Meet Limor "ladyada" Fried at Adafruit Industries!

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    [printing sound]
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    I started Adafruit Industries
  • 0:04 - 0:06
back in my college dorm room at MIT
  • 0:06 - 0:08
and now I've grown the company to 25 people
  • 0:08 - 0:10
and we're here in downtown Manhatten.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
My name is Limor Fried and I am founder
  • 0:13 - 0:15
and lead engineer of Adafruit Industries.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
My passion is teaching people electronics
  • 0:17 - 0:19
and showing them just how fun engineering can be.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    [printing sound]
  • 0:21 - 0:23
We design all sorts of electronic kits here
  • 0:23 - 0:27
from DIY cell phone chargers to solar power systems
  • 0:27 - 0:29
to bright and beautiful LED displays.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
All kinds of projects so that
  • 0:31 - 0:33
people can learn a bit of electronics
  • 0:33 - 0:36
and see how much fun it is to build stuff on their own.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
One of the really interesting things about
  • 0:37 - 0:39
the way we do business here at Adafruit
  • 0:39 - 0:42
is that not only do I design and manufacture electronics
  • 0:42 - 0:45
but then I give away the recipe of how it's done.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
And I do this because I think it's really important
  • 0:47 - 0:51
for people to not only understand how we make stuff
  • 0:51 - 0:54
but how they can make stuff themselves at home.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
We do almost everything here at Adafruit
  • 0:56 - 0:59
from designing the schematic and laying out the circuitboard
  • 0:59 - 1:01
to placing these little teeny components
  • 1:01 - 1:03
on the circuitboard and assembling them here,
  • 1:03 - 1:06
to making kits, to writing the software
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    and the tutorials.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
Everything necessary from beginning to end
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    to learn about electronics.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
Here at Adafruit we have one of the
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    largest collections of electronics tutorials.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
We have hundreds of tutorials online
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    available for free.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
I give away all this information so that
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    people can learn, share and
  • 1:23 - 1:25
build their own businesses from it.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
We have 800 products in store
  • 1:27 - 1:29
and we ship hundreds of orders a day
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    all around the globe.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    [printing sound]
  • 1:32 - 1:34
We recently came up with a badging system
  • 1:34 - 1:36
and the idea here is that we want to reward kids
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    for learning modern technological skills.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    So teachers, parents and educators
  • 1:42 - 1:44
can give a kid a badge when
  • 1:44 - 1:46
they learn something like 3D printing
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    or building a robot.
  • 1:48 - 1:49
We've been getting letters and photos
  • 1:49 - 1:52
from around the world, from kids and their parents
  • 1:52 - 1:54
showing off the cool projects they built
  • 1:54 - 1:57
with Adafruit products and our tutorial system
  • 1:57 - 1:59
and then the badge that they earn
  • 1:59 - 1:59
    once they've completed.
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    [printing sound]
  • 2:00 - 2:04
I also do a weekly live Internet video show
  • 2:04 - 2:06
once a week on Saturday nights where hundreds of people
  • 2:06 - 2:08
show up and ask me the engineer
  • 2:08 - 2:10
any kinds of electronics engineering questions
  • 2:10 - 2:12
and I answer them live on the Internet.
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    [printing sound]
  • 2:13 - 2:17
A lot of people find us because of our great tutorials
  • 2:17 - 2:20
but what we're really known for is our great prices
  • 2:20 - 2:23
our fast shipping and our excellent customer support.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
I've found that the more we help people by
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    teaching them and showing them
  • 2:27 - 2:28
how to be creative on their own
  • 2:28 - 2:31
the more they rewarded us by being great customers
  • 2:31 - 2:34
and also being part of our fun community.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    Thanks for watching.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
I can't wait to see what you build up next.
  • 2:38 - 2:39
Now, time for me to get back to work
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    here at Adafruit.
  • 2:42 - 2:48
    [printing sound]
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    [printer head return sound]
