StreetFilms-Portland: Bicycle Boulevards
-
0:09 - 0:11thi is SouthEast Lincoln that we are standing on here
-
0:11 - 0:16and the Southeast Lincoln Bike Boulevard is really cool
-
0:16 - 0:21because it's like a metaphore for all that what we've done in Portland in the eighties.
-
0:21 - 0:24South East Lincoln here was we called called a traffic collector
-
0:24 - 0:26There was quite a bit of auto traffic on the street
-
0:26 - 0:28and it was a major ? affair
-
0:28 - 0:30and in the late eighties and early nineties
-
0:30 - 0:34the city really with pressure from neighborhood and citizens
-
0:34 - 0:40turns this street as well as a number of other streets into what we call bicycle boulevards
-
0:40 - 0:42where we did traffic coming? elements to make
-
0:42 - 0:44the street more livable
-
0:44 - 0:48and slower traffic, reduced traffic,
-
0:48 - 0:51and much more friendly for bicycles and pedestrians.
-
0:51 - 0:53So let me tell you what we did to the street
-
0:53 - 0:58at a couple of key points on the street, at Southeast 39, two blocks this way
-
0:58 - 1:02and South East 20, which is about a mile that away
-
1:02 - 1:04we put in what we call traffic divertors
-
1:04 - 1:06and so traffic as to turn.
-
1:06 - 1:09One of the biggest challenges to develop a bike boulevard
-
1:09 - 1:15is you can't make it easy for cars to get onto the bike boulevard out of a busy street.
-
1:15 - 1:17If you fail to make this kind of improvement,
-
1:17 - 1:20what will happen is that you will have a lot of more cars on the bike boulevard.
-
1:20 - 1:23We don't want a lot of car on our bike boulevard.
-
1:23 - 1:25So we do this little dislocation
-
1:25 - 1:28is only allow car to come out of the local service street on the 39
-
1:28 - 1:33but we don't allow cars to come in from 39 onto Clinton
-
1:33 - 1:35In this case, the project has worked really well.
-
1:35 - 1:39It's made so that bicyclists can pass through easily
-
1:39 - 1:43but it keeps cars off and actually acts as a good treatment
-
1:43 - 1:46and diverts cars that would otherwise be on this facilities.
-
1:46 - 1:49We also put in things that slow traffic down,
-
1:49 - 1:53which includes the traffic circle that you can see over there
-
1:53 - 1:56and speed bumps along the street to slow traffic down
-
1:56 - 2:01so that the speed of cars is prety similar to the speed of cyclists
-
2:01 - 2:04which create a more confortable environment for everyone
-
2:04 - 2:10and then more recently we put in signs and circles to identify the street
-
2:10 - 2:14as well as other a Bike Boulevards, has been part of this special Boulevard Network.
-
2:21 - 2:25People are very concerned about diverting traffic off from a street.
-
2:25 - 2:27"How they gonna get to there houses?"
-
2:27 - 2:30And that "it might cause traffic on other streets to go out".
-
2:30 - 2:32So, and this was what happened here,
-
2:32 - 2:34there was a lot of fights, it was a difficult project,
-
2:34 - 2:38and what happen as a result is also very similar to what hapens in many other cities,
-
2:38 - 2:42and that it's so pleasant afterwards that properties values stear? up?
-
2:42 - 2:45are becomes wonderfull terfair?? for people walking their dog and jogging
-
2:45 - 2:47it's "very" part of the street
-
2:47 - 2:51for bicycling, for people walking, for kids to be out of the bounds.
-
2:51 - 2:54and it's just become this wonderfull community street.
