  • 0:03 - 0:07
My name is Thois Wanma, I am from Papua.
    Papuan Voices, Sorong Region.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
My name is Immanuel. I am from
    Papuan Voices in Keerom.
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    What is Papuan Voices?
  • 0:15 - 0:19
Papuan Voices is a community of
    documentary film-makers in Papua
  • 0:19 - 0:26
Who feature the culture, social life,
environment, among other issues in Papua.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    Papuan Voices usually produces
    short documentary films.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    What issues are being raised
    by the community?
  • 0:32 - 0:37
    Our films discuss issues like
    local economy and women's rights
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    among others.
  • 0:41 - 0:47
Our films feature our existing struggles
  • 0:47 - 0:51
Which can be informative to other
    Papuans across the regions.
  • 0:51 - 0:59
For example, making films on Merauke
can be informative to friends in Sorong.
  • 0:59 - 1:05
    Because most Papuans don't know
what's happening in the other districts.
  • 1:05 - 1:13
It can tell how people in Sorong
    address environmental issues
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    or, that a large-scale plantation
    investment in Merauke has started.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
Watching the films, at least people
in Sorong or Manokwari would know
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    Tell me about the other
    initiatives of PV.
  • 1:24 - 1:32
We screen the produced films on campuses
    usually in dormitories in Jayapura
  • 1:32 - 1:38
    Papuan Voices communities in other
regions also have screenings & discussions
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    That's what Papuan Voices does.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
How about the social conditions in Papua?
  • 1:44 - 1:51
We do talk about the conditions in Papua.
    There are numerous problems.
  • 1:51 - 1:58
Such as livelihood & women's rights
This year, there are new challenges
  • 1:58 - 2:05
Through PV films, these problems are
featured and discussed among the audience
  • 2:05 - 2:09
Our films are produced to discuss,
    respond, and solve these issues.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    There are bigger issues
    in our society
  • 2:13 - 2:19
For one, there are large investments
on oil palm plantations coming in
  • 2:19 - 2:24
The native people in the area do not know
What a palm oil company is & what it does
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    What usually are the problems
    faced by the PV Community?
  • 2:26 - 2:31
    The use of other languages
    affects film production.
  • 2:31 - 2:36
For example, the film I made in Mayalibit
Bay featuring the native tribe of Maya.
  • 2:36 - 2:41
    During filming, they spoke
    in their native language.
  • 2:41 - 2:47
So we faced difficulties in shooting
    and editing.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    Because I did not understand
    what they were talking about.
  • 2:50 - 2:55
So, we had to find people to translate it
    into Indonesian and English.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
I also traveled from the Keerom Regency
and that was a long journey.
  • 2:58 - 3:06
Shorter distances can also be longer,
    and local transport is expensive.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
Why are you interested in Papuan Voices?
  • 3:08 - 3:15
I am interested in PV because of
my concerns for my fellow Papuans.
  • 3:15 - 3:21
Papua is still lagging behind, so I want to
share stories with people outside the region
  • 3:21 - 3:29
Who think that Papua is rich in gold and
other minerals. It is not like that.
  • 3:29 - 3:33
When I went to see by myself, Papuans were
still left behind, with many problems.
  • 3:33 - 3:38
    That made me feel sad,
That's why I want to tell other people
  • 3:38 - 3:46
That Papua does not need anything from
the government, except love and care.
  • 3:46 - 3:58
I am interested in PV because I think
I know how to solve these problems
  • 3:58 - 4:02
problems that persisted for long; and as
a young Papuan, I want to do what I can.
  • 4:02 - 4:10
So when EngageMedia started the training
to help set up PV, it really helped me, too.
  • 4:10 - 4:16
We produce films with a purpose,
to be watched and understood by people.
