Karma - Bond to Past and Future
-
0:05 - 0:07Why is my life the way it is?
-
0:07 - 0:10(Sounds of birds singing and a bell)
-
0:11 - 0:17This world it is the way it is because we are the way we are.
-
0:19 - 0:21(Bell sound)
-
0:23 - 0:26And we are the way we are because there is Karma
-
0:31 - 0:35Karma Bond to the Past and Future
-
0:36 - 0:37(Sound of birds chirping, bells ringing, and a dog barking)
-
0:39 - 0:42Inspired by Pra Acharn Tippakorn Sukhito
-
0:42 - 0:47Every morning we wake up to a new day.
-
0:55 - 1:02but every morning we also wake up to our old life.
-
1:03 - 1:06To the life that we have created.
-
1:08 - 1:10(forest sounds as the monk walks through it)
-
1:11 - 1:12Last week.
-
1:12 - 1:15Last year
-
1:15 - 1:18Last life
-
1:18 - 1:21This is our Karma.
-
1:21 - 1:24We cannot escape it.
-
1:28 - 1:32Karma Our Life
-
1:40 - 1:41(Chanting)
-
1:41 - 1:46Karma is a sanscrit word. It means "action".
-
1:48 - 1:52We can easily see some of our Karma.
-
1:53 - 1:56Let's just think what we did.
-
1:56 - 1:57Yesterday.
-
1:57 - 1:59Last year.
-
2:00 - 2:03In our childhood.
-
2:05 - 2:07Or in our last life.
-
2:08 - 2:11If we can remember that.
-
2:12 - 2:17What ever we did, this is our Karma.
-
2:17 - 2:20This has become our life.
-
2:20 - 2:22Now.
-
2:27 - 2:30Karma Whatever we did.
-
2:34 - 2:37The Buddhist says "Life is about suffering".
-
2:46 - 2:50Very often we create suffering.
-
2:50 - 2:51For ourselves
-
2:51 - 2:56or for others. We know that.
-
2:56 - 2:59We say bad things.
-
2:59 - 3:01We're impatient.
-
3:01 - 3:03We hurt.
-
3:07 - 3:11Karma We create suffering.
-
3:12 - 3:15We do create suffering around us.
-
3:16 - 3:21This means we fill our own world with suffering.
-
3:25 - 3:29How can we expect to find anything else in this world
-
3:29 - 3:32other than suffering?
-
3:35 - 3:40We will find exactly what we had previously provided.
-
3:40 - 3:43We can create our own hell,
-
3:43 - 3:47but we can just as well create heaven.
-
3:52 - 3:55Karma Heaven or hell.
-
3:58 - 4:00(People talking, market and traffic sounds)
-
4:13 - 4:15Wherever we look in this universe,
-
4:15 - 4:19there is cause and effect.
-
4:19 - 4:22Nothing ever happens out of thin air.
-
4:27 - 4:30This law of cause and effect also applies
-
4:30 - 4:32to our destiny.
-
4:32 - 4:36To the way our life evolves.
-
4:36 - 4:40Whatever we do, whatever we even think
-
4:40 - 4:43will have some effect on our life.
-
4:43 - 4:47Even if just a tiny little bit.
-
4:49 - 4:52Our thoughts and feelings
-
4:52 - 4:56form the world within us.
-
4:58 - 4:59Our words and actions
-
4:59 - 5:04form the world around us.
-
5:18 - 5:22We are constantly shaping our world.
-
5:24 - 5:29And we are shaping our life, little by little.
-
5:30 - 5:34Because for every cause,
-
5:34 - 5:38there must be an effect.
-
5:45 - 5:48Karma Cause and effect
-
5:52 - 5:54(Birds chirping)
-
5:55 - 5:56Whatever we do or think
-
5:56 - 6:03shapes our world, a tiny little bit.
-
6:04 - 6:07Be towards greed and anger
-
6:08 - 6:12or be it towards love and kindness.
-
6:15 - 6:18We can increase suffering in our world
-
6:18 - 6:21or we can prevent suffering.
-
6:21 - 6:27It is up to us.
-
6:32 - 6:36Karma We shape our world.
-
6:36 - 6:40So our actions directly affect our world.
-
6:40 - 6:44Our own as well as other people's world.
-
6:45 - 6:49Because from a Buddhist perspective all is one.
-
6:49 - 6:53Nothing is separate. All is connected.
-
6:53 - 6:56We are all connected.
-
6:56 - 7:00Our own future and the future of others.
-
7:00 - 7:05They interact like cogwheels in a clock.
-
7:05 - 7:12They are one.
-
7:17 - 7:20Karma All is one
-
7:21 - 7:22(Birds continue chirping. Piano sound)
-
7:23 - 7:27Let's see our life as a garden.
-
7:28 - 7:30If we take good care of it,
-
7:30 - 7:33it can be beautiful.
-
7:33 - 7:37Obviously, this will take time and effort.
-
7:37 - 7:38(water sound)
-
7:40 - 7:42And obviously there are a lot of things in our garden
-
7:42 - 7:45beyond our control.
-
7:45 - 7:47The weather,
-
7:47 - 7:50the seasons or maybe some other people
-
7:50 - 7:54whose intentions are different from ours.
-
7:54 - 7:58But, after all, we are the gardener.
-
7:59 - 8:00We will determine what our garden
-
8:00 - 8:02will finely look like.
-
8:05 - 8:08Karma Time and effort
-
8:10 - 8:14(Birds chirping and men chanting)
-
8:16 - 8:20Our present life is created by our Karma
-
8:20 - 8:23We cannot escape it.
-
8:28 - 8:31Since we have created suffering in the past,
-
8:31 - 8:35there will be future suffering too.
-
8:35 - 8:41The future is just the echo of our past actions.
-
8:41 - 8:44For a long time, we have been filling
-
8:44 - 8:45the world around us with our
-
8:45 - 8:48anger and greed.
-
8:50 - 8:53And now it is still there.
-
8:53 - 8:56For example, in the reactions and the feelings
-
8:56 - 9:01of the people around us, in various situations.
-
9:01 - 9:04The suffering we have previously created
-
9:04 - 9:07will now create new suffering.
-
9:12 - 9:15Karma Suffering creates suffering.
-
9:17 - 9:19So, is there a way of actually prevent
-
9:19 - 9:21future suffering?
-
9:25 - 9:30Yes, there is.
-
9:31 - 9:33Our past unwholesome Karma is like
-
9:33 - 9:36a drop of dirty water on the bottom
-
9:36 - 9:38of a big jar.
-
9:38 - 9:41It is there.
-
9:41 - 9:44We cannot change it.
-
9:44 - 9:47We cannot remove it.
-
9:47 - 9:50But we can add clean water.
-
9:51 - 9:56Drop by drop. Little by little.
-
9:56 - 10:00After some time, the jar will contain
-
10:00 - 10:06almost perfectly clear water again.
-
10:10 - 10:13Karma Drop by drop.
-
10:14 - 10:16Since we cannot get rid of our
-
10:16 - 10:21unwholesome Karma,
-
10:21 - 10:23we need to dilute
-
10:23 - 10:28and thereby neutralize it.
-
10:30 - 10:35Rather than creating new suffering again and again,
-
10:35 - 10:39we need to prevent suffering.
-
10:39 - 10:43Therefore, we need to replace our anger
-
10:43 - 10:48and greed with love and kindness.
-
10:48 - 10:54We need to be in control.
-
10:54 - 11:00By meditating we learn to be mindful.
-
11:00 - 11:03We learn to be in control of our actions,
-
11:03 - 11:06our thoughts and feelings.
-
11:08 - 11:10So, finally,
-
11:11 - 11:12we will be able to create
-
11:12 - 11:14less suffering
-
11:15 - 11:18for us and for others.
-
11:23 - 11:26Karma Control instead of suffering.
-
11:30 - 11:33Our Karma is the bond that ties us
-
11:33 - 11:37to past suffering
-
11:37 - 11:38and that will create
-
11:38 - 11:41future suffering too.
-
11:47 - 11:51If we want to be free, we need to cut
-
11:51 - 11:52this bond.
-
11:53 - 11:55We need to prevent the creation of
-
11:55 - 11:59new suffering.
-
11:59 - 12:03So our life can be better
-
12:03 - 12:05next week,
-
12:05 - 12:07next year,
-
12:07 - 12:11next life.
-
12:16 - 12:20Karma It is up to us
-
12:30 - 12:34Everything wholesome. Nothing unwholesome. A Pure mind.
-
12:35 - 12:40This is the past, present and future Buddhas' teaching.
