LIS: Si - LMG: No! (Part 1 of 2)

  • 0:00 - 0:04
[ This video has no audio, in honor of 'No Audio Day' ... ]
  • 0:04 - 0:07
[ ... and a good No Audio Day to you! ]
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    Hello ASL Community!
  • 0:09 - 0:12
I usually post my vlogs on the 1st and 15th of each month,
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    but one viewer
  • 0:14 - 0:16
notified me of something; when I looked into it,
  • 0:16 - 0:21
I was so disturbed that I just had to let you know about it.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
If someone were to tell you that ASL wasn't a true language,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
that it was all just a bunch of rudimentary
  • 0:27 - 0:30
miming and gesturing, how would you feel?
  • 0:30 - 0:32
Sad to say, that's precisely what's happening here in Italy.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
For years now, the Italian signing community,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
comprised of both Deaf and hearing signers,
  • 0:39 - 0:43
have been striving to convince their government
  • 0:43 - 0:46
to recognize their signed language: LIS.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
They've submitted a document regarding LIS to the government,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
which the government is ready to officially recognize
  • 0:54 - 0:58
however they want to replace the acronym 'LIS' with 'LMG',
  • 0:58 - 1:01
essentially meaning 'Language of Miming and Gesturing'
  • 1:01 - 1:02
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    … 'Miming and Gesturing'???
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Hey, I've got an idea: Maybe we should start referring to
  • 1:07 - 1:11
spoken Italian as 'LMG' - Language of Moans and Grunts!
  • 1:11 - 1:17
[ terrible imitation of spoken Italian… but you get the point ]
  • 1:17 - 1:19
  • 1:19 - 1:22
If you'd like more information, check out the links below.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
Click on them for more videos and articles on the topic.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
Anyway, I didn't make this video simply because I wanted
  • 1:28 - 1:31
to share this information with you and have that be it.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
No, this is a call to ACTION.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
These are our Italian brothers and sisters! Though they have
  • 1:37 - 1:39
a different signed language, they are a part of the
  • 1:39 - 1:42
global signing community, and as such, share our interests.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
… but how can we lend our support?
  • 1:44 - 1:49
Well, I'm glad you asked. You can do three things.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
Here's the first, and most significant way
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    to lend your support:
  • 1:52 - 1:56
The Italian signing - LIS - community has set up an
  • 1:56 - 1:59
online petition; you can show your support
  • 1:59 - 2:02
by logging on to that petition and signing it.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
The petition's link is below, the first one listed.
  • 2:04 - 2:09
Since the petition is in Italian, you may feel a bit lost,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
unsure of how to fill it out. No worries, simply click here.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
You'll see a video explaining and demonstrating
  • 2:16 - 2:19
the process, it's really easy, so simple.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
One thing to keep in mind, though: Unless you confirm
  • 2:22 - 2:25
your email address, your signature is not valid.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
Some have signed the petition thinking all is well,
  • 2:28 - 2:29
when in fact, they've missed one step,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    thereby invalidating their signature!
  • 2:31 - 2:32
How so? Click on that there video.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
The second way to lend your support? If you have
  • 2:35 - 2:39
a Facebook account, log in, enter the name
  • 2:39 - 2:41
of this group, and join 'em. That way you can keep
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    updated on any developments.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
The third thing you can do? Tell your friends!
  • 2:45 - 2:48
If you're Deaf, tell your Deaf friends.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
If you're an ASL teacher, tell your students.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
If you're an interpreter, tell your colleagues.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
Send an email, tell them in person, forward this vlog,
  • 2:56 - 2:59
make your own vlog! The important thing is that
  • 2:59 - 3:02
you get the word out. It doesn't matter if you're Deaf,
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    Hard-of-Hearing, hearing, a CODA, or a NERDA…
  • 3:06 - 3:10
point is, we're all a part of one big community:
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    the global signing community.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    As for those who do not understand sign language;
  • 3:15 - 3:18
we need to help them understand.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
Sign the petition. Join the Facebook group.
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    Tell your friends.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    Sign
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    Power.
  • 3:26 -
