WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 0:01 I've been teaching math the last 5 years 0:03 and this is why I flipped my classroom. 0:06 This is what my classroom used to look like. 0:13 I was teaching to the middle group of the class, 0:16 the students they could follow along with what we were doing 0:20 and we were going through the content. While I got higher level students 0:24 not challenged, bored with the information, 0:27 ready to move forward, I had a struggling group students 0:30 that were not receiving enough effective remediation. 0:33 They didn't have the basic content they needed to be working on the content 0:37 we are currently covering 0:38 or they needed more help in order to be successful. 0:42 This leads to a 90% use of class time being spent on 0:47 delivery and review of content. 90% of the time I was 0:51 at the front of the classroom 0:51 lecturing to a group of students and I wasn't meeting all their needs 0:55 10% class time was actually spent on application 0:59 which led to depending on students 1:02 to do the application needed to be successful and to go home or outside of 1:06 class and work on applying the concept 1:08 that I was giving out in class. This constant battle of 1:12 not reaching the needs of all students and feeling the need to differentiate 1:16 for all my learners 1:17 let the teacher, allows teachers to feel overwhelmed 1:20 and ineffective because we see the need for differentiation 1:23 but there's just not enough time for effective 1:27 differentiation. This called for drastic changes in how we teach. 1:35 This is where flipping the classroom comes in. Now the students outside of 1:39 class preload the content. 1:41 They get the information they're going to need for class. They can pause, 1:45 rewind, and rewatch the videos as many times they need to. 1:49 They can post questions online to their classmates or to the teacher. 1:53 And it's a self-paced program where they can be mediated by going back and 1:57 reviewing former topics 1:58 or they can work ahead when they've already mastered a concept 2:01 and are ready to look forward. They get the content here 2:05 before class so that when they come into class. My whole classroom 2:09 has shifted where I'm at the center of the class working between these 2:13 differentiated groups 2:14 focused on different pieces of application. I can now 2:19 work between each of these groups that are moving at their own pace. 2:22 This has created a 90% use of class time spent on 2:27 application of the content and 10% of class time 2:31 is spent on delivery of content when I can answer questions that have been 2:34 posted 2:35 or take any other questions that come up from applying 2:39 the content. Now in my classroom 2:46 all students are engaged and challenged. 2:50 I have time to work with each group giving 2:53 individualized time and instruction .2:56 And I can actually work between each group 3:01 to provide effective differentiation for all my varied groups of learners, 3:05 my struggling students, my middle group of learners 3:08 and I can now extend and expand on my higher level students' prior 3:14 knowledge and challenge them in 3:15 in the classroom.
