Job Interview Tips - Job Interview Questions and Answers
-
0:04 - 0:05>> Hi, there.
-
0:05 - 0:07I'm Denise Richardson and this is
Howdini.com. -
0:07 - 0:11If you want to learn how to ace a job
interview, stay tuned. -
0:11 - 0:15We're about to talk about it with Maggie
Mistal, who's a life purpose and -
0:15 - 0:20career coach, who can be heard regularly
on Martha Stewart Living Radio on Sirius. -
0:20 - 0:21Thank you so much for being with us.
-
0:21 - 0:22>> Thanks, Denise.
-
0:22 - 0:23>> You show up.
-
0:23 - 0:25You dressed properly.
-
0:25 - 0:27You walk into the inter, to meet the
interviewer. -
0:27 - 0:29What's the first thing you do when you
walk in? -
0:29 - 0:30>> I love to smile.
-
0:30 - 0:32And obviously, I think you can tell by
that. -
0:32 - 0:36But I like to make the interviewer just as
at ease as I'm trying to be. -
0:36 - 0:39Because really, this interview is a
conversation that you're gonna -
0:39 - 0:42have with this other person who is a human
being. -
0:42 - 0:45And it can be a real ice breaker if you
can just be relaxed. -
0:45 - 0:46And at least give yourself a break.
-
0:46 - 0:47Say, hi, how are you?
-
0:47 - 0:51And, and even try to talk about the
weather or some type of other ice breaker -
0:51 - 0:53that kinda gives everybody a chance to
take -
0:53 - 0:56a deep breath, because this is an
evaluative conversation, -
0:56 - 0:58and it can be nerve-wracking for both
parties. -
0:58 - 1:00>> So, the interviewer says to that
prospective -
1:00 - 1:03employee, why do you wanna leave your job?
-
1:03 - 1:06>> Yes.
That's always a great question, isn't it? -
1:06 - 1:08And you have to be prepared for those key
questions. -
1:08 - 1:10Especially, why are you moving on?
-
1:10 - 1:13Now, if you're moving on because you can't
stand your boss- -
1:13 - 1:14>> [LAUGH].
>> Right? -
1:14 - 1:16Which happens a lot, and we've all been
there. -
1:16 - 1:17You don't want to say that.
-
1:17 - 1:20What you do want to say is, that I really
need to be in a -
1:20 - 1:22place where I can be managed and developed
-
1:22 - 1:24and, where I can get guidance or
mentoring. -
1:24 - 1:27You really focus on the things that you're
looking to get, -
1:27 - 1:30as opposed to all the reasons why you
don't have it now. -
1:30 - 1:33>> Now, there are some people who walk
into that interview, and they -
1:33 - 1:37walk in a little defensively and they,
because they really need a job. -
1:37 - 1:41And they hear the words, you're
overqualified and they're willing -
1:41 - 1:44to take a job and do their best at it.
-
1:44 - 1:46How do you handle 'you're overqualified'?
-
1:46 - 1:47>> You can say things like, well,
-
1:47 - 1:50I've, you know, I've really thought about
that, and if -
1:50 - 1:53I were in your shoes, I'd be asking the
same question. -
1:53 - 1:56And when I think about it, I can tell you
for a fact, I'm looking to -
1:56 - 1:59downshift, and I know this industry well
and I, I don't need to be in charge. -
1:59 - 2:02I've been, I've been the person on the
totem, -
2:02 - 2:04totem pole before, and I can do that
again. -
2:04 - 2:06I'm really looking for a place where I can
contribute, but -
2:06 - 2:09where I don't have to be the one who's
running the show. -
2:09 - 2:11And really address those concerns, which
-
2:11 - 2:13were, which are behind the overqualified
comment. -
2:13 - 2:17>> And, and they may say the, you just
don't have enough experience for us. -
2:17 - 2:21>> But for folks just starting out maybe a
new career or, or college students who -
2:21 - 2:25just graduated, or even folks out of high
school who are new to the work world, -
2:25 - 2:26that's a common problem.
-
2:26 - 2:28So again, I go back to internships are
great, any way -
2:28 - 2:32that you can get some experience on your
resume to demonstrate, -
2:32 - 2:33hey, yeah.
-
2:33 - 2:36I may not be, you know, ten years in this
field, but I can tell you in this, -
2:36 - 2:39this experience that I had this summer, I
didn't -
2:39 - 2:42know anything going in, and here's how
successful I was. -
2:42 - 2:45You wanna show situations where, yeah, you
went in without -
2:45 - 2:48a lot of experience, but were still able
to succeed. -
2:48 - 2:50And this is where references can be so
helpful, as well. -
2:50 - 2:52Even if you don't have a lot of
-
2:52 - 2:54experience, anybody can be a great
reference for you. -
2:54 - 2:59Even a teacher, or a professor, or even
someone that you volunteered for, who can -
2:59 - 3:03attest to your ability to learn quickly
and perform well, can be a great asset. -
3:03 - 3:06>> We really like you, how much money are
you looking for? -
3:06 - 3:08>> Oh.
>> It's such a trick question. -
3:08 - 3:11>> It is. And for that question you
definitely wanna do your homework. -
3:11 - 3:14This is one of the best uses for the
internet. -
3:14 - 3:18Salary.com, indeed.com, monster, hotjobs,
a lot of -
3:18 - 3:20them have salary calculators associated
with them now. -
3:20 - 3:22So you can look up the job title
-
3:22 - 3:26in your geographic area and get the range
of salaries for that -
3:26 - 3:30position, and find where you would fit
based on your level of experience. -
3:30 - 3:32>> Briefly, if, if I, if the interviewer
-
3:32 - 3:35hasn't brought up the word salary, should
you? -
3:35 - 3:36>> Not right away.
-
3:36 - 3:39In, in the initial conversation, you wanna
get to know whether or -
3:39 - 3:42not this job even is a good fit. And I
always tell people, -
3:42 - 3:44become the superstar to this person,
first. -
3:44 - 3:46And then, you're in a much better place to
negotiate salary. -
3:46 - 3:49And they may even pay more for you because
they're -
3:49 - 3:51like, wow, we can't let Denise go, she's
such a -
3:51 - 3:54fabulous candidate, we were only gonna pay
this much, but -
3:54 - 3:56now that we've found Denise, we're willing
to do more. -
3:56 - 3:58>> Health care, flex time, vacation time.
-
3:58 - 4:01These are issues you should bring up
during a, a first -
4:01 - 4:04interview or do you wait for, come back
and meet Mr. Smith? -
4:04 - 4:06>> Right. Come--
Wait, wait for the come back. -
4:06 - 4:09Because again, first interviews should be
about, is this a company -
4:09 - 4:12I can picture myself in and vice versa for
the interviewer. -
4:12 - 4:14And if it is a place you can see yourself
-
4:14 - 4:16in, do the, do, you know, really be your
best self. -
4:16 - 4:19And really let them know why you'd be a
fantastic fit. -
4:19 - 4:21>> Well, we're certainly happy to have you
with us. -
4:21 - 4:23Thank you so much, Maggie Mistal.
-
4:23 - 4:24>> You're welcome.
