  • 0:00 - 0:09
Let us welcome Tatyana Al Khouri to the station.
  • 0:09 - 0:15
Todays talk is about eye injuries in Bahrain by police forces.
  • 0:15 - 0:23
Yes Indeed. In a report published on the 29th October, Bahrain Human Rights Centre documented
  • 0:23 - 0:31
more than 50 direct injuries in the eye, either by rubber bullets, live rounds or flashbangs
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    or tear gas cannisters
  • 0:35 - 0:43
Abbas Hassan Ali is 1 of those injured. On the 13th March early morning, as he was heading to Pearl Roundabout
  • 0:43 - 0:51
he was hit with a rubber bullet directly into his eye, and today he is here with us to tell us about
  • 0:51 - 0:58
his injury and other similar injuries. We'll be listening to his testimony from Northern Governate in
  • 0:58 - 1:04
Bahrain. Please take caution, there may be disturbing images.
  • 1:04 - 1:13
Regarding my injury, i was heading to the rounadbout on March 13 early morning, and on our way there
  • 1:13 - 1:20
the security forces surprised us, by attacking us directly by rubber bullets and tear gas
  • 1:20 - 1:28
It was too chaotic , I decided to hide behind a tree to avoid any injuries . but a riot police directly
  • 1:28 - 1:36
targeted me by shooting me in my eye, and on impact I fell on the ground.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
I was carried by my other men and taken to Salmaniya Medical Centre. ( Men in background shouting for ambulance)
  • 1:41 - 1:46
I was shot more than once, but the shot that was aimed directly at me was the 1 in my eye.
  • 1:46 - 1:59
The men who tried carrying me away were also shot by the police forces, as you can see in the video, as theyre trying to carry me, empty handed, they got targetted as well.
  • 1:59 - 2:09
I was operated under thrice in the Salmaniya Medical Centre, during which the remains of my eyes were removed
  • 2:10 - 2:15
Regarding the eye injuries, mine wasnt the only case in that day. I can tell you , from what I know at
  • 2:15 - 2:27
least 4-5 got shot at their eye directly , with either bird-shot, or rubber bullets on the very same day.
  • 2:28 - 2:36
I'm 32 years old, and there is no hope of me seeing with my left eye again.
  • 2:36 - 2:44
I have a cosmetical eye in place now, nothing more. This is my injured eye, there are some external
  • 2:44 - 2:52
scars . As for the eye itself, it is movable. I can remove it and place it again as I wish.
  • 2:52 - 2:58
Its an artificial eye , i was implanted with in Jordan one month ago.
  • 2:58 - 3:05
Tatiana, human rights reports were published about the demonstrators fear of going to hospitals
  • 3:05 - 3:08
for treatment, did Abbas Hassan Ali face any troubles?
  • 3:08 - 3:15
What I know is that after his injury, he experienced beatings, got arrested, and was faced military court
  • 3:15 - 3:21
this is what drives many to seek treatments at homes or private clinics
  • 3:21 - 3:29
An 18 year old student, who we'll call Sayed Mousawi had his eye injured due to flashbang aimed at him
  • 3:29 - 3:35
He's with us to share his experiences about the difficulty he faced in getting proper treatment.
  • 3:35 - 3:39
Once again we warn you there might be disturbing images.
  • 3:39 - 3:51
I got injured on 6 October 2011 in what was a peaceful rally . Armed Mercenaries came and used excessive
  • 3:51 - 3:56
force on unarmed demonstrators, mostly aimed at the upper half of our bodies.
  • 3:56 - 4:05
The flashbang was aimed directly at my eye at a very close distance damaging my left eye.
  • 4:05 - 4:10
There is no hope of restoring vision to my left eye as it was gone, and has been removed since
  • 4:10 - 4:16
Everytime the armed forces appear, they aim directly at the demonstrators , instead of shooting in the
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    air to disperse the crowds.
  • 4:19 - 4:25
After the injury , the biggest problem is seeking treatment. Today in Bahrain, you cannot go to
  • 4:25 - 4:33
state hospitals as it will be your admission to prison and torture. Two hospitals refused to
  • 4:33 - 4:39
treat my wound, due to state instructions to refuse treatment to demonstrators.
  • 4:39 - 4:46
I was recieving treatment at first in houses , then eventually went to a private hospital to undergo
  • 4:46 - 4:55
an operation. After my treatment is complete in Bahrain, I will be heading to Jordan to be implanted w
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    with an artifical eye.
