We help people in deprived or isolated communities
  • 0:06 - 0:09
around the country to find a voice online for their community,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
so that they can talk about what they are doing to the wider world
  • 0:11 - 0:16
and not be smothered by local political interests or local newspapers.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
We help people find a powerful find a powerful
  • 0:19 - 0:22
respected voice online. Now, we set up
  • 0:22 - 0:24
in Birmingham basically because of things like this
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Social Media Cafe. When I was going round the country a
  • 0:26 - 0:28
few years ago, raising money to try and start a business,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
it was coming to Birmingham and seeing this fantastic
  • 0:31 - 0:35
underground social media scene that goes on here in Birmingham,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
whether it's huge activity that goes on on flickr, or on facebook
  • 0:37 - 0:43
or in twitter, or in the amazing hyper local blogs here in Birmingham.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
And so that why we raised money here and decided to set up here.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
Birmingham Social Media Cafe Birmingham, you are in Wired,
  • 0:49 - 0:50
in the recent edition of Wired. I don't know if anyone has
  • 0:50 - 0:54
spotted that. It has a big league table of social media meet ups
  • 0:54 - 0:57
around the country and Birmingham is sitting in there slightly
  • 0:57 - 1:00
above the middle for the size of the SMC. I've been working
  • 1:00 - 1:03
in Birmingham for about 2 and half years, it's been a fantastic
  • 1:03 - 1:06
experience. I've worked with quite a few people here in the room.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
You are very lucky to have some excellent academic
  • 1:08 - 1:11
institutions here that are not just leading in the UK, but leading
  • 1:11 - 1:14
in the world in issues such as date and local journalism.,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
around BCU in particular. In fact Paul has brought some of
  • 1:16 - 1:18
his students and we have academics like Dave,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
not really an academic though Dave. Dave: "Blogger first"
  • 1:21 - 1:25
Yes, blogger first, academic second. And we always happy
  • 1:25 - 1:31
to talk to anyone as a business. Nicky Getgood is here. Karen who
  • 1:31 - 1:33
works with me. We have the remarkable Mike Rawlins. Give us
  • 1:33 - 1:37
a wave Mike. I know you want to. Michael, it turns out is an
  • 1:37 - 1:40
artists model! If you see his latest blog post, he's an artists model
  • 1:40 - 1:43
from his early work on the internet. You'd never know just looking at him.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
He was younger and more beautiful I think then.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
Mike: "Just think yourselves lucky it wasn't Lucian Freud"
  • 1:48 - 1:50
We are always happy to talk to anyone who wants to
  • 1:50 - 1:52
to get into the hyperlocal scene, who wants to find out about
  • 1:52 - 1:56
self publishing on the internet. We try and run as a public
  • 1:56 - 1:58
service business, which is that we raise money
  • 1:58 - 2:00
from big corporate clients and any surplus we make goes
  • 2:00 - 2:03
back into helping people in communities or just helping
  • 2:03 - 2:05
the scene as a whole. We are very interested over the next
  • 2:05 - 2:08
few months in working with people in Birmingham on
  • 2:08 - 2:11
new forms of local media ownership, very interested in seeing
  • 2:11 - 2:13
if we can create some sort of media co-operative here in
  • 2:13 - 2:16
Birmingham genuinely owned by the people, broadly based that
  • 2:16 - 2:19
has nothing whatever to do with traditional local television or
  • 2:19 - 2:22
the radio, but it comes from the web but is owned by the
  • 2:22 - 2:25
people that create the content. And that's about it really
  • 2:25 - 2:27
I'm around if you want to talk to me about anything at all.
  • 2:27 - 2:28
Or any of the team. And just get on and enjoy the coffee.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
And thank you to Karen by the way for organising this
  • 2:32 -
    and persevering.
