Sekolah Papua (School of Papua)
-
0:07 - 0:12SCHOOL OF PAPUA
-
0:22 - 0:27I need to know everything about the world
I've been living in. I know everything about
my environment. -
0:27 - 0:29The sea, the fish, how to catch the fish.
-
0:29 - 0:34I followed my mother to our agricultural
land. I know what to grow, how to
nurture the plants. -
0:34 - 0:37I followed her and I was happy.
-
0:39 - 0:44So what was so hard? I came back from
school. I didn't have to do homework. -
0:50 - 0:57Teachers who lived in colonial times, we
had a different approach to teaching. -
0:58 - 1:04How to teach kids to write and read – it's
quite different from how they do it now. -
1:06 - 1:14Now they mostly do it by forcing the
pupils. -
1:34 - 1:36Why do we have to give homework to the
children? -
1:36 - 1:41We have to provide them time to play. So
they have time to play, and sleep well, -
1:41 - 1:43without heavy burdens on their shoulders.
-
1:43 - 1:47Otherwise, even when they want to play,
they remember that they have this
homework. -
1:47 - 1:50They ask their mothers but they don't
understand. -
1:50 - 1:53They ask their brothers, and it's nearly
dark and tomorrow the homework must
be handed in. -
1:53 - 1:59So, there's a limitation to the world they
need to build because of homework. -
2:06 - 2:11Too much fear results in stupidity. Too
much fear results in weak thinking. -
2:16 - 2:22Because some kids can only see to
understand. Others hear to understand.
And other kids do it and understand. -
2:22 - 2:26There are many things that we need to
understand in this case. -
2:26 - 2:29They may be looking outside but they are
still listening. -
2:29 - 2:35Now, they trap students inside buildings.
Then, the teachers become angry, -
2:35 - 2:39shouting, "What are you looking at?"
-
2:39 - 2:46We are just wasting time by giving advice.
In class we have very limited time. -
2:52 - 2:54Now we have this "superior class".
-
2:56 - 3:00So we separate kids by those who learn
fast and those who don’t. -
3:00 - 3:04The ones who already know a bit –
let other teachers teach them. -
3:10 - 3:16So, we don't simply teach, but consider
all aspects. -
3:21 - 3:28And for coaching, the teacher needs to
really get close to the kids. Hold their hands. -
3:28 - 3:32We can come and write something down
and ask students to repeat this by
themselves. -
3:48 - 3:56In several meetings with parents, I said,
“You are limiting these kids just because
of an issue with uniforms”. -
3:56 - 4:12“If their uniforms are wet, they can just come
in T-shirts. If their shoes get stolen or broken,
send them in sandals or even barefoot.” -
4:12 - 4:15“The important thing is that the child has the
eagerness to study.” -
4:18 - 4:24If we compare the era of Dutch
colonisation to today, there is a big
difference. -
4:25 - 4:31The colonialists didn't just build schools,
they started by doing research, -
4:31 - 4:36in the coastal areas, mountains, valleys,
upstream. -
4:37 - 4:43After that, they decided on the kind of
education model to use. -
4:44 - 4:52They created readings where the stories
were all based on local stories, -
4:52 - 4:57so the readings for children were based
on the places where they've been living
from youth to maturity. -
4:57 - 5:04The children understood these stories
because they knew them. -
5:04 - 5:12They have pigs, they have fire on their
farmland and in their houses. On the beach
they usually use it to cook fish. -
5:19 - 5:22If you look at how they build schools now,
-
5:22 - 5:25it's too restrictive and traps kids so they
can't freely enjoy the scenery, -
5:25 - 5:28the environment, which was created by
God. -
5:28 - 5:31In the old days, they built school walls
only as high as a small child's shoulders. -
5:32 - 5:39So we can see birds fly, clouds, rain, so
it reduces the boredom of the lesson. -
5:46 - 5:54In my school years, a day must be filled
with singing and drawing. Usually in the
late hours we will sing. -
5:54 - 5:59So this learning was based on stimulating
ideas. We discussed things by drawing them. -
6:04 - 6:12The reason I say this is a Papuan school
built in Indonesia is because the majority
of students here are Papuans. -
6:12 - 6:22There are some differences in the way
that Papuans and non-Papuans respond
to lessons. -
6:22 - 6:27If we teach one plus one, immediately the
non-Papuan kids will have the answer two. -
6:27 - 6:32But the Papuan will examine this lesson
carefully. -
6:32 - 6:36One plus one, why does it become two?
That's not because they are stupid. -
6:36 - 6:40No. But because they are very thorough.
-
6:40 - 6:47That's why the Dutch teachers would not
mix the Papuan kids with non-Papuans in
one classroom. -
6:48 - 6:52It's not discrimination, no.
-
6:52 - 6:57But if you put the Papuan kids with
Indonesian kids in one class, the
Indonesians will surpass them. -
6:57 - 7:01Indonesian parents will support their kids
to learn at home. -
7:01 - 7:06But the Papuans, even if their parents are
high-ranking officials, they are not used to
teaching their kids at home. -
7:06 - 7:08So, for the teachers this is a big burden.
-
7:08 - 7:12That's why the Papuan kids need more time
and a slower pace. It's not because they
are stupid. -
7:12 - 7:15But it's like clapping with one hand, it doesn't
make a sound. -
7:15 - 7:18But if parents and teachers are committed
together, they can clap with two hands. -
7:18 - 7:19It will work and benefit the children.
