Build Yourself. | Tristan Copley Smith
-
0:11 - 0:16Right now the world's productive power is controlled by a few giant corporations.
-
0:16 - 0:21The products are expensive, their designs are secret, and to make things worse,
-
0:21 - 0:25we are now seeing these same companies engineer their products to fail over time,
-
0:25 - 0:29simply to increase profits.
-
0:29 - 0:35I saw this problem and I thought we have all the tools available to make this machinery for ourselves
-
0:35 - 0:40and with the internet we can distribute our designs for next to nothing.
-
0:40 - 0:43So, I bought some land, and started building it.
-
0:45 - 0:50From our location in Missouri, we are developing low cost modular tools,
-
0:50 - 0:55that anyone can build and we are sharing our designs on the internet, free of charge.
-
0:55 - 0:58People who need equipment are typically the ones who can least afford it.
-
0:58 - 1:01The applications are anything from 3rd world development
-
1:01 - 1:05to a dying farming community, to standard economic enterprise.
-
1:05 - 1:10The point is that we make equipment available to everyone who needs it.
-
1:10 - 1:16OpenSource Ecology is a project, it's... in practice we are working on the Global Village Construction Set.
-
1:16 - 1:20Which is a set of the 50 industrial machines that it takes
-
1:20 - 1:22to build a small civilization with modern comforts.
-
1:22 - 1:29It's everything that you need to provide your energy, food, housing, and other technologies.
-
1:29 - 1:33Very little true collaboration really happens, when we have the patent system, and it's like:
-
1:33 - 1:38"I'm gonna pounce on you if gonna try to learn from me and do better than I did!"
-
1:38 - 1:42The beautiful thing about the open-source development method is that, you produce the plans,
-
1:42 - 1:46you give a lot to the community, and then stuff starts coming back.
-
1:46 - 1:49And then products will be better and better, everybody wins.
-
1:49 - 1:54Other day I got an email, someone who has built the compressed earth-brick press.
-
1:54 - 1:57Wow! Hey that looks exactly like mine!
-
1:57 - 2:00I forget exactly how I ran into open-source ecology
-
2:00 - 2:02but I think I was destined to find it
-
2:02 - 2:05just from my interest in natural building and open-source.
-
2:05 - 2:09I just seemed to make sense to use this machine here for building our house.
-
2:09 - 2:11So then I saw the designs looking at how I was going to build it,
-
2:11 - 2:14I noticed that some of the code could use improving
-
2:14 - 2:18and the board that does the controlling could also use some improving.
-
2:18 - 2:20There's actually quite a few people who
-
2:20 - 2:22would have never thought that they could build a house.
-
2:22 - 2:26And by kind of like showing them: "Hey look, I've never built a house before"
-
2:26 - 2:30"I've never done hydraulics before, but it seems to be working."
-
2:30 - 2:34A lot of times we think this kind of work is impossible, to build your own living environment.
-
2:34 - 2:37For me it's been the most transformative experience.
-
2:37 - 2:41I've learned that I can do it and I want to show that to others.
-
2:41 - 2:45What if everybody were to join together to make the best products,
-
2:46 - 2:47most robust products that are open-source
-
2:47 - 2:49that anyone has access to producing them.
-
2:49 - 2:51And therefore you can run an economy in a collaborative way
-
2:51 - 2:54as opposed to a competitive, wasteful way.
-
2:54 - 2:57We can build this kind of stuff.
-
2:57 - 3:01This mythology of incompetence or the power control
-
3:01 - 3:03that got us to think that we can't do things for ourselves
-
3:03 - 3:05but, we have the power.
-
3:05 - 3:09So I would inspire people to go out and build yourself.
