Rafeef Ziadah - 'Shades of Anger', London, 12.11.11
-
0:09 - 0:13I wrote this poem when we were doing a direct action
-
0:13 - 0:19at my university, there were Palestinian citizens and Israeli soldiers
-
0:19 - 0:22and I'm very petty about this thing so I said
-
0:22 - 0:26"I will only be a Palestinian, I refuse to be a settler or soldier."
-
0:26 - 0:28So, I was lying on the ground and this guy came
-
0:28 - 0:30and kicked me in the guts and said:
-
0:30 - 0:33"You deserve to be raped before you have your terrorist children."
-
0:33 - 0:36At the time I said nothing but then I wrote this poem.
-
0:36 - 0:39for this young gentleman.
-
0:46 - 0:48Allow me to speak my Arab tongue
-
0:48 - 0:51before they occupy my language as well.
-
0:55 - 0:58Allow me to speak my mother tongue
-
0:58 - 1:01before they colonise her memory as well.
-
1:01 - 1:03I am an Arab woman of color.
-
1:03 - 1:06and we come in all shades of anger.
-
1:06 - 1:11All my grandfather ever wanted to do
-
1:11 - 1:15was wake up at dawn and watch my grandmather kneel and pray
-
1:15 - 1:18in a village hidden between Jaffa and Haifa
-
1:18 - 1:21my mother was born under an olive tree
-
1:21 - 1:23on a soil they say is no longer mine
-
1:23 - 1:26but I will cross their barriers, their check points
-
1:26 - 1:30their damn apartheid walls and return to my homeland
-
1:30 - 1:36I am an Arab woman of colour and we come in all shades of anger.
-
1:36 - 1:38And did you hear my sister screaming yesterday
-
1:38 - 1:40as she gave birth at a check point
-
1:40 - 1:43with Israeli soldiers looking between her legs
-
1:43 - 1:45for their next demographic threat
-
1:45 - 1:47called her baby girl "Janeen".
-
1:47 - 1:49And did you hear Amni Mona screaming
-
1:49 - 1:52behind their prison bars as they teargassed her cell
-
1:52 - 1:54"We're returning to Palestine!"
-
1:54 - 1:59I am an Arab woman of colour and we come in all shades of anger.
-
1:59 - 2:02But you tell me, this womb inside me
-
2:02 - 2:05will only bring you your next terrorist
-
2:05 - 2:09beard wearing, gun waving, towelhead, sand nigger
-
2:09 - 2:12You tell me, I send my children out to die
-
2:12 - 2:16but those are your copters, your F16's in our sky
-
2:16 - 2:19And let's talk about this terrorism business for a second
-
2:19 - 2:23Wasn't it the CIA that killed Allende and Lumumba
-
2:23 - 2:25and who trained Osama in the first place
-
2:25 - 2:29My grandparents didn't run around like clowns
-
2:29 - 2:37with the white capes and the white hoods on their heads lynching black people
-
2:37 - 2:42I am an Arab woman of colour and we come in all shades of anger.
-
2:42 - 2:47"So who is that brown woman screaming in the demonstration?"
-
2:47 - 2:49Sorry, should I not scream?
-
2:49 - 2:52I forgot to be your every orientalist dream
-
2:52 - 2:58Jinnee in a bottle, belly dancer, harem girl, soft spoken Arab woman
-
2:59 - 3:00Yes master, no master.
-
3:00 - 3:02Thank you for the peanut butter sandwiches
-
3:02 - 3:05raining down on us from your F16's master
-
3:05 - 3:08Yes my liberators are here to kill my children
-
3:08 - 3:11and call them "collateral damage"
-
3:11 - 3:16I am an Arab woman of colour and we come in all shades of anger.
-
3:16 - 3:19So let me just tell you this womb inside me
-
3:19 - 3:22will only bring you your next rebel
-
3:22 - 3:27She will have a rock in one hand and a Palestinian flag in the other
-
3:27 - 3:30I am an Arab woman of color
-
3:30 - 3:36Beware! Beware my anger...
