0:03 - 0:06We help people in deprived or isolated communities
-
0:06 - 0:09around the country to find a voice online for their community,
-
0:09 - 0:11so that they can talk about what they are doing to the wider world
-
0:11 - 0:16and not be smothered by local political interests or local newspapers.
-
0:16 - 0:19We help people find a powerful find a powerful
-
0:19 - 0:22respected voice online. Now, we set up
-
0:22 - 0:24in Birmingham basically because of things like this
-
0:24 - 0:26Social Media Cafe. When I was going round the country a
-
0:26 - 0:28few years ago, raising money to try and start a business,
-
0:28 - 0:31it was coming to Birmingham and seeing this fantastic
-
0:31 - 0:35underground social media scene that goes on here in Birmingham,
-
0:35 - 0:37whether it's huge activity that goes on on flickr, or on facebook
-
0:37 - 0:43or in twitter, or in the amazing hyper local blogs here in Birmingham.
-
0:43 - 0:45And so that why we raised money here and decided to set up here.
-
0:45 - 0:49Birmingham Social Media Cafe Birmingham, you are in Wired,
-
0:49 - 0:50in the recent edition of Wired. I don't know if anyone has
-
0:50 - 0:54spotted that. It has a big league table of social media meet ups
-
0:54 - 0:57around the country and Birmingham is sitting in there slightly
-
0:57 - 1:00above the middle for the size of the SMC. I've been working
-
1:00 - 1:03in Birmingham for about 2 and half years, it's been a fantastic
-
1:03 - 1:06experience. I've worked with quite a few people here in the room.
-
1:06 - 1:08You are very lucky to have some excellent academic
-
1:08 - 1:11institutions here that are not just leading in the UK, but leading
-
1:11 - 1:14in the world in issues such as date and local journalism.,
-
1:14 - 1:16around BCU in particular. In fact Paul has brought some of
-
1:16 - 1:18his students and we have academics like Dave,
-
1:18 - 1:21not really an academic though Dave. Dave: "Blogger first"
-
1:21 - 1:25Yes, blogger first, academic second. And we always happy
-
1:25 - 1:31to talk to anyone as a business. Nicky Getgood is here. Karen who
-
1:31 - 1:33works with me. We have the remarkable Mike Rawlins. Give us
-
1:33 - 1:37a wave Mike. I know you want to. Michael, it turns out is an
-
1:37 - 1:40artists model! If you see his latest blog post, he's an artists model
-
1:40 - 1:43from his early work on the internet. You'd never know just looking at him.
-
1:43 - 1:45He was younger and more beautiful I think then.
-
1:45 - 1:48Mike: "Just think yourselves lucky it wasn't Lucian Freud"
-
1:48 - 1:50We are always happy to talk to anyone who wants to
-
1:50 - 1:52to get into the hyperlocal scene, who wants to find out about
-
1:52 - 1:56self publishing on the internet. We try and run as a public
-
1:56 - 1:58service business, which is that we raise money
-
1:58 - 2:00from big corporate clients and any surplus we make goes
-
2:00 - 2:03back into helping people in communities or just helping
-
2:03 - 2:05the scene as a whole. We are very interested over the next
-
2:05 - 2:08few months in working with people in Birmingham on
-
2:08 - 2:11new forms of local media ownership, very interested in seeing
-
2:11 - 2:13if we can create some sort of media co-operative here in
-
2:13 - 2:16Birmingham genuinely owned by the people, broadly based that
-
2:16 - 2:19has nothing whatever to do with traditional local television or
-
2:19 - 2:22the radio, but it comes from the web but is owned by the
-
2:22 - 2:25people that create the content. And that's about it really
-
2:25 - 2:27I'm around if you want to talk to me about anything at all.
-
2:27 - 2:28Or any of the team. And just get on and enjoy the coffee.
-
2:28 - 2:32And thank you to Karen by the way for organising this
-
2:32 -and persevering.
