The Huffington Post's Sexist Linkbait Strategy
-
0:03 - 0:08The mainstream media is so full of right wing and
-
0:08 - 0:13centrist news coverage that many of us who
-
0:13 - 0:15desire social change take to the internet to find
-
0:15 - 0:16out what's happening in the world
-
0:16 - 0:19The Huffington Post a so called progressive
-
0:19 - 0:20liberal newsblogs that you may have heard of
-
0:20 - 0:23was founded in 2005 by Arianna Huffington
-
0:23 - 0:26she wanted to create a liberal counterpoint to
-
0:26 - 0:28right wing sites such as the Drudge Report
-
0:28 - 0:30I'm all for liberal and progressive news blogs but
-
0:30 - 0:31the problem with HuffPo is they are continually
-
0:31 - 0:33throwing women under the bus
-
0:33 - 0:36the website is dripping with sexism
-
0:36 - 0:38Progressive politics includes issues around
-
0:38 - 0:42racism and sexism, class, disability and
-
0:42 - 0:44sexuality. According to Alexa.com the Huffington
-
0:44 - 0:48Post is the 36th most viewed site in the US
-
0:48 - 0:50It beats out the Wall Street Journal and the LA
-
0:50 - 0:53Times. In order to entice viewers they use a tactic
-
0:53 - 0:55called Link baiting. It's any content within a
-
0:55 - 0:58website design specifically to gain attention.
-
0:58 - 1:00Linkbaiting is an internet marketing strategy that
-
1:00 - 1:01relies on sensationalism to
-
1:02 - 1:03bring in viewers which then
-
1:03 - 1:06generates more ad revenue. In this case they
-
1:06 - 1:08regularly show women's nipples, cleavage and
-
1:08 - 1:10asses in order to entice views, and they even
-
1:10 - 1:12have a section called Celebrity Skin because
-
1:12 - 1:14apparently they aren't shy at all about their
-
1:14 - 1:16objectification. And let's be clear now
-
1:16 - 1:18objectification isn't just showing women's bodies
-
1:18 - 1:20it's using women's bodies to sell something
-
1:20 - 1:23so in this case they're selling "real" news stories
-
1:23 - 1:25but they are bringing people in by talking about
-
1:25 - 1:28celebrity nipples and which female politician is
-
1:28 - 1:31hotter. They often have images of half naked
-
1:31 - 1:34women right next to the "legitimate" news stories
-
1:35 - 1:36Or they will feature a popular news story like the
-
1:36 - 1:39one about the proposed mosque in New York City
-
1:39 - 1:42but they will use a nearly full screen image of a
-
1:42 - 1:44woman's body stratling a stripper pole
-
1:44 - 1:46This is fundamentally an issue about racism in
-
1:46 - 1:47America yet they're using a woman's body to
-
1:47 - 1:50gain attention. Since it's a powerful image to use
-
1:50 - 1:53as linkbait, they used it repeatedly on the site
-
1:53 - 1:57over and over and over and over again
-
1:57 - 1:59This would of course bother me in general
-
1:59 - 2:01but I'm specifically pissed off at this site because
-
2:01 - 2:03they claim to be liberal and progressive
-
2:03 - 2:04when they are clearly not when it comes to
-
2:04 - 2:07women. They have categories like Obama, Sarah
-
2:07 - 2:10Palin, economy, housing, Glenn Beck, the war
-
2:10 - 2:12And then they have an Entertainment section
-
2:12 - 2:15with categories like celebrity skin, sex tapes
-
2:15 - 2:18Lindsay Lohan, Jersey Shore, and these are all
-
2:18 - 2:20readily and easily available, they show up
-
2:20 - 2:23regularly on the home page yet I have to dig
-
2:23 - 2:26in order to find Women's Rights tucked away
-
2:26 - 2:28in the World section, which hardly ever shows up
-
2:28 - 2:30on the front page. Apparently women's rights
-
2:30 - 2:33don't rise to the level of importance as naked
-
2:33 - 2:35celebrities.
-
2:36 - 2:38This is even more apparently on their
-
2:38 - 2:40Activism section which is also tucked away and
-
2:40 - 2:42hard to find because the first three featured
-
2:42 - 2:45articles are of half naked women, you can thank
-
2:45 - 2:47PETA for that one. Because of this it's not
-
2:47 - 2:49surprising that women bloggers on the site are
-
2:49 - 2:52also treated with a similar disrespect. Although
-
2:52 - 2:54there are female and feminist bloggers on
-
2:54 - 2:56Huffington Post they rarely get featured as
-
2:56 - 2:59news items. So if it doesn't make it to the front
-
2:59 - 3:00page or the front page of their respective
-
3:00 - 3:03sections it's going to get very few views because
-
3:03 - 3:05there is so much content filtering through HuffPo
-
3:05 - 3:07everyday. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting
-
3:07 - 3:10did a study that found that only 23% of featured
-
3:10 - 3:11content was written by women.
-
3:11 - 3:13I know what you are thinking, it was founded by
-
3:13 - 3:16a woman, a powerful woman and yes but Sarah
-
3:16 - 3:19Palin is also a powerful woman and look at how
-
3:19 - 3:21disgraceful she is when it comes to women's
-
3:21 - 3:24rights. Just because it's female fronted doesn't
-
3:24 - 3:26change the fact that it's structurally and
-
3:26 - 3:29institutionally excluding women from the
-
3:29 - 3:31intellectual sphere and most often only featuring
-
3:31 - 3:35women as linkbait. The popularity of this site
-
3:35 - 3:37serves to define progressive politics and they're
-
3:37 - 3:39saying that woman aren't really included in any
-
3:39 - 3:42substantial capacity. Too often websites like the
-
3:42 - 3:44Huffington Post gets to claim a progressive slant
-
3:44 - 3:46while treating women in ways that liberals would
-
3:46 - 3:49be pretty pissed off about if they saw it on Fox
-
3:49 - 3:51News. Any progressive news site worth following
-
3:51 - 3:54clearly and transparently includes race, gender,
-
3:54 - 3:57sexuality, class and ability throughout the entire
-
3:57 - 3:59site, not just when it's convenient for their
-
3:59 - 4:00marketing strategy.
