Cube and Cylinder Renderings - Matt and Gloss finishes

  • 0:05 - 0:10
And so we're going to look at drawing demo
  • 0:10 - 0:20
going to look the cube and cylinder
  • 0:20 - 0:30
and I'm going to show you how you can render these described as three-dimensional objects using a marker and pastels
  • 0:30 - 0:40
in the first instance with a look at the cube and cylinder as matte finish
  • 0:40 - 0:50
    so get a blue marker
  • 0:50 - 1:00
I'm going to apply marker to this cube and very important to do something I would recommend I've done it for
  • 1:00 - 1:09
It is very easy to transfer ink pencil or pastel from paper onto the side of your hand and vice versa
  • 1:09 - 1:17
likely end up transferring muck so I got into a long time ago trying to keep paper under my hand
  • 1:17 - 1:26
Particularly important when doing pastel but let's not worry for the moment
  • 1:26 - 1:34
I apply my blue marker to this top surface of the cube
  • 1:34 - 1:43
Remember the trick is to try and move it fairly quickly if you're trying to keep this wet ink front
  • 1:43 - 1:51
So coming back trying to keep in the edges as best as I can
  • 1:51 - 2:00
    Got that first face in
  • 2:00 - 2:09
now coming in the vertical face
  • 2:09 - 2:17
I would recommend that you try to move the marker in sympathy with surface
  • 2:17 - 2:26
so vertical flat surface here so I'm moving in vertical strokes so that means is that if I don't manage to achieve a flat finish and sometimes when people are early on with markers they struggle
  • 2:26 - 2:34
it's not the end of the world if you don't get it
  • 2:34 - 2:43
At least if there are streaks that are kind of in sympathy with the form
  • 2:43 - 2:51
To note that this marker is probably on it's way out
  • 2:51 - 3:00
it struggles to put it down ink down as quickly as I'd like
  • 3:00 - 3:08
hopefully going to let me finish this successfully
  • 3:08 - 3:15
    Putting this face in
  • 3:15 - 3:22
This marker is not long for this world
  • 3:22 - 3:30
    Only just
  • 3:30 - 3:38
So I put my three faces
  • 3:38 - 3:45
At the moment there is not a really great sense of 3-D are all of these faces at the same tonal intensity
  • 3:45 - 3:52
so it looks very flat and what we need to do now is to address that and bring out the dimensionality
  • 3:52 - 4:00
the key thing whenever you are sketching or drawing something is you need to be clear about your light source
  • 4:00 - 4:07
I always look on the basis that my light comes from my right side coming in about 45째 angle over my shoulder
  • 4:07 - 4:13
think of it as a kind of like if you were standing in a desert
  • 4:13 - 4:20
light you might getting towards evening
  • 4:20 - 4:27
so not really high-level light coming at a lower angle
  • 4:27 - 4:33
Sun is coming from the right-hand side is what you would now find that the upper surface which is horizontal flat
  • 4:33 - 4:40
    facing up towards the sky
  • 4:40 - 4:47
catch the most light quite highly illuminated
  • 4:47 - 4:53
the two vertical surfaces not as much light
  • 4:53 - 5:00
basically facing sideways so need to be tonally darker than this flat surface
  • 5:00 - 5:06
Because my light is coming from the right
  • 5:06 - 5:12
means this right-hand vertical face is still facing towards the light source
  • 5:12 - 5:18
so although darker than the upper surface still have a reasonable amount of illumination on it
  • 5:18 - 5:24
surface the darkest is this surface
  • 5:24 - 5:30
the surface which is facing to the left and is effectively that is almost in the shade
  • 5:30 - 5:36
thing you can do with marker is use the same colour marker okay you can use it up to 3 times possibly 4
  • 5:36 - 5:42
depends on I think for safety normally no more than 3
  • 5:42 - 5:48
So I can do now I hope the marker is not going to give out meanwhile
  • 5:48 - 5:54
I can come in and apply second layer of marker to those two vertical faces
  • 5:54 - 6:00
    again moving quite quickly
  • 6:00 - 6:10
