Why Obama Now
-
0:05 - 0:10In this country, broad-based prosperity
has never trickled down -
0:10 - 0:12from the success of a wealthy few.
-
0:12 - 0:16It has always come from the success of a
strong and growing middle class. -
0:16 - 0:20That's how a generation who went to college
on the G.I. Bill, including my grandfather, -
0:20 - 0:23helped build the most prosperous economy
-
0:23 - 0:25the world has ever known.
-
0:25 - 0:30That's why a CEO like Henry Ford
made it his mission to pay his workers enough -
0:30 - 0:33so they could buy the cars but they made.
-
0:33 - 0:35And yet for much of the last century,
-
0:35 - 0:40we have been having the same argument
with folks who keeps peddling some version -
0:40 - 0:44of trickle-down economics.
-
0:44 - 0:48They keep telling us that if we'd convert
more of our investments in education -
0:48 - 0:51and research and health care into tax cuts,
-
0:51 - 0:53especially for the wealthy,
-
0:53 - 0:56our economy will grow stronger.
-
0:56 - 0:58Now the problem for advocates of this theory
-
0:58 - 1:00is that we've tried their approach.
-
1:00 - 1:02At the beginning of the last decade,
-
1:02 - 1:07the wealthiest Americans received a huge tax cut in 2001
-
1:07 - 1:10and another huge tax cut in two 2003.
-
1:10 - 1:15We were promised that these tax cuts
would lead to faster job growth. -
1:15 - 1:16They did not.
-
1:16 - 1:18The wealthy got wealthier,
-
1:18 - 1:21but prosperity sure didn't trickle down.
-
1:21 - 1:27Instead, during the last decade we had
the slowest job growth in half a century. -
1:27 - 1:28It was a period when
-
1:28 - 1:29insurance companies
-
1:29 - 1:32and mortgage lenders and financial institutions
-
1:32 - 1:35didn't have to abide by strong enough regulations.
-
1:35 - 1:37And what was the result:
-
1:37 - 1:39Profits for many of these companies soared.
-
1:39 - 1:42But so did people's health insurance premiums.
-
1:42 - 1:46Patients were routinely denied care,
often when they needed it most. -
1:46 - 1:50Families were enticed and sometimes just
plain tricked -
1:50 - 1:52into buying homes they couldn't afford.
-
1:52 - 1:55Huge, reckless bets were made with other
people's money on the line. -
1:55 - 1:57And our entire financial system
-
1:57 - 1:59was nearly destroyed.
-
1:59 - 2:01So we tried this theory out.
-
2:01 - 2:05And you would think that after the
results of this experiment, -
2:05 - 2:08that the proponents of this theory might show some humility.
-
2:08 - 2:12You'd think they'd say "You know what?
Maybe some rules and regulations -
2:12 - 2:14are necessary to protect the economy.
-
2:14 - 2:18Maybe just maybe, at a time of growing debt
and widening inequality, -
2:18 - 2:24we should hold off on giving the wealthiest Americans
another round of big tax cuts. -
2:24 - 2:27But that's exactly the opposite of what they've done.
-
2:27 - 2:30Instead of moderating their views even slightly,
-
2:30 - 2:35the republicans running congress right now have doubled down.
-
2:35 - 2:38This is what the rolling on!
-
2:38 - 2:40This larger debate that we'll be having
-
2:40 - 2:42about the size and role of government;
-
2:42 - 2:45this debate has been with us since our
founding days. -
2:45 - 2:47But no matter what we argue,
-
2:47 - 2:48or where we stand,
-
2:48 - 2:52We have always held certain beliefs as Americans:
-
2:52 - 2:56We believe that in order to preserve our
own freedoms and pursue our own happiness, -
2:56 - 2:58we can't just think about ourselves.
-
2:58 - 3:02We have to think about the country that made
those liberties possible. -
3:02 - 3:06We have to think about our fellow citizens,
with whom we share a community. -
3:06 - 3:08We have to think about what's required
-
3:08 - 3:13to preserve the American dream for future generations.
-
3:13 - 3:15And if we keep that in mind,
-
3:15 - 3:18and uphold our obligations to one another
-
3:18 - 3:21and to this larger enterprise that is America,
-
3:21 - 3:25then I have no doubt that we will continue our
long and prosperous journey -
3:25 - 3:28as the greatest nation on Earth.
-
3:28 -Thank you, God bless you, God bless United States of America.
