הרב זמיר כהן - משמעות מגן הדוד Rabbi Zamir Cohen- The meaning of the Shield (Star) of David

  • 0:00 - 0:09
    The Shield of David
  • 0:09 - 0:15
Rabbi Zamir Cohen,Shlita The Shield of David
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    There is a tradition
  • 0:17 - 0:19
that when King David would go out to war
  • 0:19 - 0:21
he would go out with a shield
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    that had a drawing on it comprised of two triangles;
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    one upright and one upside-down,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    superimposed one on the other,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
and therefore, this diagram was known as the Shield of David.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    What does it symbolize?
  • 0:30 - 0:33
There are many secrets contained in the Shield of David.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    On a more simple level,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
the triangle and upside-down triangle represents
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    male and female,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
two opposites that create perfect harmony.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
According to Judaism, the entire creation
  • 0:44 - 0:46
is based on the principle of naturally occurring opposites-
  • 0:46 - 0:48
two opposites that create one complete whole.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
An unmarried man and an unmarried woman
  • 0:50 - 0:52
they are still only considered half a person.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    When they get married
  • 0:54 - 0:56
they turn into a complete person.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
"Male and female He created them ...
  • 0:57 - 0:58
... and He blessed them ...
  • 0:58 - 0:59
... and He called their name ADAM (=mankind)."
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    That is to say
  • 1:00 - 1:02
the entire creation is based on the idea
  • 1:02 - 1:04
that I am only a half.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    The second half is needed
  • 1:05 - 1:07
in order to complete myself and become whole.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    However, on a deeper level
  • 1:09 - 1:09
    these two triangles,
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    when they interjoin,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    form six spaces
  • 1:13 - 1:15
small triangles that appear around the edges,
  • 1:15 - 1:19
and one center space which is hexagonal,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
and all the six surrounding triangles are inter-connected to it.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    The Maharal from Prague,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    one of the great Kabbalists,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    wrote that the number six
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    expresses the aspect of materiality.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
Every physical object is confined to six sides:
  • 1:30 - 1:34
East, West, North, South, above and below.
  • 1:34 - 1:35
On the other hand, the aspect of the number seven
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    corresponds to the inner dimension.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
The spirituality that exists within the physical,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
like the electrons that are within the atom,
  • 1:42 - 1:44
is the spirituality that gives life to the physical.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
Like the soul within the body,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
the seventh dimension that gives life to the body.
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    And this is the reason
  • 1:50 - 1:53
that Judaism is saturated by the number seven.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
The seventh day is The Sabbath,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
the seventh year is The Sabbatical Year,
  • 1:56 - 1:58
the Festivals are seven days long,
  • 1:58 - 1:59
a bride and groom rejoice for seven days of blessings,
  • 1:59 - 2:01
so, too, there are seven days of mourning,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
family purity requires waiting seven days,
  • 2:03 - 2:04
there are seven branches on the Menorah,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
A man winds the strap of tefillin (phylacteries) seven times around his arm,
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    and so on.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
There are many more "sevens" in Judaism.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    Why is this so?
  • 2:11 - 2:14
It's due to the the seventh dimension in nature
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    which is what gives life.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
It is the inner spirituality that gives existence
  • 2:18 - 2:20
to all of the surrounding physicality.
  • 2:20 - 2:21
And this is the reason, in anticipation of the Sabbath, we say
  • 2:21 - 2:22
"Let us go to greet the Sabbath ...
  • 2:22 - 2:23
... for it is the source of all blessing."
  • 2:23 - 2:25
The Sabbath is actually in the center
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    with its influence affecting
  • 2:27 - 2:28
the three prior days of the week
  • 2:28 - 2:30
as well as the three following days.
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    And when a person works
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    six days of the week,
  • 2:32 - 2:34
he produces material, he earns money.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
However, the physical that lacks its soul,
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    that lacks spirituality,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    will not endure.
  • 2:38 - 2:39
A blessing in money is not
  • 2:39 - 2:41
what appears in your pay slip.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
Rather, that you should be able
  • 2:42 - 2:44
to enjoy all of your money.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
And the Sabbath which is the "source of all blessings",
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    explains the Maharal,
  • 2:46 - 2:47
means that observing the laws of the Sabbath
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    brings in the spiritual dimension
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    of the Seventh day
  • 2:50 - 2:51
into the other six days of the week.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
It puts the soul into the physical
  • 2:52 - 2:54
and then the physical can endure.
  • 2:54 - 2:55
Beyond this there is an even deeper level.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
The Shield of David is comprised of
  • 2:58 - 3:00
an upper line and a lower line.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    The upper line represents
  • 3:02 - 3:03
the spiritual world and the heavens,
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    while the lower line represents
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    this world.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
The nature of a person is
  • 3:08 - 3:08
that while he is in this world
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    in any endeavor that
  • 3:10 - 3:10
    relates to the physical,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    he initially has great aspirations
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    and he feels spaciousness.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
He advances, makes strides, and exerts himself.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    But the more he attains and reaches his aim, his goal;
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    his motivation decreases and dwindles
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    until it disappears.
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    On the other hand,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
in spiritual matters it is exactly the opposite.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
When you begin from a small point
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    you continually expand
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    and continually develop boundlessly!
  • 3:31 - 3:34
The wider part of the inverted triangle
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    widens infinitely
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    since the two angled lines
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    diverge forever.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    As opposed to
  • 3:41 - 3:44
the lower triangles which start off wide
  • 3:44 - 3:45
but end with the two lines meeting
  • 3:45 - 3:48
and ending at a fixed point.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
And the Kabbalist masters also teach us
  • 3:50 - 3:52
that when a person acts in this world,
  • 3:52 - 3:54
he also influences the higher worlds.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
And after impacting the higher worlds,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
the abundance goes down and returns into this world.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
This too is hinted at in the Shield of David.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
A person can act below in this world
  • 4:03 - 4:05
in either a positive or negative way,
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    as instructed by the Creator.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
(The word Torah comes from the word meaning instruction.)
  • 4:09 - 4:11
When he acts in a positive way,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
he generates abundance in the higher worlds.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
In other words, what a person does here,
  • 4:15 - 4:16
represented by the lower line, doesn't just remain below
  • 4:16 - 4:19
but ascends up and penetrates the higher worlds.
  • 4:19 - 4:20
And after his influence in the higher worlds,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
it then returns back down again
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    to influence this world
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    with goodness and blessing
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    in accordance with his deeds.
