How is JK Rowling Transphobic? Trans Guy Responds

  • 0:00 - 0:03
Do you have snacks? Do you have
    water, and are you sitting
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    comfortably? Because this will be
    a long one.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Hey spuds, it's Jamie. Welcome
    back to another video,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
first time on my channel? I don't
    know, but welcome either way.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
And today we are breaking down
    JK Rowling's transphobia.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
We are looking back at a timeline
    of the transphobia
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    shared by JK Rowling.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    Are you ready?
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    We're doing a non-exhaustive, but
    still pretty detailed look
  • 0:22 - 0:25
back over the years of JK Rowling's
    transphobia,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
and how it turned from an
    "accidental" like of a tweet
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    into full-blown transphobia and
    denying that
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    trans women are women and
    going even further
  • 0:33 - 0:35
than that as well, all in the space
    of around six years.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
So why am I doing this video?
    Partly because there are
  • 0:38 - 0:41
still a lot of people who don't
    believe that JK Rowling
  • 0:41 - 0:45
is transphobic and still deny that
    she has said anything anti-trans,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    even now with everything that's
happened, and that is a problem.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
So, as with other longer video
    essays that I have done
  • 0:51 - 0:53
in the past, I wanted to give you
    the tools to,
  • 0:53 - 0:56
one, decide for yourself, and two,
    have evidence points
  • 0:56 - 0:59
that you are able to express to
    people who may not understand.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
Some of the common messages I
    get are asking,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
"How do I help the people in my
    social circle understand
  • 1:04 - 1:07
that people like JK Rowling are
    contributing towards transphobia
  • 1:07 - 1:10
and that this rhetoric isn't a useful
    or feminist stance,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    but primarily a transphobic and
    discriminatory stance?"
  • 1:14 - 1:16
So hopefully this video can help
    with that.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    I think the trajectory and
    development of Rowling's
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    transphobia is also something that
    we've seen more generally
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    among anti-trans views and
    people with anti-trans
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    views over recent years.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    Rowling is a very prominent
    example of this.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
It's where people start off very
    tentative, testing
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    the waters on their opinions,
    keeping them mostly private,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
or they're unsure of their opinions
    themselves to begin with,
  • 1:36 - 1:40
and then eventually over time this
    spirals into outright transphobia
  • 1:40 - 1:42
as their confidence in their views
    grow and their echo
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    chambers strengthen.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
Firstly, I want to point out that
    transphobia and discrimination
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    towards trans people causes
    genuine harm.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    This is something we already
    know,
  • 1:51 - 1:52
and there's a lot of evidence to
    back this up.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    And there are multiple instances
    of JK Rowling's transphobia
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    being linked to causing harm.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
    One is the International LGBT+
    review, saying that
  • 2:00 - 2:02
the UK faces serious damage from
    JK Rowling
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    and other transphobic rhetoric.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    Another is the Women's Media
Center, who have outright said that
  • 2:32 - 2:35
Also mentioning the fact that a
    Republican senator
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    shut down legislation that would
    have protected the LGBT+
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    community in Oklahoma and cited
    Rowling's essay
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    in defense of his position.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
And these are just a couple of
    examples.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
And what this goes to show is that
    people with huge platforms,
  • 3:15 - 3:17
whether they have an intention to
    cause harm or not
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    to a specific community,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
the impact of their words can still
    have a huge
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    and negative effect on large
    groups of people.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
This topic is also important to
    explore because JK Rowling
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    has effectively become the postal
    woman for
  • 3:28 - 3:30
TERFs and transphobes in the UK.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
So even if people are refusing to
    believe that
  • 3:32 - 3:37
    she's transphobic herself, she's
being used by very transphobic people
  • 3:37 - 3:40
as a source of confidence to share
    their own hateful views.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    Prominent TERFs show public and
    active support and/or adoration
  • 3:44 - 3:46
for JK Rowling. And at anti-trans
    gatherings
  • 3:46 - 3:48
you are highly likely to see some
    form of
  • 3:48 - 3:52
'I love JK Rowling' merch such as
    t-shirts, banners and stickers.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
What I really question is how a
    cisgender woman
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    has become the listened-to voice
    and the go-to voice
  • 3:59 - 4:02
for quite a lot of people when it
    comes to trans issues.
  • 4:02 - 4:05
Even if you ignore that what she
relies upon to justify her position
  • 4:05 - 4:10
    are half-truths, dog whistles,
    subpar "scientific" findings,
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    and her statements are often
    shown to ignore
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    the actual truth of situations,
    actual evidence, science, facts
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    and numerous real-life accounts
    from the trans community.
  • 4:19 - 4:22
A bigger issue than JK Rowling
    herself is the fact that
  • 4:22 - 4:25
some people in society view her
as an authority on a topic
  • 4:26 - 4:28
that she isn't qualified to talk
    about
  • 4:28 - 4:29
in the way she talks about it.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    How did a cisgender fantasy
    children's book author
  • 4:32 - 4:35
become a go-to source for TERF
    groups and
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    other people on trans people?
  • 4:37 - 4:39
And what we're seeing now is
    other people,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
also unqualified and with no lived
    experience
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    of being trans themselves,
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    being given televised platforms to
    "debate" trans rights
  • 4:47 - 4:49
when it shouldn't even be a
    debate in the first place.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    JK Rowling's anti-trans
    "arguments" all seem to
  • 4:51 - 4:55
boil down to a belief that trans
women as a group of people
  • 4:55 - 4:57
are dangerous and pose a risk to
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    cis women's safety in public
    spaces.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    Something that there is no
    evidence for.
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    Other sources have said:
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    Trans women have been happily
    using women's spaces for decades,
  • 5:34 - 5:37
a very long time, and no one has
    even noticed or cared
  • 5:37 - 5:40
to the extent that they are
    noticing or caring now,
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    because at the moment trans
    people feel like
  • 5:42 - 5:44
the popular group to pick on.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
So with the intro out the way, let's
    get into the actual timeline
  • 5:46 - 5:49
and the details of JK Rowling's
    transphobia over the years,
  • 5:49 - 5:51
and it kicks off in 2017.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
Going back to 2017, we have
    Rowling "liking" a tweet
  • 5:54 - 5:57
that linked back to a now deleted
    article
  • 5:57 - 6:01
that was being, let's just say, not
    very nice about trans women.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
This is when some people began
    to initially question
  • 6:03 - 6:06
    JK Rowling's stance on trans
    people.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
    Fast-forwarding to the following
    year, we have another
  • 6:08 - 6:12
"like" incident on Twitter, but then
    this was unliked soon after.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
This tweet referred to men in
    dresses
  • 6:14 - 6:16
it's believed in reference to trans
    women.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    This time, a spokesperson for
    Rowling said that this was
  • 6:18 - 6:21
an accidental like caused by a
    "middle-aged moment".
  • 6:21 - 6:25
This was the first time I personally
    started noticing things bubbling
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    around Rowling's potential
    opinions about
  • 6:27 - 6:31
the trans community, and it raised
a lot of questions at this point.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
And I'm not sure how many people
    bought into
  • 6:34 - 6:35
    the "middle-aged moment" thing.
  • 6:35 - 6:36
But I think we can safely say that
  • 6:36 - 6:40
at this point any anti-trans beliefs
and opinions that JK Rowling held
  • 6:40 - 6:44
was something that she was not
    really public or open about.
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    Personally, Harry Potter was
    something I enjoyed in childhood.
  • 6:46 - 6:50
It's also something that a lot of the
    LGBT+ community enjoyed
  • 6:50 - 6:52
and related to in many ways.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
Rowling is seen as such an
    influential figure
  • 6:54 - 6:56
because of the success of Harry
    Potter.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    So the concept of someone
    whose work was viewed
  • 6:58 - 7:01
as an escape and a source of
    comfort for many people,
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    including LGBT+ people, is now
    being so anti-inclusive
  • 7:05 - 7:07
when it comes to the trans
    community
  • 7:07 - 7:08
doesn't feel great to say the least
  • 7:08 - 7:11
and I think has left quite a few
    people feeling baffled.
  • 7:11 - 7:14
2019 saw the initial shift of JK
    Rowling
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    voicing her anti-trans
    opinions/support of
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    anti-trans views more openly.
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    She vocally supported someone
    who was called out
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    for sharing anti-trans views.
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    This person was suing the
    company that chose
  • 7:24 - 7:26
not to renew their contract, and
    there were hashtags
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    and support going around on
    Twitter
  • 7:28 - 7:30
at the time that JK Rowling took
    part in.
  • 7:30 - 7:32
It was a turning point because
    there was no excuse
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    of "accidentally" liking something
  • 7:34 - 7:36
    or having a "middle-aged
    moment".
  • 7:36 - 7:38
    This was obvious support of
    someone who tweeted things like:
  • 7:52 - 7:54
At this point there were a lot of
    questions
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    over Rowling's personal beliefs
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    and why she was supporting
    someone
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    with such openly transphobic
    ones.
  • 7:59 - 8:01
Rowling herself at this point then
    tweeted things like this:
  • 8:15 - 8:17
It's pretty difficult to keep on
    denying that JK Rowling
  • 8:17 - 8:20
    didn't have any anti-trans beliefs
    at this point,
  • 8:20 - 8:22
but this definitely still could have
    been put down
  • 8:22 - 8:25
    to a one-off incident, a
    misunderstanding of a situation,
  • 8:25 - 8:28
or support for an individual in that
    particular scenario.
  • 8:28 - 8:30
But then we move to 2020.
  • 8:30 - 8:34
2020 saw a big escalation in both
    her frequency of sharing
  • 8:34 - 8:37
and her obviousness of her views
    on people who are transgender.
  • 8:37 - 8:41
It all seemed to kick off in June
    2020, when she tweeted out
  • 8:41 - 8:44
a response to the use of the
    phrase "people who menstruate".
  • 8:51 - 8:53
This tweet was rightfully called out
because there's no need to mock
  • 8:53 - 8:56
or feel threatened by the use of
    gender-neutral language.
  • 8:56 - 9:00
    By its very nature, inclusive
    language does not exclude anyone
  • 9:00 - 9:02
and is used only on a top level
    when necessary.
  • 9:02 - 9:05
    Women who menstruate will still
    be referred to
  • 9:05 - 9:07
as women on an individual level,
  • 9:07 - 9:09
but neutral language like this in
    things like articles
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    and healthcare leaflets helps
    reduce dysphoria
  • 9:12 - 9:16
and make sure that trans men and
    AFAB non-binary people
  • 9:16 - 9:18
are aware that they are involved in
    those conversations,
  • 9:18 - 9:21
and also that women who don't
    menstruate don't feel forgotten about.
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    Because women's rights have
    been fought for years
  • 9:24 - 9:27
to ensure that women are seen as
    equals, as people,
  • 9:27 - 9:31
not just a means of reproduction,
and not just boil down to
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    their parts and reproductive
    organs.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
So why wouldn't people want to
    make sure that the language
  • 9:36 - 9:39
    we're using doesn't demean
    women or exclude others,
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    including many women who for
reasons such as medical issues or,
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    most commonly, age also don't
    menstruate?
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    When called out, Rowling
    somewhat
  • 9:45 - 9:46
    doubled down on her stance,
  • 9:46 - 9:49
    but sugar-coated it by including
    something about loving
  • 9:49 - 9:50
    and respecting trans people.
  • 10:05 - 10:07
An important thing to point out
here as well is that nobody's
  • 10:07 - 10:09
    denied that sex is real.
  • 10:34 - 10:35
There were a lot of mixed
    messages in there,
  • 10:35 - 10:38
and she also claimed that she
    respects trans people's
  • 10:38 - 10:40
    rights to live authentically
    and would march with us
  • 10:40 - 10:42
    if we were discriminated against.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
Looking back at this now and
    seeing
  • 10:44 - 10:48
how vocal she's since been and
where her views have escalated to,
  • 10:48 - 10:50
this feels very surreal to read.
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    Neither statement has transpired
    to be true
  • 10:52 - 10:54
based on how her views and her
    sharing of her views
  • 10:54 - 10:56
has evolved over the past few years.
  • 10:56 - 10:59
Also, even in 2020, that "if trans
    people were discriminated against
  • 10:59 - 11:01
and march with them" was not an
    "if",
  • 11:01 - 11:04
    it's constantly happening. It's a
    when next,
  • 11:04 - 11:06
    it's happening right now.
  • Not Synced
    And supporting transphobes and
    mocking the use of
  • Not Synced
    gender-neutral language and
    using straw-man
  • Not Synced
arguments such as 'I just think sex
    is real'
  • Not Synced
is not the way to go about
    marching with trans people
  • Not Synced
    who are being discriminated
    against
  • Not Synced
or showing that you love and
    respect them.
  • Not Synced
    Very shortly after these tweets
    happened,
  • Not Synced
Rowling shared an essay she wrote
    about it.
  • Not Synced
Sharing the article in a tweet that
    said "TERF wars".
  • Not Synced
    This essay was filled with
    half-truths, dog whistles,
  • Not Synced
    outright misinformation and just
    lacking justification
  • Not Synced
or evidence for the claims that
    she was making.
  • Not Synced
Plenty of people have broken this
    essay down,
  • Not Synced
    myself and my partner included,
  • Not Synced
I will leave a link to the video down
    in the description box.
  • Not Synced
We've heard it was important to
    address this essay
  • Not Synced
    and its Insidious transphobia, as
    many people were not aware
  • Not Synced
    of the inaccuracies and
    took it at face value.
  • Not Synced
This is where a lot of the
    comments about
  • Not Synced
    "oh, she's not really transphobic"
    come from.
  • Not Synced
    And honestly, for people who
    didn't really understand
  • Not Synced
trans issues, and if they weren't
    close to a trans person
  • Not Synced
who they could talk to, I could see
    how they might come away
  • Not Synced
    from reading JK Rowling's essay
    feeling confused and conflicted.
  • Not Synced
That's why we made a video to
    break it down further
  • Not Synced
    and show how these half-truths
    were packaged
  • Not Synced
    and the information was packaged
    in a way
  • Not Synced
that was harmful to the trans
    community.
  • Not Synced
This essay really marked a turning
    point,
  • Not Synced
    and alongside the tweet shared
    earlier,
  • Not Synced
they sparked the beginning of JK
    Rowling being seen
  • Not Synced
by trans people and trans allies as
    anti-trans,
  • Not Synced
but it's also the time that she
    started getting very passionate
  • Not Synced
support from TERFs and other transphobes.
  • Not Synced
Some of the allies who spoke out
    against her views
  • Not Synced
    included some very prominent
stars from the Harry Potter series,
  • Not Synced
    with Daniel Radcliffe saying:
  • Not Synced
    Emma Watson has also
    commented on the situation
  • Not Synced
    and voiced her trans support.
  • Not Synced
Rupert Grint has also spoken out,
  • Not Synced
stating he stands firmly with the
    trans community.
  • Not Synced
    Eddie Redmayne said:
  • Not Synced
    And Bonnie Wright said:
  • Not Synced
All of them spoke out shortly after
    the essay
  • Not Synced
    was posted by JK Rowling.
  • Not Synced
    They have received backlash for
    their pro-trans stance,
  • Not Synced
    even being accused of betraying
    JK Rowling,
  • Not Synced
but it was so important for them
    to speak up,
  • Not Synced
and I'm personally grateful for it,
as are many other trans people.
  • Not Synced
    Rowling has managed to garner
    such passionate support
  • Not Synced
and, albeit much smaller than the
    support
  • Not Synced
    that the trans community has.
  • Not Synced
Her words still carry such weight
    and power,
  • Not Synced
and transphobes are so loud, it's
    sometimes difficult to remember
  • Not Synced
that they are not the majority
    viewpoint.
  • Not Synced
But just because they're not a
    majority view
  • Not Synced
    doesn't mean that they're not
    causing harm,
  • Not Synced
and it doesn't mean that they're
    not being used
  • Not Synced
as pawns in wider media and
    political campaigns.
  • Not Synced
But still, to see the main cast
    speak out like that
  • Not Synced
    so quickly after Rowling's essay
was uplifting as a trans person
  • Not Synced
at a time that felt very unnerving
    to be trans.
  • Not Synced
We're still not done for 2020,
    though -
  • Not Synced
this all happened in June, and
    Rowling
  • Not Synced
was not done with Pride Month
    just yet.
  • Not Synced
JK Rowling tweeted a thank you to
    fellow author
  • Not Synced
    Stephen King after he retweeted
    one of her tweets.
  • Not Synced
    Someone then asked Stephen King
    what his retweet
  • Not Synced
of Rowling's tweet meant for his
    opinions on the trans community,
  • Not Synced
    to which Stephen King replied:
  • Not Synced
    Rowling then deleted her thank
    you tweet to King.
  • Not Synced
    Jumping ahead slightly to
    conclude this element,
  • Not Synced
almost a year after this happened,
    King spoke about the incident.
  • Not Synced
    Apparently, Rowling, also blocked
    him after his trans supportive
  • Not Synced
tweet, and he further stated that
    he felt that
  • Not Synced
her belief about trans women was
    wrong.
  • Not Synced
    Alongside the pro-trans stances,
    this time showed
  • Not Synced
    an interesting shift and evidence
    for the increases
  • Not Synced
    in Rowling's transphobia over the
    years
  • Not Synced
    and, more importantly, an
    unwillingness to see or hear
  • Not Synced
views that were different from her
    own,
  • Not Synced
in that she seemed to block
    and/or ignore
  • Not Synced
anyone who was calling her out or
    saying
  • Not Synced
    that she was causing harm.
  • Not Synced
What this achieves is an echo
    chamber where people believe
  • Not Synced
    that their opinion are more
    supported than they actually are,
  • Not Synced
and thus this will strengthen one's
    resolve
  • Not Synced
to stick with their opinions and
    even increase
  • Not Synced
    their beliefs and willingness to
    share those opinions.
  • Not Synced
2020 is still not done. As the very
    next month in July,
  • Not Synced
she posted a very long Twitter
    thread after being called out
  • Not Synced
for liking a tweet that compared
  • Not Synced
    hormone therapy to
    antidepressants.
  • Not Synced
Just adding to that as well, the
    assumption that
  • Not Synced
    healthcare providers are always
    really happy and provide
  • Not Synced
    hormone replacement therapy
    really easily to
  • Not Synced
trans people, when that's not the case.
  • Not Synced
    Her thread made medical claims
    about hormones
  • Not Synced
and liken the access to medical
    transition
  • Not Synced
as a kind of conversion therapy for
    young gay people.
  • Not Synced
    The point about conversion
    therapy, in particular
  • Not Synced
in reference to young gay people,
    is a very dangerous
  • Not Synced
    and horrible viewpoint to share.
  • Not Synced
It is based on several assumptions
    that are wrong.
  • Not Synced
These are that, one, a majority of
    trans people identify as straight.
  • Not Synced
    Post-transition, they do not.
  • Not Synced
Two, that being gay is more
    difficult or more
  • Not Synced
    discriminated against than being
    trans, so people, therefore,
  • Not Synced
    transition to escape homophobia.
  • Not Synced
    Both transphobia and
    homophobia exist, are prevalent,
  • Not Synced
and no one would choose to face
    either.
  • Not Synced
And three, the people going to
    healthcare professionals
  • Not Synced
    for support with their gender
    identity are then being forced,
  • Not Synced
    persuaded, manipulated or
    pushed in some way
  • Not Synced
to transition when it's not the right
    thing for them to do.
  • Not Synced
This is not happening and the low
    regret rates evidence this.
  • Not Synced
To liken trans healthcare in any
    way to conversion therapy
  • Not Synced
is abhorent and shows a complete
    lack of awareness
  • Not Synced
to the weight those words can
carry and the harm they can do,
  • Not Synced
as well as a lack of understanding
    about the trans community
  • Not Synced
and trans healthcare as a whole.
  • Not Synced
If transphobia was a rabbit hole, at
    this point
  • Not Synced
JK Rowling was head first in the
    hole up to her ankles,
  • Not Synced
    and was deliberately or
    accidentally building a very loyal
  • Not Synced
fan base who believed and trusted
    her every word.
  • Not Synced
    It's completely irresponsible in my
    opinion to tweet so confidently
  • Not Synced
and so frequently and with such
    authority
  • Not Synced
    about a marginalised community
that you are, A) not a part of,
  • Not Synced
and B) you are lying about and
    spreading misinformation about,
  • Not Synced
    and also going directly against
    what the community
  • Not Synced
is telling you is the truth.
  • Not Synced
And even more problematic is that
  • Not Synced
    people are trusting what she's
    saying
  • Not Synced
because she's rich, white, cis and
    has a following,
  • Not Synced
which makes what she says all the
    more harmful.
  • Not Synced
Why are we not listening to the
    scientific and
  • Not Synced
    medical professionals who know
    the evidence and the facts
  • Not Synced
    about the trans community?
  • Not Synced
So many trans people have called
    and totally
  • Not Synced
    debunked Rowling's viewpoints
  • Not Synced
and the evidence that she tries to
use to back up her views
  • Not Synced
and still she carries on and still
    other people carry on
  • Not Synced
listening to and trusting her voice
    above the trans communitiy's.
