What is poverty costing us in BC?

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    [piano music...]
  • 0:06 - 0:08
A lot of people think poverty is a problem
  • 0:08 - 0:11
for other people in other neighbourhoods.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
But even if you, or no one you know
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    is ever affected by poverty,
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    not doing anything about poverty
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    is costing us all.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    It's costing money.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
More and more money, every single year.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
British Columbia has the highest poverty rate in Canada.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
Not addressing this comes with a price.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
And this is what it looks like
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    when we do the math:
  • 0:37 - 0:41
For starters, it costs us one point two billion dollars per year
  • 0:41 - 0:45
to pay for the healthcare costs related to poverty.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
That's because poverty is literally bad for your physical and mental health.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
You're more likely to live in
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    poor quality or unsafe housing,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    or none at all.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
You're more likely to go hungry,
  • 0:58 - 1:00
have a job that exposes you to hazards,
  • 1:00 - 1:04
or end up with preventable health conditions.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    We've heard a lot lately
  • 1:05 - 1:08
about how we need to get "tough on crime",
  • 1:08 - 1:12
but some crime could be prevented by reducing poverty,
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    which is linked to
  • 1:13 - 1:18
crimes of desperation, low literacy rates, and living in unsafe situations.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
The poverty related costs of crime in BC
  • 1:20 - 1:26
add up to $745million per year.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
Then, there's the income that the poor might have earned from working,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
if they had access to better supports and training.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
Or the income that the working poor could have earned
  • 1:36 - 1:40
if their jobs paid better wages.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
This is also a loss to our economy
  • 1:42 - 1:45
to the collective wealth of our society.
  • 1:45 - 1:51
And it adds up to as much as 7 point 3 billion dollars per year.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
So that's what it's costing us
  • 1:53 - 1:54
to stick with the status quo
  • 1:54 - 1:59
of keeping one in nine British Columbians in poverty.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
All together, it works out to between
  • 2:01 - 2:05
8 and 9 billion dollars every year.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    This is a terrible deal.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
And the worst part of this
  • 2:09 - 2:11
is that it would cost us
  • 2:11 - 2:13
between 3 and 4 billion dollars per year
  • 2:13 - 2:17
to put an effective, poverty reduction plan in place.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
That's less than half of what poverty is costing us now.
  • 2:22 - 2:23
You don't have to be an economist
  • 2:23 - 2:27
to see that it costs more to keep people in poverty
  • 2:27 - 2:30
than it does to fix the problem.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    It's just simple math.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Not for other people
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    in other neighbourhoods,
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    but for all of us.
