George Takei: "We've got to be actively involved in the electoral process."

  • 0:00 - 0:05
There’s a memory seared into my brain when I was 5 years old.
  • 0:05 - 0:11
It was the spring of 1942 when soldiers came marching up our driveway,
  • 0:11 - 0:14
stomped up the front porch and banged on the door
  • 0:14 - 0:18
and ordered my family out of our home.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
We were imprisoned behind barbed wired fences
  • 0:22 - 0:25
for four years, for the duration of the war.
  • 0:25 - 0:30
Simply because we happened to look like the people that bombed Pearl Harbor.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    We were American Citizens.
  • 0:32 - 0:37
Yet, because of who we were, what we looked like,
  • 0:37 - 0:41
we were in prison without due process.
  • 0:42 - 0:50
It’s been 7 decades now we have made undreamed of advances.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
President Obama has had 3 Asian Americans on the Cabinet:
  • 0:54 - 0:59
Steven Chu, General Eric Shinseki and Gary Locke.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
We now have legislators in the US Congress.
  • 1:02 - 1:09
But we have, as an Asian American Community, low voter registration.
  • 1:09 - 1:13
We've got to be actively involved in the electoral process.
  • 1:13 - 1:19
And if you really appreciate the price that has been paid for that right,
  • 1:19 - 1:23
you should be in there participating, protecting our interests
  • 1:23 - 1:28
and in so doing making our democracy a truer democracy.
  • 1:28 - 1:33
We have a unique opportunity to support a president who is a part of us.
  • 1:33 - 1:39
He grew up in Hawaii, the ‘Aloha’ spirit, his sister’s half-Asian,
  • 1:39 - 1:43
he understands, and loves, the Asian-American community.
  • 1:43 - 1:49
President Obama’s record of helping to advance opportunities for Asian Americans
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    has been remarkable.
  • 1:51 - 1:57
We support President Obama for re-election because of that fantastic record.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
I can’t urge you strongly enough to register to vote,
  • 2:02 - 2:06
to raise funds, to volunteer your time and energy.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
Talk to your friends, talk to your relatives:
  • 2:09 - 2:11
it’s very important for all of us.
