David Lynch interviews Paul McCartney about Meditation and Maharishi
-
0:00 - 0:06First of all, it's a real big honor
to interview you, to talk to you Paul. -
0:06 - 0:11And, I gotta tell you,
I am not a professional interviewer. -
0:11 - 0:15But I'm curious, so I'll just ask you,
you know, some things. -
0:15 - 0:16Yeah.
-
0:16 - 0:24And I'm curious, um, I assume sometime
in the 60s... set the stage... -
0:24 - 0:31when did you first hear the word "meditation"
and what did you make of it? -
0:31 - 0:39It was actually George Harrison's wife, Patty,
who had heard that Maharishi was coming to town. -
0:40 - 0:44And she said we should all go.
It was one of those things. -
0:44 - 0:48And I was personally
not in a good... good place. -
0:48 - 0:51I think, you know,
just overdoing it in the 60s. -
0:51 - 0:55So I was just not very sort of centered,
and I was looking for something. -
0:55 - 0:57I think we all were.
-
0:57 - 1:02So we heard that Maharishi was going
to have a meeting and give a lecture. -
1:03 - 1:07Um, so that was the first time
I'd heard about meditation, -
1:07 - 1:10but we'd actually seen him when
we were kids growing up in Liverpool. -
1:10 - 1:15Because, as you know, he went around
the world seven times to spread his message. -
1:15 - 1:17And he was on TV.
-
1:17 - 1:22And we remembered this giggly little guy,
and we thought we loved him. -
1:22 - 1:27We just said he's so cool, you know.
And he just on TV and he was giving an interview -
1:27 - 1:33and he would giggle... that fabulous laugh of his.
And he was very entertaining and very attractive. -
1:33 - 1:38So we all said, "That's that guy!"
But then I say he was giving a lecture. -
1:38 - 1:39Where was it?
-
1:39 - 1:40In London.
-
1:40 - 1:42Do you remember the place?
-
1:42 - 1:47I don't remember it. I think it was in
Kensington, Chelsea or somewhere. -
1:47 - 1:50But, um, so that was the first time
I heard about him. -
1:50 - 1:52We all went along to listen.
-
1:52 - 1:57Uh-huh. And in the talk,
what feeling, you know, -
1:57 - 2:01came over you about what
he was saying, his message? -
2:02 - 2:09It was, um, very interesting.
It was very calming. -
2:09 - 2:15And it seemed like something
that was worth trying. -
2:16 - 2:21He put it very well.
He made it seem simple. -
2:21 - 2:26He made is seem very attractive.
And so I think we were all just sold. -
2:26 - 2:32And, I say, his personality was a lot to do with
Maharishi, you know, um, you know, -
2:32 - 2:38I think you'd seen other people who were
maybe a little more serious, um, -
2:38 - 2:41which wasn't a bad thing,
but he put humor. -
2:41 - 2:47He had a very infectious sense of humor,
so I think that was very attractive to us. -
2:47 - 2:48It was a great message.
-
2:48 - 2:53It was something I think we felt
we needed, but put over in this way... -
2:53 - 2:55It was very attractive.

David Lynch: First of all its a real big honor to interview you, to talk to you Paul, and I've got to tell you I am not a professional interviewer. But I'm curious. So I'll just ask you some things. And I'm curious-- I assume some time in the sixties, set the stage, when did you first hear the word meditation and what did you make of it?
Paul McCartney: It was actually George Harrisons wife, Pattie, who had heard that Maharishi was coming to town. And she said we should all go. It was one of those things. And I was personally not in a good place. I think you know just over doing it in the sixties. So I was just not very--sort of --centered and I was looking for something. I think we all were. So we heard that Maharishi was going to have a meeting and give a lecture. So that was the first time Id heard about meditation. But we'd actually seen him when we were kids growing up in Liverpool. Because as you know he went around the world seven times to spread his message. And he was on TV. And we remembered this giggling little guy and we thought, we loved him. We just said he's so cool! you know. And he was just on TV, and he was giving an interview and he would giggle--that fabulous laugh of his. And he was very entertaining and very attractive. So we all said that's that guy! But then I say, he was giving a lecture.
David Lynch: Where was it?
Paul McCartney: In London.
David Lynch: But do you remember the place?
Paul McCartney: I don't remember it. I think it was in Kensington, Chelsea or somewhere. But—so that was the first time I heard about it and we all went along to listen.
David Lynch: And in the talk—what feeling, you know, came over you about what he was saying--his message?
