The Feynman Series - Beauty

  • 0:21 - 0:24
I have a friend who is an artist, and has sometimes
  • 0:24 - 0:28
taken a view which I don't agree with very well.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
He'll hold up a flower and say "Look how beautiful it is"
  • 0:31 - 0:36
and I'll agree. And he says you see as an artist I can see how beautiful this is,
  • 0:36 - 0:43
but you as a scientist take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing. And I think that he's kind of nutty.
  • 0:43 - 0:49
First of all, the beauty that he sees is available to other people and to me too, I believe, although
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    I may not be quite as refined aesthetically as he is;
  • 0:52 - 0:56
but I can appreciate the beauty of a flower.
  • 0:56 - 1:01
At the same time, I see much more about the flower than he sees. I could imagine the cells in there,
  • 1:01 - 1:05
the complicated actions inside, which also have a beauty.
  • 1:05 - 1:11
I mean, it's not just beauty at this dimension of one centimeter, there's also beauty at smaller dimensions.
  • 1:11 - 1:19
The inner structure, also the processes, the fact that the colors and the flower are evolved in order
  • 1:19 - 1:23
to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
It means that insects can see the color.
  • 1:26 - 1:33
It adds a question: does this aesthetic sense also exist in the lower forms that... why is it aesthetic...
  • 1:33 - 1:41
all kinds of interesting questions which with science, knowledge, only adds to the excitement,
  • 1:41 - 1:49
and mystery, and the awe of a flower. It only adds. I don't understand how it subtracts.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
If you expected science to give all the answers to the wonderful questions about what we are,
  • 1:55 - 2:01
where we are going, what the meaning of the universe is, and so on, then I think you could easily become
  • 2:01 - 2:07
disillusioned and look for some mystic answer to these problems. How a scientist can take a mystic answer,
  • 2:07 - 2:12
I don't know, the whole spirit is to understand... Well, never mind that, I mean I don't understand that.
  • 2:12 - 2:20
But anyhow, if you think of it, the way I think of what we're doing is that we are exploring, we're trying to find out
  • 2:20 - 2:22
as much as we can about the world.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
People say to me "Are you looking for the ultimate laws of physics?"
  • 2:26 - 2:31
No I'm not, I'm just looking to find out more about the world, and if it turns out there is a simple
  • 2:31 - 2:33
ultimate law that explains everything, so be it.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
That would be very nice to discover. If it turns out it's like an onion with millions of layers,
  • 2:37 - 2:41
and we're just sick and tired of looking at the layers, then that's the way it is.
  • 2:41 - 2:47
But whatever way it comes out, nature is there and she's going to come out the way she is.
  • 2:47 - 2:51
Therefore, when we go to investigate it, we shouldn't pre-decide what it is we're trying to do
  • 2:51 - 2:54
except to find out more about it.
  • 2:54 - 3:01
You see, one thing is: I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing.
  • 3:01 - 3:09
I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
I have approximate answers, and possible beliefs, and different degrees of certainty
  • 3:12 - 3:16
about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
and there are many things I don't know anything about.
  • 3:19 - 3:25
    But I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened by not knowing things;
  • 3:25 - 3:30
by being lost in the mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is
  • 3:30 - 3:35
as far as I can tell possible. It doesn't frighten me.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
And so altogether I can't believe the special stories
  • 3:38 - 3:48
that have been made up about our relationship to the universe at large because they seem to be
  • 3:48 - 3:56
too simple, too connected...too local, too provincial. The earth, he came to the earth!
  • 3:56 - 4:00
One of the aspects of god came to the Earth, mind you.
  • 4:00 - 4:08
And look at what's out there, it isn't in proportion.
  • 4:08 - 4:10
Anyway, it's no use arguing, I can't argue it. I'm just trying
  • 4:10 - 4:16
to tell you: with the scientific view, my father's view, that we should look to see what's true and what
  • 4:16 - 4:25
may not be true; once you start doubting, which to me is a very fundamental part of my soul, is to doubt,
  • 4:25 - 4:34
and to ask; when you doubt and ask, it gets a little harder to believe.
