The Huffington Post's Sexist Linkbait Strategy

  • 0:03 - 0:08
The mainstream media is so full of right wing and
  • 0:08 - 0:13
centrist news coverage that many of us who
  • 0:13 - 0:15
desire social change take to the internet to find
  • 0:15 - 0:16
out what's happening in the world
  • 0:16 - 0:19
The Huffington Post a so called progressive
  • 0:19 - 0:20
liberal newsblogs that you may have heard of
  • 0:20 - 0:23
was founded in 2005 by Arianna Huffington
  • 0:23 - 0:26
she wanted to create a liberal counterpoint to
  • 0:26 - 0:28
right wing sites such as the Drudge Report
  • 0:28 - 0:30
I'm all for liberal and progressive news blogs but
  • 0:30 - 0:31
the problem with HuffPo is they are continually
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    throwing women under the bus
  • 0:33 - 0:36
the website is dripping with sexism
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    Progressive politics includes issues around
  • 0:38 - 0:42
racism and sexism, class, disability and
  • 0:42 - 0:44
sexuality. According to Alexa.com the Huffington
  • 0:44 - 0:48
Post is the 36th most viewed site in the US
  • 0:48 - 0:50
It beats out the Wall Street Journal and the LA
  • 0:50 - 0:53
Times. In order to entice viewers they use a tactic
  • 0:53 - 0:55
called Link baiting. It's any content within a
  • 0:55 - 0:58
website design specifically to gain attention.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
Linkbaiting is an internet marketing strategy that
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    relies on sensationalism to
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    bring in viewers which then
  • 1:03 - 1:06
generates more ad revenue. In this case they
  • 1:06 - 1:08
regularly show women's nipples, cleavage and
  • 1:08 - 1:10
asses in order to entice views, and they even
  • 1:10 - 1:12
have a section called Celebrity Skin because
  • 1:12 - 1:14
apparently they aren't shy at all about their
  • 1:14 - 1:16
objectification. And let's be clear now
  • 1:16 - 1:18
objectification isn't just showing women's bodies
  • 1:18 - 1:20
it's using women's bodies to sell something
  • 1:20 - 1:23
so in this case they're selling "real" news stories
  • 1:23 - 1:25
but they are bringing people in by talking about
  • 1:25 - 1:28
celebrity nipples and which female politician is
  • 1:28 - 1:31
hotter. They often have images of half naked
  • 1:31 - 1:34
women right next to the "legitimate" news stories
  • 1:35 - 1:36
Or they will feature a popular news story like the
  • 1:36 - 1:39
one about the proposed mosque in New York City
  • 1:39 - 1:42
but they will use a nearly full screen image of a
  • 1:42 - 1:44
woman's body stratling a stripper pole
  • 1:44 - 1:46
This is fundamentally an issue about racism in
  • 1:46 - 1:47
America yet they're using a woman's body to
  • 1:47 - 1:50
gain attention. Since it's a powerful image to use
  • 1:50 - 1:53
as linkbait, they used it repeatedly on the site
  • 1:53 - 1:57
over and over and over and over again
  • 1:57 - 1:59
This would of course bother me in general
  • 1:59 - 2:01
but I'm specifically pissed off at this site because
  • 2:01 - 2:03
they claim to be liberal and progressive
  • 2:03 - 2:04
when they are clearly not when it comes to
  • 2:04 - 2:07
women. They have categories like Obama, Sarah
  • 2:07 - 2:10
Palin, economy, housing, Glenn Beck, the war
  • 2:10 - 2:12
And then they have an Entertainment section
  • 2:12 - 2:15
with categories like celebrity skin, sex tapes
  • 2:15 - 2:18
Lindsay Lohan, Jersey Shore, and these are all
  • 2:18 - 2:20
readily and easily available, they show up
  • 2:20 - 2:23
regularly on the home page yet I have to dig
  • 2:23 - 2:26
in order to find Women's Rights tucked away
  • 2:26 - 2:28
in the World section, which hardly ever shows up
  • 2:28 - 2:30
on the front page. Apparently women's rights
  • 2:30 - 2:33
don't rise to the level of importance as naked
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    celebrities.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
This is even more apparently on their
  • 2:38 - 2:40
Activism section which is also tucked away and
  • 2:40 - 2:42
hard to find because the first three featured
  • 2:42 - 2:45
articles are of half naked women, you can thank
  • 2:45 - 2:47
PETA for that one. Because of this it's not
  • 2:47 - 2:49
surprising that women bloggers on the site are
  • 2:49 - 2:52
also treated with a similar disrespect. Although
  • 2:52 - 2:54
there are female and feminist bloggers on
  • 2:54 - 2:56
Huffington Post they rarely get featured as
  • 2:56 - 2:59
news items. So if it doesn't make it to the front
  • 2:59 - 3:00
page or the front page of their respective
  • 3:00 - 3:03
sections it's going to get very few views because
  • 3:03 - 3:05
there is so much content filtering through HuffPo
  • 3:05 - 3:07
everyday. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting
  • 3:07 - 3:10
did a study that found that only 23% of featured
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    content was written by women.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
I know what you are thinking, it was founded by
  • 3:13 - 3:16
a woman, a powerful woman and yes but Sarah
  • 3:16 - 3:19
Palin is also a powerful woman and look at how
  • 3:19 - 3:21
disgraceful she is when it comes to women's
  • 3:21 - 3:24
rights. Just because it's female fronted doesn't
  • 3:24 - 3:26
change the fact that it's structurally and
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    institutionally excluding women from the
  • 3:29 - 3:31
intellectual sphere and most often only featuring
  • 3:31 - 3:35
women as linkbait. The popularity of this site
  • 3:35 - 3:37
serves to define progressive politics and they're
  • 3:37 - 3:39
saying that woman aren't really included in any
  • 3:39 - 3:42
substantial capacity. Too often websites like the
  • 3:42 - 3:44
Huffington Post gets to claim a progressive slant
  • 3:44 - 3:46
while treating women in ways that liberals would
  • 3:46 - 3:49
be pretty pissed off about if they saw it on Fox
  • 3:49 - 3:51
News. Any progressive news site worth following
  • 3:51 - 3:54
clearly and transparently includes race, gender,
  • 3:54 - 3:57
sexuality, class and ability throughout the entire
  • 3:57 - 3:59
site, not just when it's convenient for their
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    marketing strategy.
