Text: We cannot eliminate disasters, but we can mitigate risk. We can reduce damage and we can save more lives. Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary General Actions: A tree on a hill in a thunderstorm; all the other trees have been felled. A man arrives with an ax on his shoulder. He chops the tree down. The tree falls. The man runs away to the other side of the hill. A landslide hurtles down from the top of the hill, catches the chopped tree, drowns a village in mud, reaches a stream. A woman watches from the other bank, is drowned in mud too. Parched, cracked earth. Three huts, a dead buffalo; further back, a woman in a pink dress. A man tries to pump water into a bucket, gets only a few drops. Another man, disconsolate, on his doorstep. A woman carries a bucket to a maize field where another man pours the last drops of water from a bucket on withered maize. A skinny she-buffalo - dead buffaloes - a woman walks, carrying a bucket. A school room: kids sitting, the teacher, standing, carries some books A crack appears in the wall behind her - kids point and scream. The teacher drops her books. School from outside - the "School" sign splits, then falls. People, panicked, run in the streets of the slum. Slum houses fall down. Lights go off in the big modern buildings behind the slum. A dust cloud hides everything. Text: since 2000 almost ONE MILLION killed more than TWO BILLION affected more than ONE TRILLION dollars lost TO DISASTERS but ONLY 1% of international aid money was spent to reduce the impact of disasters when just 10% would protect development gains & save THOUSANDS OF LIVES & BILLIONS OF DOLLARS Actions: A tree on a hill. A leaf falls. A man arrives, carrying an ax. He chops at the tree. There are other trees around. Further down, people are working on an anti-landslide wall. The tree falls - the man runs away from a thunderstorm, to the other side of the hill. A landslide is mainly blocked by the wall. Some rivulets of mud trickle into the village. A woman is carrying a basket full of vegetables. Parched, cracked earth. Three huts, further back, a woman in a pink dress. A man pumps water into a hose. In the village, bags labeled "Drought Resistant Seeds". The man on his doorstep looks happy. He's holding a glass of water. In the maize field, a man is working a watering system fed by the hose shown before. A woman sprays water on luscious maize plants. A healthy buffalo, a bag of drought resistant seeds. Other buffaloes, a teacher carries books. She enters a classroom. A crack appears on the wall behind her; children point at it. School entrance, from outside. The teacher comes out calmly and directs the children in the evacuation. View of the city: lots of dust from the earthquake but the school and most houses are still standing. The dust cloud hides everything. Text: EVERY 1 dollar spent on preparedness SAVES 7 dollars in response ACT NOW ACT NOW, SAVE LATER - UN OCHA - UNDP
