-
0:03 - 0:09How do you let people know that you'd want them to re-use your own work ?
-
0:09 - 0:13Creative Commons licenses can help you do both. We'll show you how.
-

-
0:24 - 0:27Information and content can fly between us in exciting new ways.
-
0:27 - 0:33But it's important to know that when something is created, say a photo or a document, or a music track
-
0:33 - 0:37it's automatically protected by copyright.
-
0:37 - 0:41Copyright enables people to say who can share and re-use their creations.
-
0:41 - 0:48You must always obtain someone's permission before sharing or re-using their work even when it's posted online.
-
0:48 - 0:55But what if a creator wants everyone to use his work without the hassle of granting permission over and over.
-
0:55 - 0:58This is where Creative Commons can help.
-
0:58 - 1:03Creative Commons provide licensing tools that are free to use.
-
1:03 - 1:07You can applied a license to your work, which refines your copyright
-
1:07 - 1:10and streamlines how you give permissions.
-
1:10 - 1:16Zack here downloads the photo called CC-Kiwi that he wants to use in his science project.
-
1:16 - 1:22He can do this without asking Kiri, the photographer, first, because she's already given permission
-
1:22 - 1:24with a Creative Commons license.
-
1:24 - 1:28Kiri's license is legally robust, but easy for Zack to understand.
-
1:28 - 1:36She's told the word, including Zack, that they can use CC-Kiwi as long as they acknowledge her as the original photographer.
-
1:36 - 1:40They are more rules Kiri could have included.
-
1:40 - 1:44Creative Commons license is made up of license elements. You can think them as rules.
-
1:44 - 1:47And each have its own special symbol.
-
1:47 - 1:52This is attribution. It means that Zack must acknowledge Kiri
-
1:52 - 1:54when he publishes his science project containing her photo.
-
1:54 - 2:02This is non-commercial. It's means no one else but Kiri is permitted to make money from CC-Kiwi.
-
2:02 - 2:07Tim wants to print the photo onto tee-shirts and distribute them to friends.
-
2:07 - 2:11He can do this, but he must not sell them.
-
2:11 - 2:17This is no-derivative. And it means that Kiri has not given permission to change her photo.
-
2:17 - 2:25Kate can use CC-Kiwi on her design blog, but will need to ask Kiri before retouching or mixing up the image.
-
2:25 - 2:34And this is share alike. It means that new creations that use CC-Kiwi need to carry the same license.
-
2:34 - 2:39Jack incorporates his own remix of CC-Kiwi in his video installation
-
2:39 - 2:43But he must share the work under the same term that Kiri has.
-
2:43 - 2:49Each Creative Commons license gives permission to share and include the attribution rule.
-
2:49 - 2:54So people who finds your Creative Commons work are automatically allowed to share it
-
2:54 - 2:57but are required to acknowledge you if they do.
-
2:57 - 3:03The other tree license elements are optional and you can choose witch one to add, if any.
-
3:03 - 3:07Here are the six combinations that make up Creative Commons licenses.
-
3:07 - 3:13The differences between them is how many rules applied when someone which use your work
-
3:13 - 3:21The attribution license allows most freedom, and the attribution non-commercial no-derivative license
-

-
3:27 - 3:33are sometimes refers to as free cultural works approved licenses.
-
3:33 - 3:37These tree licenses restricted commercial use of the work.
