically important law enforcement
-
2:29 - 2:32understand these dinamics as well.
-
2:32 - 2:35If you, the police, expect the crowd not to be violent
-
2:35 - 2:40then a concerted effort to withhold your communication of it, is required.
-
2:40 - 2:44Just as a single rue person can trigger an entire group
-
2:44 - 2:46to jump on board with violent acts,
-
2:46 - 2:50so do violent actions coming from you, the police.
-
2:50 - 2:53The more you show violence, the more likely it will generate it.
-
2:53 - 2:57And needless to say, there are many more protesters than are police
-
2:57 - 3:00and your weapons will be absolutly meaningless
-
3:00 - 3:03if these mobs ever work to turn against you.
-
3:03 - 3:06It's in yourself interest and protection to stop reacting
-
3:06 - 3:10in abusive manners. Every time you hurt or abuse another human being,
-
3:10 - 3:13you plant the seed of permission for them to hurt
-
3:13 - 3:15and abuse you and others.
-
3:15 - 3:18You have nothing to gain by using force and everything to lose in the end.
-
3:20 - 3:26Now, all that aside there's a quick point I would like to make regard to demands and transition.
-
3:26 - 3:29I don't pretend to know what will occure
-
3:29 - 3:31as this movement continues to grow,
-
3:31 - 3:34but unless an informed, relevant set of demands are made,
-
3:34 - 3:36its effect would be minimal.
-
3:36 - 3:40It's here I will speak with respect to the values of The Zeitgeist Movement
-
3:40 - 3:43along with my personal views on how
-
3:43 - 3:45we could possible transition into a more human,
-
3:45 - 3:48sustainable balanced society.
-
3:48 - 3:51While many within the occupy movement promote various reforms
-
3:51 - 3:55of the current economic and political system, others such as
-
3:55 - 3:58The Zeitgeist Movement seek a complete overhaul.
-
3:58 - 4:01It's not the purpose of this video to expand upon
-
4:01 - 4:04the complete train of thought present in The Zeitgeist Movement's
-
4:04 - 4:07observations and proposals, but suffice it to say
-
4:07 - 4:11we seek a system based upon resource managment
-
4:11 - 4:13as the starting point of all industrial decisions
-
4:13 - 4:17coupled with a recognition that the efficiency enabled by
-
4:17 - 4:20our modern understandings in science and technology
-
4:20 - 4:23will be what can provide and meet the needs of the entire
-
4:23 - 4:27human population and create true sustainability.
-
4:27 - 4:29The manifestation of these elements are what comprise
-
4:29 - 4:33what we often we refer to as a "Resource-Based Economic Model".
-
4:33 - 4:36To understand the basis of this train of thought more clearly
-
4:36 - 4:38I do suggest two books as well:
-
4:38 - 4:41One is called "Critical Path" by Buckminster Fuller
-
4:41 - 4:45and the other is called "The Best That Money Can't Buy" by Jacque Fresco.
-
4:45 - 4:47From there the readership begin to see
-
4:47 - 4:50that our current financially-based economic model
-
4:50 - 4:53is intrinsically flawed, and no regulation of this system
-
4:53 - 4:57will likely solve the real problems we face at hand.
-
4:57 - 5:01And if this view is accepted, the view that we need
-
5:01 - 5:04to employ a completely different socio-economic model
-
5:04 - 5:06to meet the needs of the human population
-
5:06 - 5:08and become truly sustainable on the Planet Earth,
-
5:08 - 5:12the question of course becomes: How do we get there?
-
5:12 - 5:15In my personal view, the occupy movement could be the seed
-
5:15 - 5:19for a transition out of the current paradigm into a new one.
-
5:19 - 5:23By its natural evolution, the occupy movement has characteristics
-
5:23 - 5:28that are very revealing with respect to the true nature of the problems at hand.
-
5:28 - 5:31The fact that is act of complaint has occured without borders
-
5:31 - 5:36or in certain cases without even respect to the political system itself,
-
5:36 - 5:40rather targeting the financial system, shows an amazing new awareness.
-
5:40 - 5:45My first suggestion is to unify the regional movements
-
5:45 - 5:48into a global entity through representatives,
-
5:48 - 5:51where each major region has a personal link to each other.
-
5:51 - 5:53I believe this is starting to occur already.
-
5:53 - 5:56The meetings need to occur with these representatives
-
5:56 - 6:00to plant more concerted actions to reinforce
-
6:00 - 6:02the global unity and presence.
-
6:02 - 6:06Second, a decision needs to be made as to
-
6:06 - 6:08where your main focus is.
-
6:08 - 6:11To kick by reform the current system or
-
6:11 - 6:13to work to basically remove it as a whole
-
6:14 - 6:17and obviously there is gonna be a transitional phase
-
6:17 - 6:19incorporating both as well.
-
6:19 - 6:23Either way, these global representatives would need to prepare
-
6:23 - 6:28a world occupy conference at a set location for the media to diggest.
-
6:28 - 6:31Where reform issues are presented, hence pushing recognition
-
6:31 - 6:34by the political establishment and the public.
-
6:34 - 6:38In the case of reform this is where each regional group
-
6:38 - 6:41gains recognition and organizes themselves to be able
-
6:41 - 6:45to engage their country specific govermental bodies.
-
6:45 - 6:48In the case of complete revolution and the interest
-
6:48 - 6:51to remove the model itself and install a totally new system,
-
6:51 - 6:54as advocated by The Zeitgeist Movement, a more radical
-
6:54 - 6:58undertaking is required, a parallel government needs to be created.
-
6:58 - 7:03Rather than work to get a seat at the proverbial table that exists,
-
7:03 - 7:05a new table needs to be created
-
7:05 - 7:08and the representatives of each region are brought in
-
7:08 - 7:11along with legal and technical teams associated,
-
7:11 - 7:15much detail could be explained on that but let's leave it there for now.
-
7:15 - 7:19Eventually this will create a virtual global institution
-
7:19 - 7:22that begins to prepare the new social system, as the
-
7:22 - 7:26old system continues its operation and inevitable failure
-
7:26 - 7:29if you understand what the system is
-
7:29 - 7:32and how it can't resurrect itself at this point.
-
7:32 - 7:36And once this model is defined, a massive public awareness campaign
-
7:36 - 7:40is commenced as the new governing body and its work is announced.
-
7:40 - 7:43The tipping point will come once the public
-
7:43 - 7:45begins to see the merit of the new social proposal
-
7:45 - 7:49hence recognizing the governing entity itself and eventually
-
7:49 - 7:52giving it priority over the prior political establishment.
-
7:52 - 7:57Now, what I just turned out here is extremely generalized
-
7:57 - 7:59and I'm sure it raises numerous questions.
-
7:59 - 8:03I only want to express this as a logical train of thought
-
8:03 - 8:07and broad strokes on how maybe true global revolution could occur
-
8:07 - 8:10and hence plant this seed of possibility and organization.
-
8:10 - 8:13There are countless people that had been talking about change
-
8:13 - 8:16for a long period of time. My question to you is:
-
8:16 - 8:18Are you really prepared to do what it takes
-
8:18 - 8:20to actually get the change done.
-
8:20 - 8:22If you would like to know more about The Zeitgeist Movement,
-
8:22 - 8:25please visit thezeitgeistmovement.com and also know
-
8:25 - 8:29that we have over thousand chapters across 70 countries at this time,
-
8:29 - 8:35working in tandem to, again, create the type of social change I just described.
-
8:35 - 8:37So, if you would like to become a part of the movement,
-
8:37 - 8:41please go to the movement's site, clic on the country and go
-
8:41 - 8:44and find a chapter in your region or create one.
-
8:44 -Thank you for listening.
