Welcome to SAGE - Wilkes Community College
-
0:01 - 0:20(music)
-
0:20 - 0:25It would be a great benefit to you to be a SAGE member. I can guarantee that.
-
0:25 - 0:29because it has made a difference in my learning. Umm...like I said, I'm proud to be a SAGE member.
-
0:29 - 0:35Hi, my name is Anthony and I'm a displaced worker. I worked in the furniture industry
-
0:35 - 0:40for 24 years and I ended up coming back to school.
-
0:40 - 0:46If you're struggling in a class, SAGE tutoring will be really beneficial. It helped me a lot.
-
0:46 - 0:52When I was struggling in a class they had tutoring that was able to help me pass my class.
-
0:52 - 0:58In the math program, I had to start with the basic math and I've had tutoring all the way through my math program
-
0:58 - 1:04And, if it hadn't been for that, I don't think I would have passed any of the math.
-
1:04 - 1:10What helped me the most is obviously the tutoring. I mean, it's drastically improved my grades;
-
1:10 - 1:11it's kept me focused.
-
1:12 - 1:18Ummm, but with SAGE, I found that I had support, guidance, and counseling.
-
1:19 - 1:27And, SAGE has been my peace haven. I come here; I study. I've made close friendships.
-
1:27 - 1:32I'm here in between every one of my classes everyday. I've actually started out
-
1:32 - 1:38as a tutee. Now I tutor quite a few different subjects and I've had
-
1:38 - 1:44just so many different days I've broken down and cried; I've just
-
1:44 - 1:49been so happy. I've gotten hugs from everyone for my accomplishments.
-
1:49 - 1:51SAGE has been very, very beneficial to me.
-
1:51 - 2:01The other thing that I'll really stress to you is that you can meet other students
-
2:01 - 2:06in the same situation that you are and you have that commraderieship that
-
2:06 - 2:11helps you through school. And I just encourage you to take advantage
-
2:11 - 2:14of the SAGE program here at Wilkes Community College.
-
2:14 - 2:20And also, in SAGE, they have a book loan program that i've taken
-
2:20 - 2:25advantage of. I've borrowed some calculators and have had calculators loaned to me, and books.
-
2:25 - 2:29It's saved me a great deal of money. And, you have to return them.
-
2:29 - 2:32But it does, it saves you a great deal of money on books that you're
-
2:32 - 2:35not going to keep with you anyway. You don't have to go through the
-
2:35 - 2:37buying a book and selling them back. Like I've said, it's very
-
2:37 - 2:39convenient, very helpful.
-
2:39 - 2:44I think it's very helpful. Yeah. they let you check out books.
-
2:44 - 2:47yeah, it's free. Free is good! (laughter)
-
2:47 - 2:54You can earn shirts if you meet your goals. Counseling is good.
-
2:54 - 2:58Always very nice people. Very helpful...people!
-
2:58 - 3:04I've had advisers help me with registering for classes when my personal
-
3:04 - 3:06adviser couldn't get to me. That's been a big help.
-
3:07 - 3:11They've helped me with my financial aid. I've also received the scholarship
-
3:11 - 3:13from SAGE, that's been very helpful.
-
3:13 - 3:20You can get tutoring. You can be tutored. I got tutored (laughter)
-
3:20 - 3:22You can be a tutor. Yeah.
-
3:22 - 3:29Hi, I'm Danny. SAGE is a really great place to come to in order to study
-
3:29 - 3:31and improve your study habits.
-
3:31 - 3:36Yeah, tutors do get paid. I was a tutor! I wish I was one. (Laughter)
-
3:36 - 3:44Umm...it really helps to have a special place on campus to go to
-
3:44 - 3:46away from all the noise.
-
3:46 - 3:50SAGE has helped me becuase they've got a computer lab that I can use to do my
-
3:50 - 3:55homework assignments. They have tutoring to help with classes I need help in.
-
3:55 - 3:58If I need to just talk to somebody they're here to talk to.
-
3:58 - 4:07It's a good place to study for homework, tests, quizzes, get caught up in all your classes.
-
4:07 - 4:13Hello my name is Danny. And, I'm Rebecca. And I'm a displaced
-
4:13 - 4:19worker and I've returned to school, uh...returned to college after being
-
4:19 - 4:24out of school for about 15 years now.
-
4:24 - 4:29SAGE can be a great benefit to you because they've helped me with getting
-
4:29 - 4:35tutoring, getting help, actually even advising me on things. They helped me
-
4:35 - 4:36get my schedule together.
-
4:36 - 4:40There's many, many people here to help you with the question you
-
4:40 - 4:47would have about advising you for classes, financial aid and
-
4:47 - 4:51those sort of things that you'll need.
-
4:51 - 4:55And, I've decided to come back to school. I've also been out
-
4:55 - 4:59of school for about the same amount of time, for about 15 years.
-
4:59 - 5:08SAGE means the most to me for the guidance and the support that I get.
-
5:08 - 5:13But, it's a great program. you can't ask for anything better.
-
5:13 - 5:19(music)
-
5:19 - 5:25Actually networking is building a group of people that
-
5:25 - 5:32can help you in your success as a student. That would be fellow
-
5:32 - 5:40students, instructors, the SAGE staff, especially the SAGE staff. They're here to help you.
-
5:40 - 5:45It doesn't hurt to raise your hand, ask quesitons, all the time.
-
5:45 - 5:47Just ask questions. That's what they're here for!
-
5:47 - 5:51They can guide you in some of the classes you need to take
-
5:51 - 5:54in order to be successful when you get out into the job market.
-
5:54 - 6:00You have to think of yourself as a selling tool so that when
-
6:00 - 6:03you're in the market you're really selling yourself to your employers.
-
6:03 - 6:08So you want to make sure that you get the best instructions, you get guidance
-
6:08 - 6:09from the SAGE staff.
-
6:09 - 6:14Don't be afraid to reach out and make friends with people.
-
6:14 - 6:18Our instructors are people, too. And it's good to get to know your instructor
-
6:18 - 6:19and for them to get to know you.
-
6:19 - 6:24(music)
-
6:24 - 6:30College is different from high school because you don't have
-
6:30 - 6:33teachers telling you to hurry up and get to class so you're not late.
-
6:33 - 6:37You have to work time management so you're not late.
-
6:37 - 6:41College is different than high school in the fact that you have a
-
6:41 - 6:44lot more freedom but with that freedom comes a whole lot more responsibility.
-
6:44 - 6:49Making friends is a lot easier. You don't have to be under pressure
-
6:49 - 6:53There's all different kinds of age groups, and if you're in class
-
6:53 - 6:56you're there for the same reason, so you have a different way of
-
6:56 - 6:57bonding.
-
6:57 - 7:04Uh...you have less class time, but you to have a lot more time studying what
-
7:04 - 7:07you've learned in that class. So, it's almost flip-flopped.
-
7:07 - 7:10I wouldn't say it's easier, but it's easier if you make it that way.
-
7:10 - 7:16You become more sociable in college. Because, in high school you don't have to ask
-
7:16 - 7:20your neighbor for help, you just go straight to the instructor. But, in college
-
7:20 - 7:23the instructor is not always there to help you where you have to go to
-
7:23 - 7:25someone else.
-
7:25 - 7:29(music)
-
7:29 - 7:32Uh..I think another good thing about being in SAGE is the campus
-
7:32 - 7:36visits you go on. It's especially important if you're planning
-
7:36 - 7:40to transfer to a four-year university. On the campus visits you
-
7:40 - 7:45get to meet with the professors, um...you get to take the campus tours, kind
-
7:45 - 7:48of get a feel for the campus so you know whether it's too big for you
-
7:48 - 7:49or too small for you.
-
7:49 - 7:57Yes, I plan to go NC State for a campus visit since I'm going into
-
7:57 - 8:02veterninary medicine. So, I can get a feel for what the school is like, see if
-
8:02 - 8:08I really want to go there when it gets time to graduate from WCC.
-
8:08 - 8:13I'll be transferring to Winston-Salem State for their nursing program, and hopefully see what their school
-
8:13 - 8:17is like and how their nursing program will be beneficial to me.
-
8:17 - 8:21(music)
-
8:21 - 8:29Being selected as a mentor in the SAGE program was very exciting for me. It helped me with my leadership
-
8:29 - 8:37skills..uh..and it helped me to focus more on the techniques that SAGE presents to you when you in the beginning when you become
-
8:37 - 8:41a SAGE member. As far as mentoring goes it's been beneficial
-
8:41 - 8:46to me in order to help people, to guide people along with their
-
8:46 - 8:52studies, areas to go to for assistance whether it be Student
-
8:52 - 9:00Services, the library, SAGE, and helping them find tutors that will help
-
9:00 - 9:03them with the subject matter they are having difficulty with.
-
9:03 - 9:09The mentoring program is um..a program where your peers
-
9:09 - 9:14your fellow students, that guide you through some of the materials
-
9:14 - 9:20that are very helpful to you that may not go so in depth with
-
9:20 - 9:23some of your other classes. It's having someone to go to
-
9:23 - 9:25knowing that they're not alone
-
9:25 - 9:32and the experiences that they're having is in general just the
-
9:32 - 9:37same experiences all the students are having. And, not everyone's willing to talk about it
-
9:37 - 9:42and instead of keeping it bottled up inside, effecting your studies,
-
9:42 - 9:46it's great to have someone to go to and talk to that's already
-
9:46 - 9:48been through the same experiences.
-
9:48 - 9:53(music)
-
9:53 - 9:56There's different types of study methods and learning methods.
-
9:56 - 10:01You have to find out what your's is so that you can take advantage
-
10:01 - 10:05of that and be able to prosper in your classes.
-
10:05 - 10:09Um...you're new to school and everything is totally different
-
10:09 - 10:13from what you've experienced before in high school or even
-
10:13 - 10:17in the workplace. Myself, I'm a dislocated worker after over
-
10:17 - 10:2130 years from being out of school, coming back to school has
-
10:21 - 10:23been a whole new experience even still.
-
10:23 - 10:26I have learned that the more you get involved on the campus
-
10:26 - 10:32involved in SAGE, involved in your clubs, the better student you are.
-
10:32 - 10:35You prosper more, you learn leadership skills.
-
10:35 - 10:42Well, my first study tip will be to study your notes in every
-
10:42 - 10:45class every day and it doesn't need to be a huge study
-
10:45 - 10:48session, just small study sessions each day, so you don't
-
10:48 - 10:51end up having to cram the last day before a test, because
-
10:51 - 10:54you won't keep it in your mind that way, If you study each day
-
10:54 - 10:58in small amounts it will stay in your brain more.
-
10:58 - 11:02Set yourself a specific time, find yourself a specific place
-
11:02 - 11:05and that's another thing I like about this SAGE program. You've got
-
11:05 - 11:09an area here where you can get by yourself. It's quiet; you can study.
-
11:09 - 11:14Uh...you have to have a place where you can just focus on
-
11:14 - 11:14what you're doing.
-
11:14 - 11:17When I review I look over someone else's notes to make sure
-
11:17 - 11:21that we've got the same thing where if I miss something, they might have caught it.
-
11:21 - 11:26I had a math class that was a very difficult class with
-
11:26 - 11:32minimal instruction. It was mostly you do the material on your own
-
11:32 - 11:36and then if you have questions the instructor would help you
-
11:36 - 11:40out with that. So, we formed a study group and that was
-
11:40 - 11:44very beneficial because we could bounce off ideas from
-
11:44 - 11:46what we've read and learned and tried examples.
-
11:46 - 11:52Hmmm....create study groups. Have your friends come and
-
11:52 - 11:52study with you.
-
11:52 - 11:55The best thing I found about SAGE is the study group, where
-
11:55 - 11:59a group of students get together for a certain subject or class
-
11:59 - 12:02and they make up their own test questions becuase anyting
-
12:02 - 12:06is possible for a test. So, make as many as you can and just
-
12:06 - 12:10go through them and try the best you can to make them accurate
-
12:10 - 12:11as they can be.
-
12:11 - 12:15Always do your assignments two days before they're due.
-
12:15 - 12:18That way you can review them and you're not rushing for the
-
12:18 - 12:23last minute. Yeah. Because you don't want to be pressed for time.
-
12:23 - 12:27Do not procrastinate! Because, procrastination is the worst
-
12:27 - 12:32thing, in my opinion, that will hurt your success in school.
-
12:32 - 12:36Depending on the classes that you're in even if they don't assign
-
12:36 - 12:38you homework, you have to assign yourself some homework.
-
12:38 - 12:43To be in college it's required to have time to study. If you don't
-
12:43 - 12:48have time.....you don't do as well. You won't be successful.
-
12:48 - 12:53Whatever you do, don't wait unitl the last minute! Prepare
-
12:53 - 12:59a week to two weeks in advance before you take an exam, and
-
12:59 - 13:01it will make it so much easier to get through the exam.
-
13:01 - 13:06I find that if you dedicate a certain amount of time even if
-
13:06 - 13:11it's 30 minutes a day studying a particular, you know whatever,
-
13:11 - 13:14subject that you're in, that you're doing and studying for that you
-
13:14 - 13:21don't have to wait until the night before to do it. You're constantly
-
13:21 - 13:25moving that information around in your head and studying it
-
13:25 - 13:29and learning it and uh, because if you put if off until the
-
13:29 - 13:35night before you can't process all that information in one night.
-
13:35 - 13:36It makes it really hard.
-
13:36 - 13:40Uh...study to where you understand, not just to memorize
-
13:40 - 13:44a fact. If you understand why something is, the way it is,
-
13:44 - 13:47then you'll understand the concept a lot easier.
-
13:47 - 13:52I would suggest to be self-motivated. That's very important.
-
13:52 - 13:55I'd just like to share another tip. For me, what has really made me
-
13:55 - 13:59make things work good for me to be a success in college is
-
13:59 - 14:04to have the right attitude. And you know, don't be afraid! Don't be afraid to step
-
14:04 - 14:05out there and give it all you've got!
-
14:05 - 14:08There's help here that's provided for you. You just have to
-
14:08 - 14:12ask for it. And uh, people are willing to help you.
-
14:12 - 14:18Umm...I spent the last two years learning all over again
-
14:18 - 14:19and it's been a great experience!
-
