Hal (and Kerri) Grade Your Bike Locking

  • 0:07 - 0:11
You were so close to getting fouled up.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
That can be easily taken off.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
What does the first lock look like?
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    That probably doesn't work either.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    I'm Howard. I'm Carrie Martin.
  • 0:22 - 0:37
And like around five years ago, we made a video about how to lock your bike. And we graded people on their locking jobs. And we want to see if people have learned anything from now and five years ago.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
My gut feeling is that the chunk is as stupid as ever. And I have a lot of experience working in recycle bicycle. We seen a lot of bike thefts and we've heard every story.
  • 0:40 - 0:50
So you ready? Let's go rate some bikes. Let's find some bikes.
  • 0:50 - 1:02
Let's see what we have here. Look at this bike. Looks like we have a frame and the rear wheel and the front wheel locked and the seat. Wow!
  • 1:02 - 1:16
The clamp here. Very nice. Now keep people honest. To keep the quick release from opening with somebod having to get a screwdriver or 8mm wrench to puch the hose clamp up.
  • 1:16 - 1:21
And that's a square lock and you can't get a bolt cutter on. Found a long enough pole.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
The pole's in ground quite securely.
  • 1:25 - 1:31
I would say this is an A. I mean they can't really get away with this bike or any of the parts.
  • 1:31 - 1:40
This is pretty good. The bike seems secure. The thing is, when it's locked like this you can't ride it away. Except for one little problem.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
You got one little problem here.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
I don't know what that problem is? You know what that problem is?
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    I would give this bike a C.
  • 1:48 - 1:53
This is $50 at minimum. This is a terrible and really good lock.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
Why didn't they lock the front wheel?
  • 1:55 - 1:58
They have no point in leaving slack in this chain.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
Might as well go around the front wheel or the back wheel if it's closest.
  • 2:01 - 2:10
They still come by and say you're the tv lock up guy.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
I give this guy a grade on his lock.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
They bring it out in to the street and have you look at it?
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    There we have the target.
  • 2:16 - 2:20
Oh, ah.... Look at this. They meant well.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
They got the best lock you can buy.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
The seat is locked, but duh...
  • 2:25 - 2:29
The problem here is I think people themselves don't know how to take a rear wheel off.
  • 2:29 - 2:36
They think it's all complicated and all those pesky gears and everything in the back so they think, "oh the bike thief isn't going to take it off either."
  • 2:36 - 2:41
But, we're dealing with professionals here. And it basically going to cost you $120.
  • 2:41 - 2:45
Might as well buy yourself another Huffy from KMART that cost $99.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    This guy's an F.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
Now this is cute. This is just art right?
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    Or is this actually just...
  • 2:55 - 2:59
The front wheel is locked. The rear wheel is locked. And the fender is locked.
  • 2:59 - 3:09
I give it an A because the bike is so crappy and it literally has bird crap on it. This bike could be here forever.
  • 3:09 - 3:16
Wow we got two bikes over here. Anybody with a two foot bolt cutter could easily cut this chain.
  • 3:16 - 3:22
Somebody didn't want to buy a Kyrptonite lock. So they went to the hardware store and they tried to do their own thing.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
They bought the crap night lock.
  • 3:25 - 3:30
Notice the rear wheel. They think it is secure. But theives have a 5 mm allan wrench.
  • 3:30 - 3:34
You could steal this rear wheel withing two seconds.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
You could steal this the seat also with the same wrench.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
And that seat too. That's a nice seat.
  • 3:39 - 3:43
I think both these people gt left back in seventh grade together.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
Because you bolt your bike with the worst lock you can buy.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
You can break this lock so easily.
  • 3:49 - 3:56
Just take a 2X4 and wedge it up in here and you could pop this in a matter of ive seconds.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
    We're giving these peope a group D.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    Oh, they got these things.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
These are your antitheft locking skewers.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
Those need a hammer and chisel to break.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
He or she has it on the front wheel and the bakc wheel and also on the (double locks) chain.
  • 4:13 - 4:21
This person has had a bike stolen in the past and wanted this nice kona and did everything they could to make it theft proof.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
I think we have to give this guy a little credit.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
I'm going to give him an A-.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
Oh look how cute it is.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
When you're 8. This is the lock that you got from your parents.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
I could probably chew through this. I just want to steal it to get the lock.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    It's so cute.
  • 4:40 - 4:45
    The eyes are watching you.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
C cause this is such a bad bike.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    This bike gets a B.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    We'll give this one an A, C, and a C.
  • 4:52 - 4:57
He only locked his front tire. So, they got the rest of the bike.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    This is an A.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
These locks. Rear wheel locked to the frame.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
The only thing is they could cut down the tree.
  • 5:05 - 5:09
Kinda like you wouldn't do that.
  • 5:09 - 5:15
He has a $300 rear wheel that's not locked up. He gets like a D.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
Nobbody's going to steal this thing.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    She's probably a grandmother now.
  • 5:22 - 5:28
She's 10 when she locked the bike up.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
do you think things have improved over the past five years?
  • 5:30 - 5:32
Do you think people have learned how to lock up their bike?
  • 5:32 - 5:35
They're getting smarter. You get stuff stolen.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
You realize that you don't want that to happen again.
  • 5:38 - 5:42
    And they're learning stuff.
