Welcome to SAGE - Wilkes Community College

  • 0:01 - 0:20
    (music)
  • 0:20 - 0:25
It would be a great benefit to you to be a SAGE member. I can guarantee that.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
because it has made a difference in my learning. Umm...like I said, I'm proud to be a SAGE member.
  • 0:29 - 0:35
Hi, my name is Anthony and I'm a displaced worker. I worked in the furniture industry
  • 0:35 - 0:40
for 24 years and I ended up coming back to school.
  • 0:40 - 0:46
If you're struggling in a class, SAGE tutoring will be really beneficial. It helped me a lot.
  • 0:46 - 0:52
When I was struggling in a class they had tutoring that was able to help me pass my class.
  • 0:52 - 0:58
In the math program, I had to start with the basic math and I've had tutoring all the way through my math program
  • 0:58 - 1:04
And, if it hadn't been for that, I don't think I would have passed any of the math.
  • 1:04 - 1:10
    What helped me the most is obviously the tutoring. I mean, it's drastically improved my grades;
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    it's kept me focused.
  • 1:12 - 1:18
Ummm, but with SAGE, I found that I had support, guidance, and counseling.
  • 1:19 - 1:27
And, SAGE has been my peace haven. I come here; I study. I've made close friendships.
  • 1:27 - 1:32
I'm here in between every one of my classes everyday. I've actually started out
  • 1:32 - 1:38
as a tutee. Now I tutor quite a few different subjects and I've had
  • 1:38 - 1:44
just so many different days I've broken down and cried; I've just
  • 1:44 - 1:49
been so happy. I've gotten hugs from everyone for my accomplishments.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
SAGE has been very, very beneficial to me.
  • 1:51 - 2:01
The other thing that I'll really stress to you is that you can meet other students
  • 2:01 - 2:06
in the same situation that you are and you have that commraderieship that
  • 2:06 - 2:11
helps you through school. And I just encourage you to take advantage
  • 2:11 - 2:14
of the SAGE program here at Wilkes Community College.
  • 2:14 - 2:20
And also, in SAGE, they have a book loan program that i've taken
  • 2:20 - 2:25
advantage of. I've borrowed some calculators and have had calculators loaned to me, and books.
  • 2:25 - 2:29
It's saved me a great deal of money. And, you have to return them.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
But it does, it saves you a great deal of money on books that you're
  • 2:32 - 2:35
not going to keep with you anyway. You don't have to go through the
  • 2:35 - 2:37
buying a book and selling them back. Like I've said, it's very
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    convenient, very helpful.
  • 2:39 - 2:44
I think it's very helpful. Yeah. they let you check out books.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
yeah, it's free. Free is good! (laughter)
  • 2:47 - 2:54
You can earn shirts if you meet your goals. Counseling is good.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
Always very nice people. Very helpful...people!
  • 2:58 - 3:04
I've had advisers help me with registering for classes when my personal
  • 3:04 - 3:06
adviser couldn't get to me. That's been a big help.
  • 3:07 - 3:11
They've helped me with my financial aid. I've also received the scholarship
  • 3:11 - 3:13
from SAGE, that's been very helpful.
  • 3:13 - 3:20
You can get tutoring. You can be tutored. I got tutored (laughter)
  • 3:20 - 3:22
You can be a tutor. Yeah.
  • 3:22 - 3:29
Hi, I'm Danny. SAGE is a really great place to come to in order to study
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    and improve your study habits.
  • 3:31 - 3:36
Yeah, tutors do get paid. I was a tutor! I wish I was one. (Laughter)
  • 3:36 - 3:44
Umm...it really helps to have a special place on campus to go to
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    away from all the noise.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
SAGE has helped me becuase they've got a computer lab that I can use to do my
  • 3:50 - 3:55
homework assignments. They have tutoring to help with classes I need help in.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
If I need to just talk to somebody they're here to talk to.
  • 3:58 - 4:07
It's a good place to study for homework, tests, quizzes, get caught up in all your classes.
  • 4:07 - 4:13
Hello my name is Danny. And, I'm Rebecca. And I'm a displaced
  • 4:13 - 4:19
worker and I've returned to school, uh...returned to college after being
  • 4:19 - 4:24
out of school for about 15 years now.
  • 4:24 - 4:29
SAGE can be a great benefit to you because they've helped me with getting
  • 4:29 - 4:35
tutoring, getting help, actually even advising me on things. They helped me
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    get my schedule together.
  • 4:36 - 4:40
There's many, many people here to help you with the question you
  • 4:40 - 4:47
would have about advising you for classes, financial aid and
  • 4:47 - 4:51
those sort of things that you'll need.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
And, I've decided to come back to school. I've also been out
  • 4:55 - 4:59
of school for about the same amount of time, for about 15 years.
  • 4:59 - 5:08
SAGE means the most to me for the guidance and the support that I get.
  • 5:08 - 5:13
But, it's a great program. you can't ask for anything better.
  • 5:13 - 5:19
    (music)
  • 5:19 - 5:25
Actually networking is building a group of people that
  • 5:25 - 5:32
can help you in your success as a student. That would be fellow
  • 5:32 - 5:40
students, instructors, the SAGE staff, especially the SAGE staff. They're here to help you.
  • 5:40 - 5:45
It doesn't hurt to raise your hand, ask quesitons, all the time.
  • 5:45 - 5:47
Just ask questions. That's what they're here for!
  • 5:47 - 5:51
They can guide you in some of the classes you need to take
  • 5:51 - 5:54
in order to be successful when you get out into the job market.
  • 5:54 - 6:00
You have to think of yourself as a selling tool so that when
  • 6:00 - 6:03
you're in the market you're really selling yourself to your employers.
  • 6:03 - 6:08
So you want to make sure that you get the best instructions, you get guidance
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    from the SAGE staff.
  • 6:09 - 6:14
Don't be afraid to reach out and make friends with people.
  • 6:14 - 6:18
Our instructors are people, too. And it's good to get to know your instructor
  • 6:18 - 6:19
and for them to get to know you.
  • 6:19 - 6:24
    (music)
  • 6:24 - 6:30
College is different from high school because you don't have
  • 6:30 - 6:33
teachers telling you to hurry up and get to class so you're not late.
  • 6:33 - 6:37
You have to work time management so you're not late.
  • 6:37 - 6:41
College is different than high school in the fact that you have a
  • 6:41 - 6:44
lot more freedom but with that freedom comes a whole lot more responsibility.
  • 6:44 - 6:49
Making friends is a lot easier. You don't have to be under pressure
  • 6:49 - 6:53
There's all different kinds of age groups, and if you're in class
  • 6:53 - 6:56
you're there for the same reason, so you have a different way of
  • 6:56 - 6:57
    bonding.
  • 6:57 - 7:04
Uh...you have less class time, but you to have a lot more time studying what
  • 7:04 - 7:07
you've learned in that class. So, it's almost flip-flopped.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
I wouldn't say it's easier, but it's easier if you make it that way.
  • 7:10 - 7:16
You become more sociable in college. Because, in high school you don't have to ask
  • 7:16 - 7:20
your neighbor for help, you just go straight to the instructor. But, in college
  • 7:20 - 7:23
the instructor is not always there to help you where you have to go to
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    someone else.
  • 7:25 - 7:29
    (music)
  • 7:29 - 7:32
Uh..I think another good thing about being in SAGE is the campus
  • 7:32 - 7:36
visits you go on. It's especially important if you're planning
  • 7:36 - 7:40
to transfer to a four-year university. On the campus visits you
  • 7:40 - 7:45
get to meet with the professors, um...you get to take the campus tours, kind
  • 7:45 - 7:48
of get a feel for the campus so you know whether it's too big for you
  • 7:48 - 7:49
    or too small for you.
  • 7:49 - 7:57
Yes, I plan to go NC State for a campus visit since I'm going into
  • 7:57 - 8:02
veterninary medicine. So, I can get a feel for what the school is like, see if
  • 8:02 - 8:08
I really want to go there when it gets time to graduate from WCC.
  • 8:08 - 8:13
I'll be transferring to Winston-Salem State for their nursing program, and hopefully see what their school
  • 8:13 - 8:17
is like and how their nursing program will be beneficial to me.
  • 8:17 - 8:21
    (music)
  • 8:21 - 8:29
Being selected as a mentor in the SAGE program was very exciting for me. It helped me with my leadership
  • 8:29 - 8:37
skills..uh..and it helped me to focus more on the techniques that SAGE presents to you when you in the beginning when you become
  • 8:37 - 8:41
a SAGE member. As far as mentoring goes it's been beneficial
  • 8:41 - 8:46
to me in order to help people, to guide people along with their
  • 8:46 - 8:52
studies, areas to go to for assistance whether it be Student
  • 8:52 - 9:00
Services, the library, SAGE, and helping them find tutors that will help
  • 9:00 - 9:03
them with the subject matter they are having difficulty with.
  • 9:03 - 9:09
The mentoring program is um..a program where your peers
  • 9:09 - 9:14
your fellow students, that guide you through some of the materials
  • 9:14 - 9:20
that are very helpful to you that may not go so in depth with
  • 9:20 - 9:23
some of your other classes. It's having someone to go to
  • 9:23 - 9:25
    knowing that they're not alone
  • 9:25 - 9:32
and the experiences that they're having is in general just the
  • 9:32 - 9:37
same experiences all the students are having. And, not everyone's willing to talk about it
  • 9:37 - 9:42
and instead of keeping it bottled up inside, effecting your studies,
  • 9:42 - 9:46
it's great to have someone to go to and talk to that's already
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    been through the same experiences.
  • 9:48 - 9:53
    (music)
  • 9:53 - 9:56
There's different types of study methods and learning methods.
  • 9:56 - 10:01
You have to find out what your's is so that you can take advantage
  • 10:01 - 10:05
of that and be able to prosper in your classes.
  • 10:05 - 10:09
Um...you're new to school and everything is totally different
  • 10:09 - 10:13
from what you've experienced before in high school or even
  • 10:13 - 10:17
in the workplace. Myself, I'm a dislocated worker after over
  • 10:17 - 10:21
30 years from being out of school, coming back to school has
  • 10:21 - 10:23
been a whole new experience even still.
  • 10:23 - 10:26
I have learned that the more you get involved on the campus
  • 10:26 - 10:32
involved in SAGE, involved in your clubs, the better student you are.
  • 10:32 - 10:35
You prosper more, you learn leadership skills.
  • 10:35 - 10:42
Well, my first study tip will be to study your notes in every
  • 10:42 - 10:45
class every day and it doesn't need to be a huge study
  • 10:45 - 10:48
session, just small study sessions each day, so you don't
  • 10:48 - 10:51
end up having to cram the last day before a test, because
  • 10:51 - 10:54
you won't keep it in your mind that way, If you study each day
  • 10:54 - 10:58
in small amounts it will stay in your brain more.
  • 10:58 - 11:02
Set yourself a specific time, find yourself a specific place
  • 11:02 - 11:05
and that's another thing I like about this SAGE program. You've got
  • 11:05 - 11:09
an area here where you can get by yourself. It's quiet; you can study.
  • 11:09 - 11:14
Uh...you have to have a place where you can just focus on
  • 11:14 - 11:14
    what you're doing.
  • 11:14 - 11:17
When I review I look over someone else's notes to make sure
  • 11:17 - 11:21
that we've got the same thing where if I miss something, they might have caught it.
  • 11:21 - 11:26
I had a math class that was a very difficult class with
  • 11:26 - 11:32
minimal instruction. It was mostly you do the material on your own
  • 11:32 - 11:36
and then if you have questions the instructor would help you
  • 11:36 - 11:40
out with that. So, we formed a study group and that was
  • 11:40 - 11:44
very beneficial because we could bounce off ideas from
  • 11:44 - 11:46
what we've read and learned and tried examples.
  • 11:46 - 11:52
Hmmm....create study groups. Have your friends come and
  • 11:52 - 11:52
    study with you.
  • 11:52 - 11:55
The best thing I found about SAGE is the study group, where
  • 11:55 - 11:59
a group of students get together for a certain subject or class
  • 11:59 - 12:02
and they make up their own test questions becuase anyting
  • 12:02 - 12:06
is possible for a test. So, make as many as you can and just
  • 12:06 - 12:10
go through them and try the best you can to make them accurate
  • 12:10 - 12:11
    as they can be.
  • 12:11 - 12:15
Always do your assignments two days before they're due.
  • 12:15 - 12:18
That way you can review them and you're not rushing for the
  • 12:18 - 12:23
last minute. Yeah. Because you don't want to be pressed for time.
  • 12:23 - 12:27
Do not procrastinate! Because, procrastination is the worst
  • 12:27 - 12:32
thing, in my opinion, that will hurt your success in school.
  • 12:32 - 12:36
Depending on the classes that you're in even if they don't assign
  • 12:36 - 12:38
you homework, you have to assign yourself some homework.
  • 12:38 - 12:43
To be in college it's required to have time to study. If you don't
  • 12:43 - 12:48
have time.....you don't do as well. You won't be successful.
  • 12:48 - 12:53
Whatever you do, don't wait unitl the last minute! Prepare
  • 12:53 - 12:59
a week to two weeks in advance before you take an exam, and
  • 12:59 - 13:01
it will make it so much easier to get through the exam.
  • 13:01 - 13:06
I find that if you dedicate a certain amount of time even if
  • 13:06 - 13:11
it's 30 minutes a day studying a particular, you know whatever,
  • 13:11 - 13:14
subject that you're in, that you're doing and studying for that you
  • 13:14 - 13:21
don't have to wait until the night before to do it. You're constantly
  • 13:21 - 13:25
moving that information around in your head and studying it
  • 13:25 - 13:29
and learning it and uh, because if you put if off until the
  • 13:29 - 13:35
night before you can't process all that information in one night.
  • 13:35 - 13:36
    It makes it really hard.
  • 13:36 - 13:40
Uh...study to where you understand, not just to memorize
  • 13:40 - 13:44
a fact. If you understand why something is, the way it is,
  • 13:44 - 13:47
then you'll understand the concept a lot easier.
  • 13:47 - 13:52
I would suggest to be self-motivated. That's very important.
  • 13:52 - 13:55
I'd just like to share another tip. For me, what has really made me
  • 13:55 - 13:59
make things work good for me to be a success in college is
  • 13:59 - 14:04
to have the right attitude. And you know, don't be afraid! Don't be afraid to step
  • 14:04 - 14:05
out there and give it all you've got!
  • 14:05 - 14:08
There's help here that's provided for you. You just have to
  • 14:08 - 14:12
ask for it. And uh, people are willing to help you.
  • 14:12 - 14:18
Umm...I spent the last two years learning all over again
  • 14:18 - 14:19
and it's been a great experience!
  • 14:19 -
    (music)
