Women's Stories, Movies and the Oscars
-
0:08 - 0:12As you might have guessed, I watch a lot of movies, my favourites are science fiction
-
0:12 - 0:18but also action, dramas, and thrillers and I'll even admit the occasional romantic comedy.
-
0:18 - 0:22If you go to the movies a lot too you may have noticed something that the vast majority of these films
-
0:22 - 0:26have in common, most of the movies seem to be stories about men.
-
0:26 - 0:32One of the primary reasons Hollywood continually churns out films about men is because we live in a male centered society.
-
0:32 - 0:37Most simply, male centeredness is an aspect of patriarchy that shows us that we place and prioritize
-
0:37 - 0:43our attention on men, men's stories, the things men want to do and the things men don't do.
-
0:43 - 0:47As a result, the images we see in the media often focus on male-centered stories.
-
0:47 - 0:51One way to demonstrate male centeredness is not only to look at the films being made
-
0:51 - 0:54but which films are most celebrated and honoured.
-
0:54 - 0:58To do this, I looked up the films that won the Academy Award for best picture over the last 50 years.
-
0:58 - 1:01Let's see whose stories are being told?
-
1:01 - 1:05Starting in 2009 is The Hurt Locker which although directed by a woman is still all about men.
-
1:05 - 1:07Slumdog Millionaire - men
-
1:07 - 1:10No Country for Old Men - need I say more
-
1:10 - 1:12The Departed - is about men
-
1:12 - 1:14Crash - is an ensemble
-
1:14 - 1:18Million Dollar Baby - is interesting because it's pretty equally a story about a man and a woman.
-
1:18 - 1:20Lord of the Rings - men
-
1:20 - 1:22Chicago - is woman centered
-
1:22 - 1:24A Beautiful Mind - men
-
1:24 - 1:26Gladiator - is about a man who fights other men
-
1:26 - 1:27American Beauty - man
-
1:27 - 1:29Shakespeare in Love - man
-
1:29 - 1:32Titanic - is from a man's perspective
-
1:32 - 1:33The English Patient - man
-
1:33 - 1:34Braveheart - man
-
1:34 - 1:35Forrest Gump - man
-
1:35 - 1:36Schindler's List - man
-
1:36 - 1:38The Unforgiven - is about men on horses
-
1:38 - 1:42The Silence of the Lambs - is about a man who eats people, and this is interesting because although
-
1:42 - 1:47Jodi Foster's character plays a pretty big role in the film, you would never describe it as a movie about
-
1:47 - 1:52an FBI agent who... you would describe it as a movie about Hannibal Lecter.
-
1:52 - 1:54Dances with Wolves - man
-
1:54 - 1:56Driving Miss Daisy - is about a man and a woman
-
1:56 - 1:58Rain Man - is about a man and his brother
-
1:58 - 2:00The Last Emperor - man
-
2:00 - 2:01Platoon - man
-
2:01 - 2:03Out of Africa - is woman centered
-
2:03 - 2:05Amadeus - is about a man
-
2:05 - 2:07Terms of Endearment - is woman centered
-
2:07 - 2:10Gandhi - is about a man, albeit a pretty extraordinary one
-
2:10 - 2:12Chariots of Fire - men
-
2:12 - 2:14Ordinary People - is about a family
-
2:14 - 2:16Kramer vs Kramer - is about a couple
-
2:16 - 2:17The Deer Hunter - men
-
2:17 - 2:19Annie Hall - is about a man and his love life
-
2:19 - 2:23Rocky - is about a man who fights other men, again
-
2:23 - 2:25One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - man
-
2:25 - 2:28The Godfather, Part II - men
-
2:28 - 2:29The Sting - is about two con men
-
2:29 - 2:31The Godfather, Part I - men
-
2:31 - 2:33The French Connection - is about men
-
2:33 - 2:34Patton - men
-
2:34 - 2:36Midnight Cowboy - is a man
-
2:36 - 2:38Oliver! - is a boy
-
2:38 - 2:40In the Heat of the Night - is about men
-
2:40 - 2:42A Man for All Seasons - man
-
2:42 - 2:44The Sound of Music - is woman centered
-
2:44 - 2:49My Fair Lady - is another interesting one because it's pretty equally about both a man and a woman's story
-
2:49 - 2:51Tom Jones - man
-
2:51 - 2:55Lawrence of Arabia - is so male centered that there aren't even any female speaking roles in it
-
2:55 - 2:58West Side Story - is about both a man and a woman
-
2:58 - 3:02And finally in 1960 is The Apartment which is from a man's perspective
-
3:02 - 3:07So only 4 out of 50 of these films are exclusively centered on women's lives.
-
3:07 - 3:13The vast majority are films about men and their lives and although there are some ensemble casts
-
3:13 - 3:15women often play secondary or stereotypical roles.
-
3:15 - 3:20Year after year we see men's stories being created, produced, celebrated and honoured
-
3:20 - 3:23while women's stories take a back seat or aren't even represented.
-
3:23 - 3:26And it's also behind the scenes in Hollywood that is dominated by men.
-
3:26 - 3:31It's astonishing that Kathryn Bigelow is the only woman to have ever won an academy award
-
3:31 - 3:35for best director in it's 83 year history, and she won for "The Hurt Locker" in 2009,
-
3:35 - 3:38which is most definitely a male-centered film.
-
3:38 - 3:42In fact only 4 women have ever even been nominated for best director.
-
3:42 - 3:46And what's more startling is that women only account for 7% of all Hollywood directors.
-
3:46 - 3:51Hollywood executives, production companies, financial investors and backers are most interested
-
3:51 - 3:56in marketing to young men and funding stories that they, as men, can relate to.
-
3:56 - 4:01Thus they fund and produce the majority of Hollywood films to appeal to this demographic.
-
4:01 - 4:05Obviously, I want to see a many, many more films that are centered on women's lives,
-
4:05 - 4:10however it's important to note that just because a film is women centric films doesn't mean it can't still be sexist.
-
4:10 - 4:15For instance, in so called "chick flicks" women are often depicted in stereotypical gender roles
-
4:15 - 4:19being obsessed with shopping, love and finding "Mr. Right".
-
4:19 - 4:22I want to see more films that depict women as full and complete human beings
-
4:22 - 4:24not stuck in stereotypical gender roles.
-
4:24 - 4:29And just so we are absolutely clear... I'm not saying men's stories aren't good, important or interesting,
-
4:29 - 4:34but I want to point out that they are disproportionally valued and most rewarded in our society.
-
4:34 - 4:37Here are a few simple questions you can keep in mind next time you're watching a movie,
-
4:37 - 4:41to help you identify whether a story is male centered or female centered.
-
4:41 - 4:43Who has the most screen time?
-
4:43 - 4:45Whose perspective do we see the scene from?
-
4:45 - 4:49Whose story arc does the plot revolve around?
-
4:49 - 4:51Do we see them make decisions?
-
4:51 - 4:53Who do we most identify with?

- Women's Stories, Movies and the Oscars
- Description:
-
Oscar season is a time when members of Hollywood are celebrated and reward for the work that they do. But it is also a time when we see just how male centered the movie industry really is. As Allan G. Johnson points out, "If you want a story about heroism, moral courage, spiritual transformation, endurance, or any of the struggles that give human life its deepest meaning, men and masculinity are usually the terms in which you must see it," and since the vast majority of Hollywood films are about these narratives then that might explain the overabundance of stories about men's lives.
