Job Interview Tips - Job Interview Questions and Answers

  • 0:04 - 0:05
    >> Hi, there.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
I'm Denise Richardson and this is
    Howdini.com.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
If you want to learn how to ace a job
    interview, stay tuned.
  • 0:11 - 0:15
We're about to talk about it with Maggie
Mistal, who's a life purpose and
  • 0:15 - 0:20
career coach, who can be heard regularly
on Martha Stewart Living Radio on Sirius.
  • 0:20 - 0:21
Thank you so much for being with us.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    >> Thanks, Denise.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    >> You show up.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    You dressed properly.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
You walk into the inter, to meet the
    interviewer.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
What's the first thing you do when you
    walk in?
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    >> I love to smile.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
And obviously, I think you can tell by
    that.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
But I like to make the interviewer just as
at ease as I'm trying to be.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
Because really, this interview is a
    conversation that you're gonna
  • 0:39 - 0:42
have with this other person who is a human
    being.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
And it can be a real ice breaker if you
    can just be relaxed.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
And at least give yourself a break.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    Say, hi, how are you?
  • 0:47 - 0:51
And, and even try to talk about the
weather or some type of other ice breaker
  • 0:51 - 0:53
that kinda gives everybody a chance to
    take
  • 0:53 - 0:56
a deep breath, because this is an
    evaluative conversation,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
and it can be nerve-wracking for both
    parties.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    >> So, the interviewer says to that
    prospective
  • 1:00 - 1:03
employee, why do you wanna leave your job?
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    >> Yes.
    That's always a great question, isn't it?
  • 1:06 - 1:08
And you have to be prepared for those key
    questions.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
Especially, why are you moving on?
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Now, if you're moving on because you can't
    stand your boss-
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    >> [LAUGH].
    >> Right?
  • 1:14 - 1:16
Which happens a lot, and we've all been
    there.
  • 1:16 - 1:17
You don't want to say that.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
What you do want to say is, that I really
    need to be in a
  • 1:20 - 1:22
place where I can be managed and developed
  • 1:22 - 1:24
and, where I can get guidance or
    mentoring.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
You really focus on the things that you're
    looking to get,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
as opposed to all the reasons why you
    don't have it now.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    >> Now, there are some people who walk
    into that interview, and they
  • 1:33 - 1:37
walk in a little defensively and they,
because they really need a job.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
And they hear the words, you're
    overqualified and they're willing
  • 1:41 - 1:44
to take a job and do their best at it.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
How do you handle 'you're overqualified'?
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    >> You can say things like, well,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
I've, you know, I've really thought about
    that, and if
  • 1:50 - 1:53
I were in your shoes, I'd be asking the
    same question.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
And when I think about it, I can tell you
for a fact, I'm looking to
  • 1:56 - 1:59
downshift, and I know this industry well
and I, I don't need to be in charge.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
I've been, I've been the person on the
    totem,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
totem pole before, and I can do that
    again.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
I'm really looking for a place where I can
    contribute, but
  • 2:06 - 2:09
where I don't have to be the one who's
    running the show.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
And really address those concerns, which
  • 2:11 - 2:13
were, which are behind the overqualified
    comment.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    >> And, and they may say the, you just
don't have enough experience for us.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    >> But for folks just starting out maybe a
new career or, or college students who
  • 2:21 - 2:25
just graduated, or even folks out of high
school who are new to the work world,
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    that's a common problem.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
So again, I go back to internships are
    great, any way
  • 2:28 - 2:32
that you can get some experience on your
    resume to demonstrate,
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    hey, yeah.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
I may not be, you know, ten years in this
field, but I can tell you in this,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
this experience that I had this summer, I
    didn't
  • 2:39 - 2:42
know anything going in, and here's how
    successful I was.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
You wanna show situations where, yeah, you
    went in without
  • 2:45 - 2:48
a lot of experience, but were still able
    to succeed.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
And this is where references can be so
    helpful, as well.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
Even if you don't have a lot of
  • 2:52 - 2:54
experience, anybody can be a great
    reference for you.
  • 2:54 - 2:59
Even a teacher, or a professor, or even
someone that you volunteered for, who can
  • 2:59 - 3:03
attest to your ability to learn quickly
and perform well, can be a great asset.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    >> We really like you, how much money are
    you looking for?
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    >> Oh.
    >> It's such a trick question.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    >> It is. And for that question you
    definitely wanna do your homework.
  • 3:11 - 3:14
This is one of the best uses for the
    internet.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    Salary.com, indeed.com, monster, hotjobs,
    a lot of
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    them have salary calculators associated
    with them now.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
So you can look up the job title
  • 3:22 - 3:26
in your geographic area and get the range
    of salaries for that
  • 3:26 - 3:30
position, and find where you would fit
based on your level of experience.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    >> Briefly, if, if I, if the interviewer
  • 3:32 - 3:35
hasn't brought up the word salary, should
    you?
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    >> Not right away.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
In, in the initial conversation, you wanna
    get to know whether or
  • 3:39 - 3:42
not this job even is a good fit. And I
    always tell people,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
become the superstar to this person,
    first.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
And then, you're in a much better place to
    negotiate salary.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
And they may even pay more for you because
    they're
  • 3:49 - 3:51
like, wow, we can't let Denise go, she's
    such a
  • 3:51 - 3:54
fabulous candidate, we were only gonna pay
    this much, but
  • 3:54 - 3:56
now that we've found Denise, we're willing
    to do more.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    >> Health care, flex time, vacation time.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
These are issues you should bring up
    during a, a first
  • 4:01 - 4:04
interview or do you wait for, come back
    and meet Mr. Smith?
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    >> Right. Come--
Wait, wait for the come back.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
Because again, first interviews should be
    about, is this a company
  • 4:09 - 4:12
I can picture myself in and vice versa for
    the interviewer.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
And if it is a place you can see yourself
  • 4:14 - 4:16
in, do the, do, you know, really be your
    best self.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
And really let them know why you'd be a
    fantastic fit.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    >> Well, we're certainly happy to have you
    with us.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
Thank you so much, Maggie Mistal.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    >> You're welcome.
