Rounding Decimals

  • 0:01 - 0:07
    0.710
    Round 9.564, or nine and
    five hundred sixty-four
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    Thousandths, to the nearest tenth.
  • 0:11 - 0:17
So lie me write it a bit larger, 9.564
  • 0:17 - 0:19
And we need to round to the nearest tenth.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    So what's the tenth place?
  • 0:22 - 0:24
The tenths place is right here
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    This represents 5 tenths.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
This is the ones place, this is the tenths place, this is
  • 0:31 - 0:33
The hundredths place, and this is the
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    Thousandths place right here
  • 0:35 - 0:38
So we need to round to the nearest tenth.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
So if we round up, this will be 9.6
  • 0:42 - 0:45
If we round down, this will be 9.5
  • 0:45 - 0:48
And just like regular rounding, when we're not
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Dealing with decimals, you move to one spot, or you look
  • 0:51 - 0:55
At one place to the right or one place lower, I guess, and
  • 0:55 - 0:58
You say is that 5 larger
  • 0:58 - 1:02
If it is, you round if it isn't,you round down
  • 1:02 - 1:06
6 is definitely 5 or larger, so we want to round up.
  • 1:10 - 1:20
So this 9.564 becomes 9.6, or we can call this
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    Nine and sixth tenths.
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    And then we're done!
