Community Power Roadmap to Success Workshop Video
-
0:06 - 0:12What do sub-prime mortgages have to do with Atlantic Salmon, SUVs and globalization?
-
0:12 - 0:15They all depend on cheap oil, but oil is peaking.
-
0:15 - 0:19So you can count on the price at the pump going up.
-
0:19 - 0:23And as transportation costs rise, so will the cost of our food.
-
0:23 - 0:27That means that we have to wean ourselves from fossil fuels and re-engineer our lives
-
0:27 - 0:31to adapt to a world of growing energy scarcity.
-
0:31 - 0:35The good news is your neighbors and your neighborhood are about to get a lot more important
-
0:35 - 0:37in the not too distant future.
-
0:37 - 0:40Margaret Mead, a famous anthropologist, once said,
-
0:40 - 0:45"Never underestimate how a small group of thoughtful people can change the world.
-
0:45 - 0:48Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has!"
-
0:48 - 0:50That's where community power comes in.
-
0:50 - 0:54Thinking and acting locally is the only way that we are going to able to
-
0:54 - 0:59address the issues facing us today and generations to come.
-
0:59 - 1:01We have significant challenges in front of us.
-
1:01 - 1:05CO2 emissions are pouring into the atmosphere.
-
1:05 - 1:08If the global climate warms beyond an average increase of 2 degrees,
-
1:08 - 1:12the impact will be far more devastating than we can imagine.
-
1:12 - 1:18Community power and the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA) is a way for people
-
1:18 - 1:21to share adversity and decide what to do about it
-
1:21 - 1:24while creating economic benefits.
-
1:24 - 1:29The Green Energy and Green Economy Act is unlike anything else in North America.
-
1:29 - 1:33It created the framework for a cross-section of communities to come together
-
1:33 - 1:36and created the infrastructure to turn vision into action.
-
1:36 - 1:38We are faced with two paths:
-
1:38 - 1:44The Hard Path: centralized production of energy with continuous consumption and limitless growth;
-
1:44 - 1:51or the Soft Path: local production of energy, locally owned with resilient and sustainable communities.
-
1:51 - 1:55We need to make a choice of which direction we want to take.
-
1:55 - 2:01The Hard Path is more of the same, and leads to irreversable consequences.
-
2:01 - 2:06We need to make this choice together to decide on the vision we want for our community.
-
2:06 - 2:09And to take action on what we want to create together.
-
2:09 - 2:12The greatest challenge is about leadership.
-
2:12 - 2:15Finding those people in the community who have the passion
-
2:15 - 2:17and who want to make a difference.
-
2:17 - 2:19That is where YOU come in.
-
2:19 - 2:22If you are a local guy, girl, a local group,
-
2:22 - 2:25a church, or a municpal leader, who sees the benefit
-
2:25 - 2:29of community power and you want to build community resilliancy.
-
2:29 - 2:31But where to start?
-
2:31 - 2:33That is where we at OSEA come in.
-
2:33 - 2:37with our roadmap for getting your community power project from vision to reality.
-
2:37 - 2:41OSEA's Roadmap To Success Workshop will take you on a deep dive
-
2:41 - 2:44into the roadmap tools and techniques.
-
2:44 - 2:47We will create a project in your community
-
2:47 - 2:48and help you develop an action plan
-
2:48 - 2:51to bring it from vision to reality.
-
2:51 - 2:55The Community Energy Partnership Program (CEPP)
-
2:55 - 2:58offers a 90% grant on eligible activities
-
2:58 - 3:03that have the technical, financial and governing feasability of a community project.
-
3:03 - 3:06And the Act changed the Cooperatives Corporations Act
-
3:06 - 3:10to allow for the creation of a renewable energy cooperative
-
3:10 - 3:12as a means to encourage community involvement.
-
3:12 - 3:16Fun, challenging, paving the way for community-inspired actions
-
3:16 - 3:18to save the planet.
-
3:18 - 3:21It's a reason to meet your neighbors throughout your community.
-
3:21 - 3:25It's a way for all of us to literally invest in the future.
-
3:25 - 3:28You'll be able to actually buy a share in the development
-
3:28 - 3:32from a community-operated renewable energy cooperative.
-
3:32 - 3:35You'll be a member of a democratically-controlled investment opportunity
-
3:35 - 3:39who's primary role, after return to investors, shareholders, members,
-
3:39 - 3:41is returned to the community.
-
3:41 - 3:47Supporting community sports, cultural, environmental, and other philanthropic activities.
-
3:47 - 3:51Is a renewable energy cooperative the right model for YOUR group?
-
3:51 - 3:56This is important to decide, as it will influence how you raise capital for the project.
-
3:56 - 4:02A 250 kilowatt solar PV can cost up to one million, five hundred thousand dollars.
-
4:02 - 4:05That's a big investment for a community.
-
4:05 - 4:09A 2 megawatt wind project can be four to five million.
-
4:09 - 4:11But communities are doing it.
-
4:11 - 4:13And sharing the investment opportunity locally,
-
4:13 - 4:16rather than with the ups and downs of the Stock Market.
-
4:16 - 4:20The same process is applicable to other renewable energy technologies.
-
4:20 - 4:24Now you are ready to submit your CEPP application.
-
4:24 - 4:29This will help you understand more of the technical, financial, and governance options.
-
4:29 - 4:34Through the OSEA Community Power Services Group, we can assist you through the application process
-
4:34 - 4:37as well as help you to manage your project.
-
4:37 - 4:40The Workshop will connect people with passion in the community
-
4:40 - 4:42with organizations and people with assets
-
4:42 - 4:45that can accommodate renewable generation projects:
-
4:45 - 4:51municipal buildings, hospitals, brownfield sites, used landfills, quarries, business rooftops.
-
4:53 - 4:56Once you've found the heart and mind of the community,
-
4:56 - 5:00then there is nothing stopping you from moving your project forward.
-
5:00 - 5:02And what do you know? Other things start to happen:
-
5:02 - 5:04you begin to drive less,
-
5:04 - 5:05shop locally,
-
5:05 - 5:07get to meet new people,
-
5:07 - 5:09build a community energy plan,
-
5:09 - 5:13influence local politicians on environmental matters.
-
5:13 - 5:17You have the capacity to act locally and think locally.
