Save as DAISY Add-in Tutorial Part 3: Using a DAISY Reader
-
0:01 - 0:09Welcome to the third Save As DAISY tutorial for Microsoft Word 2010. In previous tutorials
-
0:09 - 0:15I’ve explored how to download and install the Save As DAISY Add In and how to use the
-
0:15 - 0:21Add In to create a digital talking book in Word 2010.
-
0:21 - 0:29In this tutorial I will demonstrate how the files can be read back using a DAISY reader.
-
0:29 - 0:35A great deal has changed in the past couple of years. In the past DAISY Readers tended
-
0:35 - 0:45rely on digital books in CD format which required a hardware device such as the Plextalk player
-
0:45 - 0:50and reader. And while these are still available a great
-
0:50 - 0:57deal has changed, in particular the size and range of devices that can now play and read
-
0:57 - 1:05aloud the DAISY format. As you can see from this slide DAISY digital readers are now available
-
1:05 - 1:21on a desktop computer, a CD device, hand held devices, mobile phones and even on the Internet.
-
1:21 - 1:35A visit to the DAISY Consortium website also reflects the diverse nature of devices available
-
1:35 - 1:42to play DAISY content. But for the purpose of this tutorial I’m
-
1:42 - 1:50going to look at AMIS, a free to download DAISY Reader which runs on a computer. AMIS
-
1:50 - 1:57is a software program that you can use to read DAISY books. It is self-voicing, meaning
-
1:57 - 2:02that no specialised screen-reading software is needed in order for it to be used by visually
-
2:02 - 2:10impaired people. So here is AMIS and I’m going to go to the
-
2:10 - 2:17Help file and Contents and open the default DAISY Book so you can see some of the basic
-
2:17 - 2:28features. On the left hand side you can the heading structures, so important to allow
-
2:28 - 2:34navigation, and there are also options to change the speed of the reading voice as well
-
2:34 - 2:44as colour options, magnification and even bookmarks to revisit favourite or important
-
2:44 - 2:50parts of the book or even to start reading where you finished last.
-
2:50 - 2:57Note too that in the menus everything can be controlled via the keyboard, this is particularly
-
2:57 - 3:02important for those users who only use the keyboard to access and navigate content on
-
3:02 - 3:08a computer. Okay, so I’m going to open the DAISY Book
-
3:08 - 3:15that I created in the last tutorial. In the File menu there are options to open the DAISY
-
3:15 - 3:22Book from a CD and even from the Internet so there is a great deal of flexibility on
-
3:22 - 3:30how you can store and access a DAISY Book. Now in the last tutorial I saved the talking
-
3:30 - 3:38book to the desktop. So by going to File and Open and navigating to the desktop I can see
-
3:38 - 3:48the folder My Talking Books. Inside the folder there are two other folders.
-
3:48 - 3:55Both are DAISY compatible, the DAISY 202 folder is for those users who have or prefer to use
-
3:55 - 4:06older DAISY reading devices which use the ‘ncc’ format while the z3986 is a more
-
4:06 - 4:15recent format of DAISY, that is the opf and ncx –these are the files are used to open
-
4:15 - 4:24a DAISY book. Fortunately AMIS will read both formats.
-
4:24 - 4:47So now AMIS is reading the conversion form earlier. Now I’m not sure if you can hear
-
4:47 - 4:53the voice that is reading just now, but I’m using a Scottish computer voice called Heather.
-
4:53 - 5:00This is because I’ve my default voice as Heather. When you use the Save As DAISY Add
-
5:00 - 5:09In for Word, the default voice on your computer system is used to generate the audio files.
-
5:09 - 5:14In the next tutorial I’ll show you how to change and set the default voice on your computer
-
5:14 - 5:16system.
-
5:16 -Thank you for watching.
