NASA KSNN - Time Zones

  • 0:00 - 0:05
Hi I'm Jared, with more KSNN math news you can use.
  • 0:08 - 0:11
Did you know the Earth has 24 different time zones?
  • 0:11 - 0:16
I know the Earth's day is 24 hours long. Is that why we have 24 zones of time?
  • 0:16 - 0:22
Yes. The Earth is a sphere. It is divided into 360 degrees with longitude lines.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
I remember those lines are drawn north to south.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
The Earth turns 360 degrees in 24 hours.
  • 0:29 - 0:36
If you divide 360 degrees by 24 hours it means the Earth turns 15 degrees in one hour.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
So time zones are 15 degrees wide.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
And that's why we have 24 time zones.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
A long time ago cities set their time by the sun's location at noon.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
Two cities, a few degrees apart would still have a different time.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
Today these cities are in the same time zone.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
