Dutch junction design - safer for cyclists
-
0:01 - 0:08this junction design, explained in an other video was discussed a lot but little understood
-
0:08 - 0:14this is not experimental design, it has been used for decades in the netherlands
-
0:14 - 0:19. The most important feature of this design is this protective traffic island
-
0:19 - 0:22So let see what it looks like in reality
-
0:23 - 0:25it comes in many different sizes
-
0:25 - 0:27but the shape is always similar
-
0:27 - 0:31and so is the reason of its existence
-
0:31 - 0:36which is protecting cyclists from motorized traffic
-
0:38 - 0:41sometimes it is very large
-
0:46 - 0:49and sometimes it is very small
-
1:01 - 1:06it makes turning in the cycle path impossible for cars
-
1:16 - 1:21the swift to the right is not slowing cyclist down at all
-
1:30 - 1:36it founds(?) position of the cyclist make that they are gone before the car can make the turn
-
1:37 - 1:40even if they had green at the same time
-
1:45 - 1:47which mostly is not the case
-
1:49 - 1:52especially at larger junctions
-
1:53 - 1:58where turning car have a different green fase from the cyclists
-
2:26 - 2:30the fact that cyclists have to make a left turn on the outside of the junction
-
2:31 - 2:33is no problem either.
-
2:33 - 2:40The green fase from the second part of the turn is usually coordinated with the first part
-
2:40 - 2:44the second part can be made almost instantely after the first.
-
2:44 - 2:47They are no long waiting times
-
3:24 - 3:31the separated green fases are what make this type of junction's design safe
- Title:
- Dutch junction design - safer for cyclists
- Description:
-
The Dutch have been designing junctions with cycle paths for decades. There is nothing experimental about these junctions. They have proven to be safer for cyclists than junctions without such provisions.
